Visit Pembrokeshire marks Wales Tourism Week by highlighting the county's vital visitor economy
VISIT PEMBROKESHIRE is marking Wales Tourism Week 2025 by shining a spotlight on the county's thriving visitor economy – a key pillar of local life that is both culturally enriching and economically essential.
Tourism in Pembrokeshire contributes an estimated £604 million to the local economy each year, welcoming over 6.3 million visitors and supporting 23% of all local employment. It stands alongside energy and agriculture as one of the county's three economic cornerstones.
However, the value of tourism goes far beyond economic impact. It supports local supply chains, preserves cultural and natural heritage, and helps sustain services in rural communities. As the only UK National Park primarily designated for its coastal landscape, Pembrokeshire's natural beauty continues to attract visitors from around the world.

Neil Kedward, Chief Executive of Seren Collection and Chair of Visit Pembrokeshire, said: 'Tourism is the lifeblood of Pembrokeshire – it supports thousands of livelihoods, sustains our rural communities, and showcases the very best of Welsh culture and our extraordinary land and seascapes to the world.
'Its value goes beyond visitor spend. It fuels and binds our local supply chains, sustains hospitality and creative businesses, and keeps vital services working in rural areas.
'As we mark Wales Tourism Week, it's time to recognise not only the economic value of our visitors, but the way tourism enriches lives, preserves our heritage, and strengthens our sense of place. Investing in sustainable, high-quality tourism really is investing in the future of Pembrokeshire and the wellbeing of our communities.'
Tourism in the county is a diverse and dynamic ecosystem, encompassing accommodation providers, attractions, activity organisers, artists, retailers, food and drink producers, heritage organisations and more. Despite its diversity, 99% of tourism-related businesses in Pembrokeshire are microbusinesses—many operating in remote or rural locations.

Emma Thornton Visit Pembrokeshire Chief Executive added: 'We support and connect businesses and organisations involved in tourism with each other, and our mantra is 'stronger together'. Visit Pembrokeshire is the glue that brings people together, delivering Pembrokeshire's 2024–28 Destination Management Plan in collaboration with public and private sector partners.'
Visit Pembrokeshire was launched in November 2020 as the county's official Destination Management Organisation (DMO) – the first of its kind in Wales. Its role is to champion sustainable, year-round tourism that balances the needs of visitors with those of residents, while spreading footfall more evenly across the county to ease pressure on popular hotspots.

Local MP Henry Tufnell also praised the sector, saying: 'Tourism is absolutely central to Pembrokeshire – not only as a cornerstone of our local economy, but as a reflection of the pride we take in our landscapes, heritage and communities.
'While the sector has faced real challenges in recent years, the dedication and resilience shown by local businesses, supported by organisations like Visit Pembrokeshire, is truly inspiring. With continued support and collaboration, I'm confident tourism in the county has a bright and sustainable future.'
The Wales Tourism Week campaign highlights the value of tourism across the nation, and Pembrokeshire's events and achievements this week serve as a reminder of just how deeply embedded tourism is in the county's identity.

Craig Senior was refused planning permission for the bungalow which would have been built on land at the back of number 65 Main Road, Portskewett. He appealed to Welsh planning body Planning and Environment Decisions Wales which sent independent inspector Anthony Thickett to view the narrow track that was proposed as an access from Main Road to the bungalow. He concluded Monmouthshire County Council was right to refuse planning permission and wrote in his report: 'I note the site is within walking distance of a number of facilities but the proposed development would inevitably lead to an increase in the use of an access which is substandard with regards to its width and visibility to Main Road. 'For these reasons, I conclude that the proposed development would have an adverse impact on highway safety.' Mr Thickett said the track already serves nine properties, including number 65, and a field though four properties have drives on to main road and he thought a further off street parking space has been created but said: 'From my observations, the occupiers of at least five properties (not counting No. 65) actively use the track to access garages and parking spaces to the rear of the houses.' He described its visibility at the access to Main Road as 'poor in both directions' with a wall and telegraph pole to the east and a wall to the west while a line of parked cars either side of the track 'limited visibility even further'. READ MORE: Extension for Portskewett shop approved by councillors As the track isn't wide enough for vehicles to enter and exit at the same time Mr Thickett said drivers waiting to turn in would restrict the 'free flow' of traffic on Main Road and stated: 'Drivers approaching the track would have little warning of vehicles exiting the track and vice versa.' He also said vehicles turning left, from the track, to pass a vehicle waiting to enter the track, would have to cross on to the wrong side of the road, due to the line of parked cars. Mr Thickett also said he didn't believe widening the track to provide a footway would overcome the poor visibility to Main Road.

Speaking at Welsh Labour conference in Llandudno, Ms Stevens criticised both parties who pose a serious electoral threat to her party at the upcoming Senedd election, if poll projects are correct. She said: "Our opponents are two sides of the same coin. Plaid and Reform are divisive nationalists determined to rip our country apart. One with no plan to pay for the NHS, another with plans to sell it off to the highest bidder. ‌ "They will destroy the work we have done to create thousands of jobs in renewable energy, in advanced manufacturing, in defence. They will stop our free prescriptions and halt the progress made on waiting lists," she said. The next election will be fought under a new voting system, with new constituencies and will increase the number of Senedd members from 60 to 96 at a cost of billions. Article continues below In his speech, to open the event, Prime Minister attacked Nigel Farage saying he has "no plan" for Wales. He said the Reform UK leader 'isn't interested in Wales'. Referencing Mr Farage's visit to Port Talbot where he said his party wanted to look at reopening mines in Wales and said that the blast furnaces at the Tata plant in Port Talbot should be restarted. The Port Talbot proposal was widely criticised as being unrealistic. You can read about that here. Mr Farage himself admitted it would cost 'in the low billions' and industry experts and members said not only is the cost prohibitive but it is impossible to restart a closed blast furnace. ‌ He didn't directly criticise the reopening of coals mines suggestion by Mr Farage but did use the opportunity to highlight things his administration had done in terms of committing money to coal tip regeneration and miners' pensions. "Nigel Farage isn't interested in Wales, he's interested in Nigel Farage, he takes people for fools. "Just look what he said earlier this month, going to Port Talbot pretending he's got a plan to reopen the blast furnace, he's got no idea what he's talking about. He's got no plan at all. ‌ "Let's be clear. What Reform's plans would be mean in practice. Cancelling the electric arc furnace, cancelling the construction work that's on track to start in just a few weeks time, cancelling the 5,000 jobs it'll bring. "That's all you ever need to know about Reform," he said. Reform UK is polling to take seats in the Senedd and a recent UK Parliamentary poll by YouGov showed they would take 23 seats off Labour.
