CF Chinook Centre hopes to set world record at Saturday pancake breakfast
CF Chinook Centre hopes to break the world record for most flapjacks served Saturday morning at its annual Stampede pancake breakfast.
More than 25,000 visitors are expected at the rain-or-shine, first-come, first-served event, which starts at 7 a.m. in the east parking lot between Chapters and Yeti.
There will be pancakes, sausage, juice and coffee for everyone, along with a Kiddie Corral and outdoor retail market.
There will also be live music featuring performances by Madeline Merlo, Tony Stevens, Nolan Compton and Hayley Isabel.
The event will be hosted by Jimmy and Jodi Hughes.
Friday at 4 p.m., Chinook Centre is hosting a pancake stacking contest featuring teams of notable Calgarians who will race to stack 65 pancakes. The winning team gets $2,000 to donate to the charity of their choice.
In 2023, the Calgary Stampede set a world record at Family Day, serving 17, 182 pancakes, which broke the old record by almost 3,000 flapjacks.

Local artist announced for Pelissier Street parking garage mural
The City of Windsor has chosen Windsor artist David Derkatz, also known as 'DERKZ', to create a mural across two main-level interior walls of the Pelissier Street parking garage. Derkatz is the chief executive officer of DERKZ Murals and Fine Art Inc., based out of Windsor. He specializes in large exterior murals, created with spray paint. 'Known for his unique style, DERKZ combines a fusion of graffiti and fine art with vivid and dynamic techniques,' the City of Windsor said in a news release. 'Alongside a range of imagery, he is particularly known for painting portraits using monochromatic values, mixed with striking and vibrant colour palettes.' The mural, called 'The Language of my World', will showcase Windsor as one of Canada's most multicultural communities, featuring people creating through performance arts. It will be about 117.3 feet high, costing a total of $55,000, funded through the city's Parking Garage Capital Rehabilitation Program. 'In Windsor, we are a mosaic of different ethnicities and cultures. Our citizens come from all over the world to make Canada their home, and everyone in Windsor brings unique skills and talents,' said Derkatz. 'My main goal for this specific mural was to highlight multiculturalism through performance and visual art. In this work, I depict individuals from diverse backgrounds, ages, and cultural heritages coming together as one. I wanted to express the connectivity of performance art through a wonderful symphony of song and dance that represents various cultures, languages, dances, instruments, and traditions.' The completed project will be revealed on Sept. 27. Windsor Symphony Orchestra will also be in the garage performing during the unveiling.
