Section 158BC applies when undisclosed income is unearthed during search or seizure operations conducted by the Income Tax Department. This section empowers the assessing officer to serve a notice requiring the taxpayer to file a return for a block assessment period, typically spanning six assessment years prior to the search. The return must be filed using Form ITR-B, which is specifically designed for this purpose.
Previously, filing Form ITR-B involved a largely manual process, often requiring physical submission and coordination with tax officers. With the launch of this new functionality, taxpayers can now digitally upload Form ITR-B through the e-Proceeding tab after logging in to their accounts on the portal.
This step not only enhances convenience but also aligns with the department's larger goal of creating a faceless, transparent, and technology-enabled tax ecosystem.
The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has urged all taxpayers who have received notices under Section 158BC to utilize the e-filing facility at the earliest. Detailed instructions are available on the portal for smooth and timely compliance.
This update is one among several recent initiatives taken by the Income Tax Department to digitize core tax processes and improve the ease of doing business in India. Experts have lauded the move, noting that it will reduce delays, minimize errors, and improve accountability in the post-search assessment workflow.
Taxpayers are encouraged to review their notices and proceed with online submission without delay.

Karnataka generates 200MW solar power under Kusum-C; 545MW to follow
Under the Kusum-C scheme, which aims to solarise agricultural feeders and provide daytime electricity supply to farmers' pumpsets, 200MW of electricity is being produced. In the coming months, 545MW of electricity will be generated, stated energy minister KJ George. Speaking to reporters after the energy department's progress review meeting of Hassan district, held on Friday at the Zilla Panchayat hall in the city, George said, "Under the Kusum-C scheme, construction of solar units with a capacity of around 200MW is completed. In the next few months, solar units with a capacity of 545MW will be commissioned at 93 locations. This will help provide an adequate daytime electricity supply to farmers." "The state govt has set a target of generating 2,400MW of solar electricity through feeder solarisation of agricultural pumpsets under the Kusum-C scheme. Recently, chief minister Siddaramaiah inaugurated a solar power unit established under the Kusum-C scheme in Gauribidanur. The feeder solarisation work is progressing at a rapid pace," the energy minister added. Under the Kusum-C scheme, generating 1MW of electricity requires 4 acres of land. If govt land is available, CM Siddaramaiah has directed that it be allocated free of cost. However, private power producers must pay ₹25,000 per acre, which will be deposited with the district commissioner and used to improve govt schools and anganwadis in villages where the substations are located, the minister elaborated. "If private land is used, developers awarded the power generation contracts will lease the land and pay landowners a minimum of ₹25,000 per acre," George said. Of the 4 lakh unauthorised irrigation pumpsets in the state, 3 lakh are already regularised. For pumpsets within 500m of power feeders, transformers will be installed by the department. Those beyond 500m will receive solar pumpsets under the Kusum-B scheme, he said. Earlier, during a progress review meeting, the district MLAs raised issues concerning the energy department in their constituencies. In response, George instructed the CESC MD to take swift action and reiterated that officials should proactively consult elected representatives and follow through on their suggestions. Mr. Trump also played down criticism by Democrats that the unpopular legislation will slash social welfare programs, saying: 'You won't even notice it.' With First Lady Melania Trump at his side, Mr. Trump watched from the White House balcony as two B-2 bombers — the same type that recently struck Iranian nuclear sites — roared overhead, accompanied by F-35 and F-22 fighter jets. The 79-year-old's victory lap came a day after Republicans fell into line and passed the sprawling mega-Bill, allowing him to sign it as he had hoped on the Fourth of July holiday. The Bill honours many of Mr. Trump's campaign promises: extending tax cuts from his first term, boosting military spending and providing massive new funding for Mr. Trump's migrant deportation drive. 'Never been anything like it' The legislation's signing caps two weeks of significant wins for Mr. Trump that have seen him tighten his grip on power and his party alike. The successes include the recent Iran-Israel ceasefire that was sealed after what he called the 'flawless' U.S. air strikes on Iran.
