Celtic stars on fairway to heaven in Portugal after days of hard graft as very special visit awaits
Players would be hitting the town to let their hair down. There would be curfews stretched the limit, players climbing out windows to get back out and managers pacing the hotel corridors to all hours in the morning.
But footballers are a far better behaved lot these days.
Brendan Rodgers gave his Celtic players a few hours peace on Sunday after knocking their pan in for a fortnight and he didn't need to worry about them charging to the nearest boozer.
It was casual walks around Lisbon and some golf instead. There are a few course bandits in the Hoops dressing room.
Greg Taylor was the shark of this side but him leaving has left the door open for a few others to claim top spot.
The manager isn't too shabby on the links either. Rodgers is a member at the ultra swanky Loch Lomond but he joked the other day that his clubs are about to be stuck in the garage for about 10 months when the new campaign gets up and running and the games come thick as fast.
There's been plenty of hard graft done already but the squad could be in for another treat on Monday, with a planned trip to the famed Estadio Nacional planned.
There was no way Celts were going to spend the week training at the Portuguese Football Federation next door and not pop in to see the scene of the club's greatest ever triumph.
Rodgers might be hoping some of the magic of the place rubs off on his men for the new season.
He'll also be hoping the sun is out. The chat out here has been constant about the weather – and the fact it's been better at home than in Portugal.
In Saturday's bounce game with Estrela, it was actually five degrees cooler in Lisbon than it was in Millport.
It's sod's law, you wait all year for the summer to start and then it arrives when you are away.
At least it's more comfortable to train and play in, although Reo Hatate had been hoping for some rays as he rolled his eyes and laughed at the sight of clouds about.
There have been pre-seasons when players have looked like they were going to melt.
Last year in America was baking, and they had the fall out from the Donald Trump shooting sending folk wacky as well. The year before in Japan it was so humid players looked like they'd walked through a carwash even before kick off in their friendly games.
This is far more pleasant, but it's not going to last. The temperatures are rising down in the Algarve, where the Hoops will take on Sporting Lisbon on Wednesday night.
After some of the usual low key games designed to get players minutes, Rodgers is looking for something more like the real Celts this time.
The big hitters are back in the squad after a few holes on Sunday, it won't be long before they will come out swinging again.

Brendan Rodgers takes Celtic players on his ‘bucket list' trip to follow in footsteps of Lisbon Lions
Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) PERSPIRATION in the morning, inspiration in the afternoon. Brendan Rodgers put his Celtic players through a rigorous training session in the shadows of Lisbon's Estadio Nacional. Sign up for the Celtic newsletter Sign up 4 Brendan Rodgers leading his players out the tunnel 4 They followed in the footsteps of Celtic legends in Lisbon Then led his squad into the very arena where history was made. It's a pilgrimage thousands of supporters have journeyed in the years since May 25 1967. Yesterday the club's current squad had the same wide-eyed expression on their faces as they imagined what it must have been like for the legendary Billy McNeil to lift the European Cup. The players were taken to the dressing room where Jock Stein delivered a team-talk that made him immortal. They walked down the tunnel where Berti Auld sang the Celtic song as the team stood alongside the immaculate stars of Inter Milan. They climbed the stadium steps to reach on the very spot on the podium where Cesar held aloft the trophy in what's become one of the most iconic images in Scottish football. This is all part of Rodgers meticulous preseason preparations - especially as he plans for a massive Champions League play-off next month. It's why he booked a week at Portugal's City of Football camp with its historic backdrop. Rodgers said: 'That's what I said to the players. 'One, we're at a great facility here in Portugal. It's a national team base. Lisbon training camp latest as Hoops close in on sixth summer signing 'So I said 'we always want to give you the best to get the best from you.' 'But also not taking away the notion that you're training in the shadows of greatness here. 'Behind you, I said, that night changed the course and direction of this football club forever. 'So we will go and see it, because it's a huge part of our history. And we'll look forward to doing that. 'I've never had a visit. Is it on the bucket list? Absolutely. 'I know for many Celtic supporters that have visited, there's a real emotional feeling around it. 'For Scottish football, not just Celtic, it put the flag in for the country as well. So yes, it will be nice to go and feel the nostalgia.' 4 The old stadium looks identical to how it looked 48 years ago. It's like time has stood still in this leafy corner of Lisbon. The white seats Celtic supporters sat on remain intact. The dressing rooms, annexed to the main building, have the same wooden paneling. Stein told reporters afterwards, including SunSport legend Roger Baillie, who is also sadly no longer with us, 'We did this by playing football. Pure, beautiful, creative football.' And it's that message Rodgers believes is important even now as he urged his squad to take inspiration from the tour. He added: "Yes, well, it's why they come here to Celtic. 'The inspiration is there for them. 'They see the star when they come to the ground every other week. 'So yes, these guys have done incredible for this football club. 'It's what is part of the big attraction for these players to come - having that history in the Champions League, say for example, is really inspiring for them and obviously keeps them grounded, keeps them humble and keeps them focused on being the very best that they can be.' Sadly, of course, many of the Lisbon Lions have passed away in the years since 67. Just last week, John Clark was laid to rest. Rodgers added: 'I think it's life in general. 'If you think of Diogo Jota as well, what happened to him and his brother. 'People can sometimes think that these young guys are just invincible because they have superstar status. 4 'But I think it shows you that it's real life, what happened to him. 'And obviously for John, who had an amazing career and life, at 84 he leaves us with an incredible history and an incredible legacy. 'So for these guys, it's our job to continue that.' The young Scots coming through the ranks at Celtic can only be inspired by the story of the Lisbon Lions. It was fairytale stuff, what happened back in '67, and that should prove to them that anything is possible. Rodgers has brought a number of kids to this training camp in Portugal. And none of them have looked out of place. In particular, centre-back Colby Donovan, right-back Ben McPherson, 21, and midfielder Sean McArdle, 17, have shown real quality. Kyle Ure, 19, is another young prospect who looks like he's got a bright future ahead of him. Rodgers added: 'The likes of Colby I really like, I like his personality. 'I like his physicality and he's developing all the time. 'He's only 18 years of age but he's a good kid. 'He can learn and he's hungry to learn. So, yes, I've liked him. 'It's always a challenge because, like I said, for young players, do they need to get out and get the games or do you need to keep them close by? 'And sometimes the training with the top players will bring you on as well. 'But I think it's important that they get the minutes in the game. 'Like Sean, coming in to replace Callum for the last half-hour in the game on Saturday, he feels in that, because you need to play with a big personality. 'If you're going to play as a playmaker on our team, then you've got to come in and do that. 'So it was nice for him to get on there and feel that.'
