Jun 2025 US logistics managers' index up 1.3 points MoM to 60.7

Fibre2Fashion2 days ago
The June US logistics manager's index (LMI) was 60.7—up by 1.3 points from May's reading of 59.4.
The increase in the overall index was driven by an increase in the rate of expansion for inventory levels, which was up by 8.3 points to 59.8.
The June US logistics manager's index was 60.7â€'up by 1.3 points from May's 59.4â€'driven by a rise in the rate of expansion for inventory levels. The movement back above 60 marks only the third time since July 2022. As all three of those readings have come in the last six months indicates the heightened, and somewhat unseasonal, level of activity that has been seen in the supply chain in H1 2025.
This expansion mostly occurred in the first half of June, when the metric read in at a robust 67.4 as importers scrambled to take advantage of the pause in the most punitive tariffs, an official release said.
The movement back above 60 marks only the third time since July 2022. All three of those readings above 60 have come in 2025, which is a marked shift from 2023 and 2024 when that threshold was never breached in the overall index.
The fact that all three of those readings have come in the last six months is indicative of the heightened, and somewhat unseasonal, level of activity that has been witnessed in the supply chain through the first half of 2025. While this has been positive in the short-run, it does raise questions on whether the same level of demand will be present in the second half of the year when we would normally see it picking up, the release observed.
The uncertainty exists due to both the high levels of inventory already in the U.S., as well as the continued ambiguity regarding future U.S. trade policy.
Inventory levels expansion declined to 52.2 in the second half of the month. The influx of inventories led inventory costs to rise by 2.5 points to 80.9, the first time this metric has been above 80 since October 2022, when supply chains were still in the throes of the post-COVID inventory bullwhip, an official release said.
The effects of the continued inventory buildup are also evident in warehousing capacity dropping by 2.2 points to 47.8, contracting for the first time since January 2023.
Similar to last month, the LMI transportation metrics are relatively stable, although it is worth noting that transportation capacity dropped by 2.3 points to 52.4, which is close to contraction. Transportation capacity has not contracted since March 2022, and therefore, if this trend continues, it would mark a real shift.
Transportation utilization (plus 0.3) and transportation prices (minus 1.1) were relatively steady. The swings seen with inventories have kept freight markets humming at a steady, if not spectacular pace, the release noted.
The most direct evidence of the strain of the high levels of inventories being held in supply chains can be seen in warehousing capacity, which was down by 2.2 point to 47.8. This is the first time this metric has been in contraction since January 2023.
The contraction in available capacity is driven by smaller respondents, who reported steep contraction at 43.3 to the mild expansion of 53.2 reported by their larger counterparts. Due to this, smaller firms also reported warehousing prices expanding faster than larger respondents at a rate of 71.7 to 64.9.
Warehousing utilisation expansion was down very slightly (minus 0.3) to 62.2 in June. It was statistically significantly higher upstream, where respondents reported expansion of 65.7 in stark contrast with the 53.8 reported downstream.
This is likely reflective of the fact that downstream firms were already utilising much of their available capacity and upstream firms are taking on most of the new inventory that is being imported into the country.
Despite this difference, both groups of respondents predicted strong growth for warehousing prices at 69.9 upstream and 65.2 downstream. These figures are fairly consistent with current warehousing pricing, which is expanding at a rate of 68.3—still high but down (minus 3.8) from May's reading.
Researchers at Arizona State University, Colorado State University, Florida Atlantic University, Rutgers University, and the University of Nevada, Reno, and in conjunction with the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals (CSCMP) issue the LMI report.
The LMI score is a combination of eight unique components that make up the logistics industry: inventory levels and costs, warehousing capacity, utilisation, and prices, and transportation capacity, utilisation, and prices.

SCR awaits A.P's share to resume Kovvur–Bhadrachalam rail project

Authorities of the South Central Railway (SCR) are awaiting the release of the Andhra Pradesh State government's cost share to expedite the Kovvur-Bhadrachalam railway line project in the State. Originally estimated at ₹1,445 crore, the project cost has increased to over ₹2,100 crore owing to the delays in execution. The project was proposed on a 50:50 cost share basis between Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. The State of Telangana has already released its full share and completed and commissioned the 56-kilometer-long railway line from Bhadrachalam to Sathupalli. Work in Andhra Pradesh is stalled. At a meeting in Hyderabad on July 15, SCR general manager Sanjay Kumar Srivastava told Rajamahendravaram MP D. Purandeswari, 'We are waiting for the release of the cost share by the Andhra Pradesh State government to proceed with the Kovvur-Bhadrachalam railway line project. The Telangana State had already released its due share'. The project is targeted to be completed and commissioned by April 2030. Tenders for modernisation Responding to an appeal by Ms. Purandeswari to speed up the ₹271 crore modernisation of the Rajahmundry railway station ahead of the Godavari Pushkarams-2027, Mr. Sanjay Kumar assured that tenders would be invited within a week. Ms. Purandeswari alleged that the tenders had not been invited, despite funds being released six months ago. Kovvur station She also raised the issue of reduced train halts at the Kovvur railway station. She said: 'As many as 18 trains, including those destined to Chennai and Tirupati via Kovvur, used to halt at Kovvur railway station. However, post-covid, only eight trains halt there. The major trains which no longer make stops at Kovvur include the Tirumala, Seshadri and Sarkar Express trains.' She urged the SCR to reconsider train halts at Kovvur. Mr. Sanjay Kumar was further urged to resume local train operations from Rajahmundry to Bhimavaram, Tanuku and Narsapuram which were suspended during COVID-19. In regards to the electrification of the Nidadavole railway line, Ms. Purandeswari said that ₹6 crore is still required to connect the line to the main power supply to complete the ₹150 crore line electrification project.

Why Starbucks wants its leaders in Seattle or Toronto and what it means for US remote work

Starbucks mandates relocation for corporate leaders as US remote work policies tighten. (AI Image) Starbucks has announced a significant change to its remote work policy for corporate employees, requiring many of its people leaders to be based in either Seattle or Toronto within 12 months. The Seattle-based company is increasing the number of days corporate employees must work in the office from three to four days a week starting early October, signalling a shift away from remote working arrangements. Brian Niccol, Starbucks chairman and CEO, addressed employees in a letter posted on Monday, stating the company's intention to reestablish its in-office culture. Niccol wrote, "We do our best work when we're together. We share ideas more effectively, creatively solve hard problems, and move much faster," as quoted by the Associated Press. The move comes amid wider changes in the US workplace, where several major employers have been calling employees back to company sites. Detailed requirements for corporate leaders Starbucks' new policy specifically requires all corporate "people leaders" to relocate to either Seattle or Toronto within the next year. This expands on a previous February mandate that only required vice presidents to move to these cities. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like An engineer reveals: One simple trick to get internet without a subscription Techno Mag Learn More Undo Individual employees reporting to these leaders will not be required to relocate, but all future hiring and lateral moves will require employees to be based in one of these two locations. The company has approximately 16,000 corporate support employees worldwide, including roles such as coffee roasters and warehouse staff, though Starbucks spokeswoman Lori Torgerson did not provide exact figures for how many corporate employees currently work remotely or as "people leaders," as reported by the Associated Press. Niccol himself was initially exempt from relocation when he was hired last August, with Starbucks offering support for an office near his Newport Beach, California home and use of a corporate jet to commute to Seattle. However, he has since purchased a home in Seattle and regularly works from the company's headquarters, Torgerson added. Implications for US remote work trends The Starbucks decision reflects a broader trend in the US corporate sector, where companies including Amazon, AT&T, and the federal government have tightened remote work policies, often requiring employees to return to the office five days a week. These moves come as many workers, having grown accustomed to working from home during the Covid-19 pandemic, face a shift back to in-person work. Employees affected by the new Starbucks policy who choose not to relocate will be eligible for a one-time voluntary exit programme that includes a cash payment, the company confirmed. This signals a clear stance on prioritising in-office collaboration and presence, as Starbucks aims to foster faster decision-making and greater creativity within its teams. The company's updated remote work policy for corporate staff and relocation requirements for leaders may influence workplace norms across the US, highlighting ongoing debates about the future of work and the balance between remote flexibility and in-person collaboration. Housing sales drop 20% in Q2 despite value gains, premium demand holds firm

India's housing market took a hit in the second quarter of the calendar year, with home sales across the top seven cities dropping 20 per cent year-on-year (Y-o-Y), Anarock 's Pan India Residential Market report for Q2 2025 showed. Despite that, overall sales value edged up by 1 per cent to ₹1.47 trillion — a clear sign that buyers are leaning toward fewer but higher-value homes. While the number of units sold declined to 96,300 across the top seven cities, sustained appetite for luxury homes kept average ticket sizes strong, reinforcing the premiumisation trend now defining the sector. Home prices rise Average home prices across major cities climbed 11 per cent to ₹8,990 per sq ft, driven by a 27 per cent spike in Delhi-NCR and 12 per cent in Bengaluru. While repo rate cuts offered some relief, affordability remains a growing concern, particularly for middle-income buyers. Housing launches decline, but outpace Covid-19 New project launches fell 16 per cent from the same quarter last year, totalling 98,600 units. That's also a slight 1 per cent dip compared to Q1 2025. Still, supply remains 64 per cent higher than pre-pandemic levels, showing underlying strength in the market, the report said. Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), Bengaluru, Pune, and NCR led with 78 per cent of total launches. Chennai outperformed with a 79 per cent sequential and 63 per cent annual surge in fresh supply — the strongest growth among metros. City sales: Chennai surges, MMR and Pune slip Chennai was the only major market to post annual sales growth, rising 13 per cent Y-o-Y and 40 per cent over the previous quarter. NCR and Hyderabad also saw quarterly gains of 14 per cent and 9 per cent, respectively. In contrast, sales in MMR and Pune — traditionally strong performers — fell sharply by 25 per cent and 27 per cent, respectively. Despite the volume drop, value remained steady thanks to rising prices and a shift toward more expensive homes. If demand stays focused on premium categories, this trend is likely to continue. Luxury housing: Highest launches Luxury housing (₹1.5–₹2.5 crore) accounted for 27 per cent of all new launches, the largest share among segments. High-end (₹80 lakh–₹1.5 crore) and mid-end (₹40–₹80 lakh) followed with 21 per cent each. Meanwhile, affordable housing (<₹40 lakh) slipped to just 12 per cent of new supply. Developers in Hyderabad and Bengaluru ramped up the ultra-luxury supply, while MMR saw a rare uptick in affordable launches. Overall, though, developers across India continued shifting toward high-margin projects. Lesser unsold units Unsold inventory fell 3 per cent Y-o-Y to 562,000 units. Pune led with a 15 per cent drop, followed by MMR at 9 per cent. Conversely, Bengaluru saw a 30 per cent spike, reflecting a mismatch between launches and absorption. High-end homes now make up 30 per cent of all unsold inventory, while the ultra-luxury segment accounts for 10 per cent, raising red flags around oversupply in pockets like NCR. Recovery expected in H2 2025 The second half of the year could bring a recovery, helped by falling interest rates, faster project approvals, and the traditional festive-season boost. Developers are optimistic, projecting a 21 per cent rise in pre-sales for FY26, fueled by better execution and capital inflows. Land buying has already crossed ₹30,885 crore in the first half, 1.05 times the total for all of 2024. With developers becoming more selective, the focus now is on balancing luxury offerings with affordability.
