Deemed affordable housing, I-Santorini offers residents features typically seen in high-end properties.
A PENANG housing project inspired by the sun-washed blue domes of a Greek isle was awarded at FIABCI World Prix d'Excellence Awards 2025.
Ideal Property Group's (Ideal)I-Santorini development received gold in the Affordable Housing category.
Located in Tanjung Tokong, the project stood out for its blend of cost-efficient housing with premium lifestyle features.
Its clean white facades, cobalt blue accents, cabanas and Mediterranean-style landscaping mirror the famed island of Santorini, reinterpreted for Penang's urban setting.
The FIABCI World Prix d'Excellence is organised by the International Real Estate Federation and is regarded as one of the industry's leading honours.
Developers must first win at the national level before qualifying to compete globally.
Winners are selected by a panel of international experts, who assess design quality, functionality, sustainability, innovation and community impact.
In this context, I-Santorini's combination of aesthetics and affordability helped edge out other finalists from around the world.
While designed as affordable housing, the development offers residents features typically seen in high-end properties, including landscaped recreational zones and views of the Malacca Straits.
Accessibility was also a factor in its triumph.
Located near 14 local and international schools, the project is within easy reach of medical centres, parks, financial institutions and shopping hubs such as a marina mall and hypermarket.
The award comes a year after the group's Queens Residences Q2@Queens Waterfront clinched gold in the luxury residential category, marking back-to-back wins at the FIABCI international level.
Ideal currently has eight active developments, including office towers, industrial zones, seafront residences and more affordable housing units.
Three projects are scheduled for completion in the second half of this year. ― By LO TERN CHERN

Greek olive oil producers pivot from US amid Trump tariff threats

VARVASAINA: Greek olive oil producer Konstantinos Papadopoulos acted swiftly when U.S. President Donald Trump hinted at imposing tariffs on European goods earlier this year. His family-run business quickly secured a new buyer in Brazil, a market traditionally dominated by Portuguese olive oil. A shipment of 15,000 bottles is set to arrive in Itapoa soon, with another deal in Australia nearing completion. 'I think we learned a lesson from Trump not to rely with all our strength on one market... and to always have alternatives,' Papadopoulos said during a visit to his mill, where tanks brimmed with olive oil ready for export. The proposed 30% tariff on EU products has rattled industries from wine to automobiles, pushing producers like Papadopoulos to explore new markets preemptively. Greece, the fifth-largest olive oil exporter to the U.S., ships 8,000-10,000 tonnes annually. Other major European producers—Spain, Italy, and Portugal—face similar challenges. For Greece, olive oil is a cornerstone of agriculture, with ancient groves dotting its landscapes. The Papadopoulos family exported 350 tonnes to the U.S. in 2024, a third of their total output. This year, shipments have dropped to 100 tonnes, with a projected 40% decline if tariffs take effect. 'While we had built all our infrastructure based on a large scale on the American market, suddenly we see it disappearing,' Papadopoulos said. - REUTERS

Popular Ipoh food vendor defends RM35 Khao Mok chicken rice pricing following online criticism

A Malaysian man recently criticised a popular food vendor based in Ipoh, Perak, for allegedly charging exorbitant prices for a Thai-style chicken and rice dish. The vendor, Dania Sedek, previously went viral in 2023 for selling an omelette dish priced at RM13. Sharing his frustration on Threads, the man urged local businesses to stop 'normalising' inflated prices for what is essentially a simple dish. In a screenshot attached to the post, the Khao Mok-style chicken with rice, served with sauce and toppings, was priced at RM35 — labelled as the 'tour price'. 'Yes, you can say I'm not the target market. If one cannot afford it, then don't buy it,' he wrote. He also warned that other vendors may follow suit and increase their prices, encouraged by the support and hype such businesses receive. On TikTok, Dania received pushback over the pricing, with the comments echoing similar sentiments as the man. Dania has since responded to these comments in another TikTok post, justifying the expensive pricing by stating the use of good quality ingredients, hygienic food preparation and fair wages for her staff. She further explained that her establishment does not 'mark up' costs at a whim and only prices her food following the actual value she and her team have 'worked on'. 'We understand that not everyone will agree but we are confident that once customers taste the food themselves, looking at several aspects, InsyaAllah, they will understand why,' she concluded the TikTok video.
