Chennai, Jul 19 (PTI) Late Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu M Karunandhi's eldest son, M K Muthu, who was an actor and playback singer, died on Saturday due to age-related ailments, his family said.
This 77-year-old actor is the elder brother of Chief Minister M K Stalin. His MP sister Kanimozhi, after hearing the sad news while attending an event in Madurai, rushed back to the city to pay her last respects.
Stalin and his Deputy Chief Minister son Udhayanidhi rushed to Muthu's residence here to pay their respects to Muthu, born in 1948, who made a mark in the Tamil film industry.
Informing about the demise of Muthu due to old age, the state government said his body will be kept at the Gopalapuram residence of late Karunanidhi for the public to pay their respects. His last rites will be performed this evening, the release said.
'The news that the eldest son of Kalaignar (Karunanidhi) family, my dear brother M K Muthu, passed away struck me like a thunderbolt this morning. The grief of losing my beloved brother, who showed me affection on par with my mother and father, torments me," Stalin said.
Karunanidhi named him Muthu in memory of his father Muthuvel.
'Like Kalaignar, brother Muthu contributed to the Dravidian movement through plays from his youth. He had his own unique style in acting, dialogue delivery, and body language. Due to such energy and enthusiasm, he entered the film industry in 1970. He played a double role in his first film," the Chief Minister said in a post on the social media platform 'X'.
Muthu is eternally remembered in the hearts of Tamil fans through the films: Pillaiyo Pillai, Pookari, Samayalakaran, and Anayavilakku, he said.
'He had a special quality that many actors do not have. He had the ability to sing songs in his own voice sweetly. The song 'Nalla Manathil Kudiyirikkum Nagoor Andava' and the song 'Sonthakaaranga Enakku Romba Perunga' are songs that many people still cannot forget," he said.
He was always affectionate towards him and always encouraged him, Stalin said and added though his brother was no more he would always live in people's hearts through art, songs, and music. PTI JSP ROH

Task force formed to find out illegal Bangladeshi immigrants in Tripura: CM

Agartala, Jul 20 (PTI) Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha on Sunday said his government has constituted a special task force to find out illegal Bangladeshi immigrants in the northeastern state. His comment comes a day after Tipra Motha Party (TMP) supremo Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma revealed the formation of a special task force by the West Tripura district police to 'detect and deport' the illegal immigrants staying in the state, to their country of origin. 'The Centre has already decided to accept those people from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan who have taken refuge in India before 2014 due to religious persecution, he told the reporters. He was referring to the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019, which paves the way for granting Indian nationality to undocumented non-Muslim migrants — Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, Buddhists, Parsis and Christians — from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan, who came to India before December 31, 2014. 'There are attempts to create confusion on the issue. We have already constituted a special task force to identify if there is any influx or infiltration after December 2014. We will not accept those who came after December 2014 as per the Centre's decision and have been staying here illegally," he said. Notably, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has invited a delegation of the Tipra Motha Party (TMP) for a meeting on July 23 to discuss the concerns raised by it about the possible enrolment of illegal immigrants in Tripura's electoral rolls. Debbarma, in a social media post on Saturday, said, 'After we raised our concerns about possible enrolment of illegal immigrants in Tripura's voter roll and demanded a Bihar-like Special Intensive Revision (SIR), the Election Commission of India has called us for a meeting on July 23 to discuss these issues." Andhra liquor scam: Chargesheet reveals Jagan Mohan Reddy's role; YSRCP MP Midhun Reddy arrested

Former Andhra Pradesh chief minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy, left, and YSRCP MP PV Midhun Reddy NEW DELHI: Former Andhra Pradesh chief minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy has been named as a recipient of alleged kickbacks in a Rs 3,500 crore liquor scam, according to a chargesheet filed by the state police. The 305-page document, submitted to a local court on Saturday, claims Jagan received a share of Rs 50–60 crore every month during the 2019–2024 YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) regime. However, the chargesheet stops short of naming him as an accused. The court is yet to take cognizance of the chargesheet. "The collected amounts were eventually handed over to Kesireddy Rajasekhar Reddy(A-1). Rajasekhar Reddy would then pass the money to Vijay Sai Reddy (A-5), Mithun Reddy (A-4), Balaji (A-33) who would transfer it to former Chief Minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy. On an average, Rs 50-60 crore was collected every month (during the 2019-24 YSRCP regime)," the charge sheet said, as quoted by PTI. A key witness has reportedly corroborated these transactions. The report labels Rajasekhar Reddy as the "mastermind and co-conspirator" behind the liquor scam, alleging he manipulated the excise policy, replaced automated Order for Supply (OFS) systems with manual processes, and appointed loyalists in APSBCL (Andhra Pradesh State Beverages Corporation Limited). by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Genius Portable Cooler Keeps Your Home Cool & Saves You Money AiraBreeze Learn More Undo The chargesheet states that Rs 250–300 crore was routed in cash for election expenses of the YSRCP, coordinated by Rajasekhar Reddy and ex-MLA Chevireddy Bhaskar Reddy. The laundered money was allegedly invested in land, gold, and luxury assets in Dubai and Africa, via over 30 shell companies. "The accused planned the change in excise policy and also its modalities, to ensure that they would receive large kickbacks, majority portion of such kickbacks was received in cash, gold bullion etc," said the document. A key meeting with distillery owners was allegedly held at Hyderabad's Park Hyatt Hotel in late 2019. Organised by Sajjala Sridhar Reddy (A-6), the owners were reportedly threatened to cooperate with the manual OFS process and pay kickbacks of 12–20% or face order denials. "During the meeting, the owners were intimidated that if they do not accede to their proposals and no orders will be issued to them. Such intimidation for kickbacks by threatening them with no issuances of OFS and thereby receiving kickbacks amounts to extortion," the chargesheet quoted by PTI added. On Saturday, YSRCP MP PV Midhun Reddy was arrested by the special investigation team (SIT) after hours of questioning in connection with the scam. Earlier in May, the enforcement directorate (ED) registered a money laundering case under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) and filed an Enforcement Case Information Report (ECIR) to probe the alleged financial crimes. Reacting to Midhun Reddy's arrest, several YSRCP leaders including Botcha Satyanarayana, Perni Venkatramaiah (Nani), Ambati Rambabu, Merugu Nagarjuna, and G Srikanth Reddy issued a joint statement calling it a clear case of 'political vendetta" by the Chandrababu Naidu-led TDP government.
