What is the Oklahoma Sooners make-or-break game in 2025?

USA Today5 days ago
One game does not make or break a season. However, for the Oklahoma Sooners, overcoming some early tests will be pivotal in determining how much the Sooners improved, or didn't, from last year's 6-7 season. Though the Sooners were picked to finish 10th in the SEC preseason media poll, they have a chance to be one of the surprises in college football this season.
Writers at ESPN.com were tasked with picking one game for each of their preseason top-25 teams that could swing the season. For OU, that game comes early.
In Week 2, the Sooners could build some serious momentum when Michigan comes to town for a prime-time game. A win against the Wolverines would give the Sooners a real chance at a 5-0 start entering the Red River Showdown against Texas on Oct. 6. - Chris Low, ESPN
Oklahoma, ranked 25th in ESPN's preseason rankings, may have struggled last year, putting coach Brent Venables on the hot seat, but a 5-0 start is not unfamiliar. The Sooners began the 2023 season at 6-0 before stumbling midway through the year with one-score losses in back-to-back weeks against Kansas and Oklahoma State.
This year, OU opens the season with a favorable matchup against FCS' Illinois State before Michigan comes to town. A road game against Temple follows, then the Sooners' first SEC home game against Auburn. Oklahoma will then host Kent State before the Red River Showdown against what is likely to be a top-10 Texas team.
Opening the season 5-0 going into the Texas game is huge, considering the difficulty in the back half of the schedule. After the Texas game, the Sooners will go on the road to face South Carolina, Alabama, and Tennessee and will host Ole Miss, Missouri, and LSU. There's the possibility that all six of those games could be against a ranked opponent.
Getting off to a hot start, including a win over Michigan, is paramount to the Sooners' success in 2025.
Oklahoma is also considered the most important game for No. 19 Michigan and No. 3 Texas.

Ogunbowale, Bueckers score 20 apiece and Wings hang on to defeat Liberty 92-82

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Arike Ogunbowale had 20 points and 14 assists, Paige Bueckers scored 20 points and the Dallas Wings hung on to beat the New York Liberty 92-82 on Monday night despite making only one field goal in the fourth quarter. Dallas led 85-62 through three quarters but a 3-pointer from Aziaha James with about 7 minutes remaining was the Wings' only basket of the final period. New York outscored Dallas 20-3 over the first 8 1/2 minutes, capped by Jonquel Jones' 3-pointer that made it 88-82. Bueckers — with former UConn teammate Azzi Fudd in attendance wearing an 'I Heart PB' T-shirt — finally scored for Dallas, making two free throws with 1:06 remaining. After Jones missed a jumper, DiJonai Carrington made two free throws for a 92-82 lead with 54 seconds left. The Wings led 31-19 after the first quarter and extended their lead to 63-36 at halftime, when Ogunbowale became the first player in WNBA history to have at least 15 points and 10 assists in one half. Jones had 18 points for New York (17-8), which was playing without Breanna Stewart because of a right leg injury and lost its second straight. Sabrina Ionescu scored 17. Luisa Geiselsoder had 14 points for Dallas (8-19). Up next New York: Visits Minnesota on Wednesday in a matchup of the two conference leaders. Luka Dončić began training for offseason the day after the Lakers were eliminated from playoffs

Luka Dončić and the Lakers had an ugly end to their year last season, losing to the Wolves in five games in the first round of the playoffs. An early exit when you are the favored team and the No. 3 seed would irk anyone, but it clearly bothered Luka. So much so that he wasted no time getting ready for the 2025-26 NBA campaign, beginning his workout routine for the following year the very next day. In an exclusive with Men's Health, Andrew Heffernan and Ebenezer Samuel detailed Luka's quick start to his long summer. All Dončić wanted to do after this season ended was train, and he made that clear to his manager, Lara Beth Seager, on May 1, one day after the Lakers were ousted from the first round of the NBA playoffs. The loss was the nadir of Dončić's worst NBA season. For all the criticism of Dončić's body, until this past season, nobody could diss his body of work: He'd never played fewer than 60 games in a season, and just a year earlier, he'd powered the Mavs to the NBA Finals. No such luck in 2024. A calf injury knocked him out for all of January. Then Dallas sent him packing. Then came the 4-1 playoff series decimation at the hands of the Timberwolves. One day after that loss, Dončić texted Seager to start his offseason training program ASAP. 'So every summer I try my best to work on different things,' he says. 'Obviously, I'm very competitive. This summer was just a little bit different, you know. It kind of motivated me to be even better.' Luka getting his offseason training started immediately with some new, intense summer workouts is good for him and great for the Lakers. Dončić is already a five-time All-NBA player. Despite some disappointments last year and an ugly split with the Mavericks, his talent and results are already historically good. Even with his defensive flaws and questions about his conditioning, a Luka-led team has come out of the Western Conference and made it to the NBA Finals in 2024. The goal is always a title in Los Angeles. With Luka looking slimmer and taking advantage of this unusually long offseason, all signs indicate he will give himself the best chance at being in tip-top shape when training camp begins. If Luka does that, then we just might see a peak from Dončić that's never been seen before. Given what he's already accomplished as a basketball player, that should be an exciting proposition for Lakers fans and a potentially horrifying scenario for the rest of the NBA.
