This Is the No. 1 U.S. State for a Road Trip Thanks to Its Safety, Low Congestion, and Pancake-flat Highways

If you love a good road trip, then chances are you're always plotting out your next route and all the exciting things you get to pull over and see along the way. But before you go, you should know that some states are better than others to drive through on your getaway. And if you hate traffic, you may want to stay on the mainland.
In January, WalletHub released its data analyzing the best and worst states to drive through in the U.S. To figure out which states have the best commuting conditions, it compared all states across four key metrics: the cost of owning and maintaining a car (which included the average price of gas), the average traffic patterns and infrastructure, road safety, and access to vehicles. Each metric was then graded on a 100-point scale, and each state was given a weighted average to calculate its overall score.
After looking at all that information, it named Kansas the best state for driving. "Kansas is the best state for drivers, due in large part to the quality and safety of its roads," the findings stated. It added that the state also scored the third-highest for road quality in the U.S. and added that the roads are 'flatter than a pancake' for added safety.
"Kansas has the sixth-most roadway miles per capita in the country, yet its residents enjoy the seventh-lowest average commute time by car, at just over 20 minutes," it added. "That suggests that while the population may be spread out, people tend to live close to their jobs and don't get stuck in traffic often. Since Kansas has a small population and lots of farmland, it makes sense that it has the seventh-lowest traffic congestion rate, too."
Joining Kansas at the top of the list is Idaho in second due to the "success it's had in decreasing deaths on the road. Between 2021 and 2022 (the most recent years for which data is available), the state's traffic fatality rate decreased by nearly 20 percent, the highest percentage in the country," the findings stated. Idaho also has the fifth-lowest prevalence of speeding and the fourth-lowest prevalence of harsh braking, making it a pretty safe place for driving.
And rounding out the top three spots is Indiana, which has the second-best road quality and the ninth-lowest traffic congestion in the nation. "It also takes road safety very seriously, with the fourth-strictest driving laws. These factors have helped improve driving conditions in the state, with traffic fatalities declining by nearly 17 percent between 2021 and 2022, the third-highest percentage," WalletHub noted.
As for where you may want to avoid driving, Hawaii came in last due to its frequent rain, few maintenance shops, and high gas prices. But, if you're driving around in Hawaii, odds are your vacation is still going pretty well anyway. See all the results at wallethub.com.

North Carolina DMV audit recommends reforms to reverse customer wait times, worker morale

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Customers at North Carolina's Division of Motor Vehicles are waiting longer in lines that are often far away from home, while agency staffing fails to keep pace with the state's surging population, according to agency reviews that also recommend major reforms. Elected Republican Auditor Dave Boliek on Monday released two audits totaling nearly 600 pages that scrutinize the DMV — the bane of motorists in many states. But long lines and frustrations are acute in the ninth-largest state. 'Our DMV affects the economy. It affects people having to take off of work unnecessarily. It takes our students out of the classroom,' Boliek told reporters. 'This has to be fixed and it has to be a top priority.' Constituent complaints, REAL ID brings problems to fore Boliek promised during last year's campaign to conduct a top-to-bottom review of the DMV if elected. Elected leaders' constituents have complained about the inability to book appointments online close to home and the struggles for their teenagers to complete driving tests. It's not unusual for customers to camp outside driver's license offices in the wee hours hoping to get seen later that day. Problems continued as federal REAL ID license security standards took effect in May. Erin Van Dorn of Holly Springs said at Boliek's news conference it took her and her teenage son four trips to the DMV — the last time 130 miles (209 kilometers) away in Mount Airy — to obtain his license. Information technology and staffing shortages were to blame. 'My son has missed a total of four days of school,' Van Horn said. 'It's just been a very big ordeal for us.' New Democratic Gov. Josh Stein's administration brought in former state legislator Paul Tine as the new Division of Motor Vehicles commissioner and has pledged a turnaround. Longer waits, continued examiner shortages A DMV performance audit Monday said average wait times for customers at the state's driver's license locations increased by over 15% since 2019 to 1 hour and 15 minutes. And close to 14% of the wait times lasted over 2 hours and 30 minutes — a 79% increase from 2019. And nearly half of all transactions by customers aren't happening at the license office closest to where they live. 'The employee experience has diminished as well,' Boliek said. The audit said there were 160 vacant license examiner positions as of April. And while the state's population has grown by 29% over the last 20 years, the number of examiner positions has grown by just 10%. Boliek's staff heard DMV employee complaints about burnout, security and low pay — average examiner position salaries were well below $50,000 last year. The audit attributes many problems to DMV's relationship to the Cabinet-level state Department of Transportation that oversees the agency. The auditor said DMV has undersized influence within DOT when it comes to decision-making and getting budget requests approved by the legislature. Agency independence among recommendations Boliek's most significant recommendation is for policymakers to consider turning DMV into an autonomous agency separate from DOT. Boliek said the recommendation is no slight upon Tine and current Teansportation Secretary Joey Hopkins, whom he said are taking steps toward reform. But he said a permanent change is needed to address situations where the commissioner and secretary don't cooperate as well. Other recommendations include creating a public online dashboard measuring keys performance goals and initiating nonconventional initiatives to reduce wait times and backlogs. Boliek said outside driving school instructors could administer road tests required of new drivers. The DMV could open 'pop-up' license offices at a vacant mall anchor store or create 'fast-pass' options for customers who pay extra to reach the front of the line. 'We can't keep doing things the same old way," he said. DMV, DOT chiefs back most recommendations In a written response to the audits, Tine and Hopkins agreed with nearly all of the recommendations and said many already getting carried out. But they opposed the recommendation to separate DMV, saying the agency's core functions align with the Transportation Department's mission to improve highway safety. 'We know that with the right leadership and follow-through, we will get results -– getting people out of lines and empowering our hard-working DMV employees," Stein spokesperson Morgan Hopkins said. The GOP-controlled General Assembly could still attempt to implement the change. A stopgap budget measure on Stein's desk provides funds to hire over 60 license examiners. And a new state law has established a temporary moratorium on renewing standard licenses, allowing them to remain valid within North Carolina for up to two years beyond the expiration date. Gary D. Some Foreign Tourists Must Soon Pay $15,000 Bond To Enter U.S.

The U.S. State Department will require tourists and business travelers from some countries to provide a steep financial guarantee they will not overstay their visas—the latest initiative by the government to tighten requirements for foreign visitors. Sticker shock: The Trump administration will charge some foreign visitors up to $15,000 to enter the U.S. getty The State Department announced a 12-month pilot program under which people from some countries could be required to post bonds of $5,000, $10,000 or $15,000 when they apply for a visa, according to a preview of a notice that will be published Tuesday in the Federal Register. The pilot program targets 'aliens applying for visas as temporary visitors for business or pleasure (B-1/B-2)' from countries with 'high visa overstay rates, where screening and vetting information is deemed deficient.' The notice does not name the affected countries or detail how tourists would reclaim the refunded bond at the end of their stay. The program will also target countries offering Citizenship by Investment programs with no residency requirement—a more lax policy of some immigration-by-investment programs in the Caribbean, European and Middle East. 'The scope of the visa bond pilot program appears to be limited, with an estimated 2,000 applicants affected, most likely from only a few countries with relatively low travel volume to the United States,' Erik Hansen, senior vice president of government relations at U.S. Travel Association (USTA), said in a statement. Last month, Congress announced a $250 visa integrity fee for most non-immigrant U.S. visas, including tourist visas, beginning in 2026. A recent study from the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) that analyzed the economic impact of tourism in 184 countries revealed the U.S. was the only country forecast to see international visitor spending decline in 2025—in part due to a number of Trump administration initiatives that make it more difficult or expensive for foreign travelers to enter the U.S. 'We remain most concerned with the $250 visa integrity fee recently enacted by Congress, which would apply across all nonimmigrant visa categories and applicants,' Hansen said, noting the fee would mean 'the U.S. will have one of, if not the highest, visitor visa fees in the world.' For the U.S. to remain competitive in the global travel market, 'it's critical that U.S. visa policy reflects both national security priorities and the significant economic value of international visitation,' Hansen added. Big Number $254 billion. That's how much international tourists spent on U.S. travel and tourism-related goods and services in 2024, according to the International Trade Administration. Whether yet another financial hurdle for tourists will impact attendance at World Cup 2026. In March, FIFA projected the soccer tournament will drive $30.5 billion in economic output in the U.S., according to an analysis by OpenEconomics (OE). But that number was predicated on the assumption the U.S. will see an 'influx of visitors' from foreign countries to fill stadiums and hotels. FIFA has told World Cup host cities to expect a 50/50 split between domestic and international visitors, multiple host city tourism officials told Forbes. Chief Critic 'Raising fees on lawful international visitors amounts to a self-imposed tariff on one of our nation's largest exports: international travel spending,' Geoff Freeman, president of the U.S. Travel Association (USTA), said in a statement last month when the visa integrity fee was announced.
