After Curator's Death, Venice Biennale Will Realize Her Vision

The organizers of the Venice Biennale announced on Tuesday that next year's edition would go ahead as planned, despite the sudden death this month of Koyo Kouoh, the curator who was overseeing its main exhibition.
Kouoh died of cancer on May 10, just days before she was scheduled to reveal the title and theme of the event.
Cristiana Costanzo, a Biennale spokeswoman, told reporters at a news conference in Venice that next year's edition would run from May 9 through Nov. 22, and that a team of curators, art historians and editors who had been working with Kouoh would deliver her exhibition 'as she conceived and defined it.'
Kouoh had been preparing the exhibition for almost seven months, Costanzo said: Working with a five-member team, she had selected some of the participating artists and artworks, and given it a title, 'In Minor Keys.'
During Tuesday's news conference, members of the team used Kouoh's words to present her plan.
Gabe Beckhurst Feijoo, an art historian from the team, said that Kouoh had wanted her Biennale to be 'neither a litany of commentary on world events, nor an inattention or escape from compounding and continuously intersecting crises.' Instead, Beckhurst Feijoo said, Kouoh had wanted to present 'a radical reconnection with art's natural habitat and role in society — that is the emotional, the visual, the sensory, the affective, the subjective.'
Another team member, Marie Helene Pereira, a curator, explained the exhibition title. 'If in music, the minor keys are often associated with strangeness, melancholy and sorrow,' she said, in Kouoh's exhibition, they would also be associated with 'joy, solace, hope and transcendence.'
The team did not reveal the names of the artists who would appear in the show, although it said the main exhibition would include poetry and film. Costanzo said the Biennale would announce the full list of participating artists on Feb. 25, 2026.
In the lead-up to this announcement, the Venice Biennale curator usually spends months traveling the world, visiting artists' studios as the roster comes together. The presentation on Tuesday took place in front of a slide show of photographs that Kouoh and her team had taken on such journeys, including many that appeared to have been taken in Africa, Asia and South America.
Kouoh's team did not refer to the images during the presentation, but Costanzo said later in an email that 'the slide show was intended to communicate moods around the conceptualizing of the exhibition.'
All five members of Kouoh's team were unavailable for interview, Costanzo said.
First held in 1895, the Venice Biennale is one of the art world's most important events, and every edition includes a large-scale group show, organized by a curator, alongside dozens of national pavilions that participating countries stage independently.
When the Biennale's organizers asked Kouoh to oversee the main exhibition, she was the first African woman to receive such an invitation. She had made a name for herself as the chief curator of the Zeitz MOCAA in Cape Town, though she also worked on the curatorial teams of several major international exhibitions, including two editions of Documenta in Germany. She was 57 when she died.
In an interview with The New York Times in December, Kouoh said that she had wanted to make an 'artist-centered' exhibition that 'really speaks to our times.' She added: 'The artists will define where we go.'
Tuesday's presentation ended with a reading of a poem that Kouoh wrote in 2022 and had wanted to present at the news conference. 'I am tired, people are tired, we are all tired,' her poem began: 'Even art itself is tired.'
'We need to be with beauty,' Kouoh wrote, 'and lots of it.'

The trend, that popped up seemingly out-of-the-blue and has now spread like wildfire, is an homage to a pose Nicki Minaj clocked in her 2013 music video, 'High-School,' balancing on sky-high beige heels beside a pool while rocking a long blonde wig and bubble-gum pink bikini. Twelve years later, an ordinary scene from an old rap video is now one of the most viral moments of the 2025 summer run, racking up over one billion views and counting. Every post appears aimed at outdoing the one before it, with TikTokers upping the stakes by balancing on increasingly outrageous household items like soda cans or cooking pots. So what's behind the latest wave of internet peacocking? We spoke to Columbia-trained psychologist, Bea Arthur, about why the high-heeled challenge has the social media world in a chokehold. Feminine Strength In A #TradeWife Era Arthur said that one of the driving forces motivating the trend's popularity is the 'brag-a-docious aura' of Nicki herself. 'One of the things that makes Black women so awesome and Black people so awesome is that we give ourselves confidence, that cockiness,' she said. The pose celebrates feminine prowess and seemingly superhuman strength, which is a visually captivating combination. 'The core strength in heels, it's so feminine. All the girls who were doing it in stripper shoes, I was like, 'Yes,'' Arthur said. 'And how they kept elevating it too. I think Ciara did it on three dumbbells,' she said. The pose is naturally defiant in a #tradewife era that demands women be more demure and submissive. Arthur said this trend calls forth a new message: 'The bad bitch will never die.' Showing Off Is In Our DNA Arthur, whose family is from Ghana, says that culturally, people of African descent tend to be 'shamelessly cocky,' a thread of gold we derived from our struggles. 'You look at hip-hop, we had to call ourselves kings. We had to put on gold. We had to flex, because it literally wasn't given.' She said in Black gay culture, we see the rise of the ballroom king and queen archetypes, who flounce about in a shamelessly vain way, but that's the magic marginalized people must tap into to create their own sense of value outside of systems of oppression. 'The human soul seeks balance at all times in our actions,' Arthur said. 'We seek to be understood, and we seek to be known on a subconscious level.' Participating in a trend like #thenickiminajchallenge is a chance to be seen and known by others, which is a form of self-regulation, albeit brief, she said. But seeking validation online can come with a dark side, especially for people who struggle with social isolation. Arthur said posting can cause spikes in dopamine, our brain's pleasure chemical, which can literally change social media from a pastime into an addiction. 'We're alone. Right? We're watching Netflix. We're scrolling. We're in the house. We're not connected. And so these likes feel like love.' she said. Social Media As Community Arthur said that it's no coincidence that TikTok's popularity took off during COVID when humans were socially and emotionally secluded for months. Viral trends give users an opportunity to feel a part of something, even if it's online and not in-person. 'We need community. We're social animals or tribal creatures, so we need to feel part of something and to be seen. These needs are innate, just like food and water,' she said. Being alone triggers cortisol, which is the body's stress hormone, to be more present in the blood, according to research. So viral trend participants may feel a sense of belonging and alignment by posting. 'That's why athletes love sports so much,' she said. 'Being with other people who love the game as much as you, is a beautiful thing, a necessary thing. Again, we are tribal social animals, but once it becomes ego serving, then it's an addiction, and then it's destructive,' Arthur said. Black America's 2025 summer anthem may actually be a line dance steeped in African history and tradition. The catchy 'Boots on the Ground' song by South Carolina rapper 803Fresh seems to be everywhere — at picnics, reunions, front lawns, block parties, cruise ships and festivals — with droves of African Americans waving fans and chanting the viral phrase, 'Where them fans at?' The signature Southern Soul line dance song was released in December. It recently surged in popularity after everyday people and celebrities alike began donning cowboy outfits and performing the choreography for a TikTok challenge. The momentum has only continued building. 'Southern Soul music has been underground for years but this particular song brings the cowboy culture into a place where everyone can participate,' said Ramal 'The Hometown Heat' Brown, a former hip-hop disc jockey at 105.3 KJAMZ in Tulsa, Oklahoma. 'It brings a country feel to city life.' Some of those who participated in the viral 'Boots on the Ground' challenge, which got millions of views on social media, are former NBA star Shaquille O'Neal and first lady Michelle Obama. The official music video for the song, posted on YouTube two months ago, has been seen 12 million times. During an intermission at the Winter Park Jazz Festival in Colorado last weekend, a disc jockey joked that someone paid him $100 to play the song. And when he did, hundreds in attendance, regardless of race, found whatever little space was available on the vast, crowded lawn to take a spin. Others stood up to watch and learn it. Culture critic Blue Telusma credits the success of Beyoncé's 2024 album 'Cowboy Carter' with paving the way for 'Boots on the Ground.' 'Carter' won the Grammy Awards for album of the year and best country album by exploring and highlighting the overlooked contributions of Black people to music and culture. While some balked at Beyoncè's formal entry into country, Telusma said it was an instrumental step toward reclaiming the genre for people of color. 'Blacks, Mexicans and Latinos have a deep history in cowboy culture that we often don't get credit for, and the same ancestral DNA that I suspect that Beyoncé tapped into by doing 'Cowboy Carter' is what line dancing means in the Black community,' Telusma said. Traditionally, for the ancestors and enslaved Africans who built America, line dancing was a form of spiritual communal dancing. 'It was a way for people during really nasty times to get together in a barn or a speakeasy and dance as a collective,' Telusma said. Some say the way 'Boots' sounds allows for an intergenerational appreciation of the song. Part of the song is derived from trail-ride culture, where Black Southerners would have cookouts before mounting their horses while dressed in vests and colorful cowboy attire and ride through different neighborhoods to show off their livestock, said 37-year-old Denver resident China Scroggins. She also agrees the song is tied to African ancestral traditions. 'There's something very culturally and historically sound about the way Black Americans and their ancestors moved in order to overcome,' said Scroggins, who taught herself the dance after watching several viral videos earlier this year. 'The song came out when people needed to hear it coming off of a presidential election — being in step with each other. And the song and dance was easy to adapt, and it was fun.' Radio-friendly line dances like the 'Electric Slide' in the 1980s and later the 'Cupid Shuffle' and 'The Wobble' have long been a part of Black culture.
