Record snowfall buries Hokkaido, Japan
The most recent snow is the result of a strong cold front, which dropped temperatures as low as 10 degrees Fahrenheit (12 degrees below zero Celsius).

Flights were canceled, and many roads were closed on Tuesday in Hokkaido, Shikoku, and Kyushu. In some parts of the country, an especially snowy winter continues. Aomori City is reported to have spent the largest budget ever for snow removal. At ARAI Snow Resort in Niigata Prefecture, the snow depth was 17.26 feet (526 cm) on Jan. 31.

Heavy rains in Guinea capital Conakry cause multiple deaths and destroy homes
At least seven people have died in Conakry due to heavy overnight rain, exposing the city's vulnerability to extreme weather. The downpour, which struck overnight from Wednesday 30 July to Thursday 31 July, brought chaos to numerous neighbourhoods, collapsing homes and sweeping vehicles into the floodwaters. The government said seven people had died, though civil protection services suggest the death toll could be even higher, as several people are still missing. Several buildings collapsed during the downpour, trapping residents in floodwaters, local media and witnesses said. A resident of the Soumanbosiya neighbourhood, Benjamin Kamano, lost his three children and their mother when part of their home collapsed. 'I heard the children calling for help,' he told AFP reporters. 'I got up quickly and found myself underwater… There was no one in the children's room. I realised they were gone, because their crying had stopped.' The municipality of Matoto – Conakry's largest – also suffered heavily, with at least five reported deaths after two homes collapsed. Rescue operations underway after Nigeria flooding kills at least 150 Infrastructure, drainage systems overwhelmed The rainfall recorded in Conakry on Wednesday evening reached 70.8mm, according to national meteorological services. The effects have been compounded by longstanding urban planning issues, with unregulated construction and blocked drainage systems making many parts of the city vulnerable to severe flooding. Since the end of June, flooding in Guinea has resulted in at least 15 deaths and affected over 1,200 households. The director of the National Agency for Emergency and Humanitarian Disaster Management, Lancei Touré, acknowledged that poor infrastructure and overwhelmed drainage systems have exacerbated the crisis. In a statement issued Thursday, the government expressed 'deep sadness' over the loss of life and widespread damage. It pledged ongoing efforts to assist affected families and address the root causes of the city's vulnerability to extreme weather events. As the rainy season continues, many residents remain on high alert. There are growing calls for sustainable urban reforms to better protect Guinea's capital from future disasters. Tropical Storm Gil forms in the Pacific, expected to become hurricane: See tracker
Iona has weakened into a tropical storm in the Pacific Ocean while another storm – Tropical Storm Gil – has formed and continues to strengthen. In an advisory issued at 11 p.m. Hawaiian Standard Time on Wednesday, July 30, the National Hurricane Center said Gil has formed well to the south-southwest of the southern Baja California peninsula. The hurricane center said the storm was located about 785 miles away from the southern tip of the peninsula with maximum sustained winds near 45 mph with higher gusts, with a turn to the north-northwest expected over the next couple of days. "Some strengthening is forecast during the next couple of days, and Gil is forecast to become a hurricane on Friday," hurricane center forecasters said July 30. Iona, meanwhile, will continue on its westward path into Friday, followed by a gradual turn toward the north-northwest over the weekend, according to the NHC. Iona has maxiumum sustained winds near 50 mph with higher gusts, with additional weakning expected through Thursday. It does not illustrate the full width of the storm or its impacts, and the center of the storm is likely to travel outside the cone up to 33% of the time. It does not illustrate the full width of the storm or its impacts, and the center of the storm is likely to travel outside the cone up to 33% of the time. NHC tracking two other systems in the Pacific The hurricane center said in a July 30 advisory it is also keeping tabs on two other systems in the Pacific Ocean. The first system is a broad area of low pressure located about 800 miles southest of Hilo, Hawaii that is producing disorganized showers and thunderstorms. "Although the system lacks a well-defined low-level center at this time, some additional development is possible, and a short-lived tropical depression could still form during the next day or so," the hurricane center said in the advisory, noting that after that time, environmental conditions are expected to become less conducive for further development. The hurricane center gives the system a 40% chance of formation through the next 48 hours. A second area of low pressure is expected to form well south of southwestern Mexico in the next couple of days, hurricane center forecasters said. "Environmental conditions appear conducive for some gradual development of this system, and a tropical depression could form over the weekend or early next week" as the system moves west-northwestward, the hurricane center said, giving the system a 70% chance of formation through the next seven days. How do hurricanes form? Hurricanes are born in the tropics, above warm water. Clusters of thunderstorms can develop over the ocean when water temperatures exceed 80 degrees Fahrenheit. If conditions are right, the clusters swirl into a storm known as a tropical wave or tropical depression. A tropical depression becomes a named tropical storm once its sustained wind speeds reach 39 miles per hour. When its winds reach 74 mph, the storm officially becomes a hurricane. Prepare now for hurricanes Delaying potentially life-saving preparations could mean waiting until it's too late. "Get your disaster supplies while the shelves are still stocked, and get that insurance checkup early, as flood insurance requires a 30-day waiting period," NOAA recommends. Why Autumn Might Be the Best Time to Visit Albania
While most travelers flock to Albania during the summer months, those in the know are quietly booking their trips for autumn. There's something magical about this Balkan gem when the leaves start to turn and the crowds begin to thin. If you're still on the fence about when to visit, here's why autumn might just be Albania's best-kept seasonal secret. Summer in Albania can be intense, with temperatures soaring into the mid-30s Celsius along the coast. But autumn? That's when the country hits its sweet spot. October brings cool nights but warm days in many places, with average temperatures ranging from 14°C to 22°C. It's that perfect jacket weather where you can explore comfortably without breaking a sweat. September kicks off the season beautifully, offering temperatures similar to May, averaging 17°C. The oppressive summer heat has lifted, but the weather remains pleasant enough for all kinds of outdoor activities. Even in November, despite being cooler, it maintains average temperatures of 16°C during the day, making it surprisingly comfortable for sightseeing. Here's where autumn shows off. Many locals argue that autumn, from late September to October, is the best time to visit Northern Albania, and once you see the landscape transform, you'll understand why. The Albanian Alps become a canvas of gold, orange, and red as September and October are when autumn strikes the Alps and fall colours change. Hikers get the ultimate reward during this season. There are times when you'll be completely enveloped in vibrant yellow and orange foliage, creating photo opportunities that summer simply can't match. The contrast between the colorful forests and the dramatic mountain peaks is breathtaking. Let's be honest: nobody enjoys fighting for the perfect photo spot or waiting in long lines at popular attractions. Autumn solves this problem beautifully. November brings practically no other tourists, giving you the rare opportunity to experience Albania's attractions without the summer rush. This means you can enjoy the Albanian Riviera beaches in peace, explore Tirana's colorful neighborhoods without the crowds, and take your time at historical sites like Gjirokastër and Berat. The popular hiking trails in the Albanian Alps become your private playground, offering solitude that's impossible to find during peak season. Autumn travel isn't just about better weather and fewer crowds; it's also kinder to your wallet. November is typically the cheapest time to visit, making it perfect for budget-conscious travelers who still want to experience Albania's magic. Many accommodations offer lower rates as they prepare for the winter season, and restaurant terraces that charge premium prices in summer become much more affordable. You'll get better value for money across the board, from hotels to tours to dining experiences. If outdoor adventures are on your agenda, autumn delivers exceptional hiking conditions. The summer heat that can make mountain trails uncomfortable gives way to crisp, clear days perfect for exploring. The fog-shrouded landscape and first snow-dotted peaks create an almost mystical atmosphere that's particularly stunning in Northern Albania. The trails in the Albanian Alps, including popular routes around Theth and Valbona, become even more spectacular as the deciduous forests explode in autumn colors. Plus, the cooler temperatures mean you can hike longer distances without overheating. If you're interested in city attractions and cultural sites in ancient towns, November is a great time to visit. The UNESCO World Heritage sites of Berat and Gjirokastër are particularly enchanting in autumn, when you can wander their cobblestone streets and explore their historic buildings without jostling for space. Museums, galleries, and cultural sites operate on more relaxed schedules, and locals have more time to share stories and recommendations. It's the perfect season for those deeper cultural connections that make travel truly memorable. There's something undeniably cozy about Albania in autumn. After a day's walking in the mountains, a steaming bowl of bean and butternut broth will be a welcome sight. The season invites you to slow down, savor hearty Albanian cuisine, and enjoy longer conversations over dinner. The autumn atmosphere encourages exploration of Albania's excellent wine regions, where harvest season adds an extra layer of authenticity to tastings and vineyard visits. While some coastal resorts begin closing by late October, this shouldn't deter you. The country's cities, mountains, and cultural attractions remain fully accessible, and many would argue they're at their most beautiful during this season. Pack layers for varying temperatures, especially if you're planning to explore both coastal and mountainous regions. A light rain jacket is wise for November visits, but don't let the possibility of occasional showers deter you; they often create dramatic skies that make for incredible photography. Autumn in Albania offers the perfect balance of pleasant weather, stunning natural beauty, cultural richness, and practical advantages that make it arguably the country's best season for travelers. While others are already planning their summer getaways, consider bucking the trend and discovering Albania when it truly shines. TIME BUSINESS NEWS
