Oxfordshire district councils HQ might face further delays

BBC News27-02-2025
The leader of a district council has said plans for the local authority's new home may be set back due to local government reorganisation.South Oxfordshire District Council (SODC) wants to build a new complex opposite Didcot Parkway train station to use as its HQ with the Vale of White Horse District Council. Its former home was destroyed by fire in 2015 and staff have been using Abbey House in Abingdon since 2022.SODC leader David Rouane said it might have to pause any decision "until we have a clearer picture of our future".
The project has already experienced several delays and SODC has not said publicly what it expects the project to cost. Its last permanent office in Crowmarsh Gifford burned down after Andrew Main, from Rokemarsh, near Wallingford, drove a car filled with gas canisters into it.He was detained in a mental health unit in May 2015.Mr Rouane said it had been progressing plans for a potential permanent home at the Didcot Gateway. "However, in light of Local Government Reorganisation, we may now have to pause any decision until we have a clearer picture of our future," he said, referring to Oxfordshire County Council's cabinet unanimous support for the government's fast-track council restructure. The move would likely mean reducing the number of councils in the county to one or more unitary authorities.

49 Qatari aid trucks arrive in Egypt, Jordan en route to Gaza

DOHA, July 27 (Xinhua) -- A total of 49 Qatari aid trucks carrying humanitarian assistance arrived on Sunday in Egypt and Jordan as part of Qatar's continued support to the Palestinian people, the country's Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Sunday. The aid, provided by the Qatar Fund for Development in cooperation with Qatar Charity and Qatar Red Crescent, is being delivered to the World Food Programme (WFP) for distribution in the Gaza Strip via the Rafah and Kerem Shalom border crossings, according to the statement. The ministry stated that the shipment comprises 4,704 food parcels, 200 tons of food supplies, 174 tons of flour, and 5,000 units of infant formula. The ministry emphasized that the assistance comes amid catastrophic humanitarian conditions in the Gaza Strip due to the ongoing blockade. Local Palestinian sources confirmed that aid trucks began entering Gaza through the Kerem Shalom crossing on Sunday morning under the supervision of the Egyptian Red Crescent. On Sunday, Gaza's health authorities said in a brief statement that six new deaths due to starvation and malnutrition had been recorded in the past 24 hours, raising the total number of malnutrition-related mortality since October 2023 to 133, including 87 children.
