Call for action to protect prison officers ‘before there is a fatality'
A prison officers' union has called for urgent action to protect guards from violence after attacks at two jails.
One officer at HMP Woodhill near Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire, was slashed in the neck and ear with an improvised weapon on Tuesday, and needed hospital treatment, the Prison Officers' Association said.
In a second incident another inmate assaulted a member of staff, the POA said.
Four officers in total needed hospital treatment but were discharged on Tuesday.
At Gartree prison in Leicestershire, a female officer was left with a broken bone after an inmate faked a seizure and threw a TV at her colleague.
Geoff Willetts, from the POA, said that at HMP Woodhill: 'A prisoner was told to return to his cell, this resulted in a specialist officer being slashed with an improvised weapon, sustaining injuries to the neck and ear.
'The officer attended hospital where they required stitches and surgical glue applied to their injuries.'
He added: 'Meanwhile at Gartree Prison, Market Harborough, staff attended a medical emergency where a prisoner faked an epileptic fit.
'A prison officer who attended to assist was assaulted then had a TV thrown at him and a female officer sustained a broken arm.'
The POA repeated calls for boosted protection for prison officers.
POA general secretary Steve Gillan said: 'Escalating levels of violence are out of control in the prison service in England and Wales.
'It is clear prison regimes must be reviewed as a matter of urgency. We need action to protect prison officers before there is a fatality.'
Thames Valley Police said they were investigating an attack on a member of staff at HMP Woodhill.
Leicestershire Police has been approached for comment.
A prison service spokesperson said: 'Officers at HMP Woodhill attended hospital yesterday following two separate incidents. All were discharged on the same day.
'We will do whatever is necessary to keep our staff safe.
'The Lord Chancellor has announced a review into protective body armour and a trial of Tasers in jails to better respond to serious incidents and will update shortly.'

THE Vivienne was found in a bathtub by a neighbour after lying dead in the water for a "couple of days", an inquest heard today. 'As we got to the top of the stairs, Ryan went one way and I turned right. James' bedroom is there and there is a door to the ensuite. 'And then I walked past James' bed and into the bathroom and saw James in the bath, he just looked like he was sleeping." A paramedic who was called to the home said rigor mortis had already set in and it was evident Williams had been in the water for a "couple of days". The inquest was told the star had a "significant history of substance misuse, including the use of ketamine, cocaine and alcohol." Williams' best friend Bobby Musker said in the days leading up to the tragedy, the pair had been sending memes, videos and voicenotes to each other. Bobby said Williams had been to Liverpool a couple of times, which he believes was to pick up ketamine. He last spoke to the drag queen on January 3 at 8.22pm in a video call. Bobby, who knew Williams for around 16 years, added: "I could kind of tell when he was on [ketamine], so I could tell he had taken some." The witnesses told how he received a call the following day from Williams' manager asking if anyone had heard from the star. After telling Janine to let herself into Williams' home, he then got a call from her screaming: "He's in the bath, he's in the bath." Bobby immediately drove to the home and spoke to paramedics, who asked what Williams' drug of choice was. He added: "Him taking drugs didn't define him as a person. He did so much for the good. "I don't want the public to see him just as what has happened, with drug use, that wasn't the person that defined him. There was a lot more to him." Piccadilly Circus reopens after car overturns in crash
Roads in central London have reopened following a car crash at Piccadilly Circus on Sunday morning.A black BMW was badly damaged and flipped onto its roof, ending up next to the Criterion Theatre and the Shaftesbury Memorial Fountain, known as the Eros emergency services were called to the incident at about 05:30 BST and carried out investigations, although no arrests have been driver and passenger, both men aged 22, were taken to hospital, but their injuries have since been assessed as non-threatening. Piccadilly Circus and nearby routes remained closed throughout the remainder of the day, but cordons were lifted early on Monday, according to the Met pedestrians and no other vehicles were involved and investigations are ongoing, the force said.
