1973: Ironworkers bolted the last girder into place, making Sears Tower (now Willis Tower) the world's tallest building. Sears Tower ended the Empire State Building's four-decade reign as the world's tallest and transformed the West Loop into a glittering office corridor.
The 1,451-foot Willis Tower lost its crown as the world's tallest when it was surpassed in 1996 by Malaysia's Petronas Towers, and the American title in 2013 when New York City's One World Trade Center was completed. After decades of construction in Asian countries, it's now the 25th tallest in the world.
1976: The Tribune won a Pulitzer Prize in special local reporting for two major investigations, one demonstrating the devastating effect of FHA loans on inner-city neighborhoods, the other exposing shoddy conditions and practices at several Chicago hospitals.
2009: The Chicago Cubs retired the No. 31 jersey worn by Hall of Fame pitchers Fergie Jenkins and Greg Maddux at Wrigley Field.
If Jenkins had his druthers, he'd have worn No. 30 when he joined the Cubs after a trade with Philadelphia in 1966.
'That was my number with the Phillies, but Yosh Kawano informed me that was Mr. Ken Holtzman's number,' Jenkins recalled. 'He offered me 31, and I said, 'Fine.''
Kawano, the colorful longtime potentate of the Cubs clubhouse, was still around when Maddux showed up 20 years later. Perhaps he knew something when he gave Maddux No. 31. 'They told me it was Fergie's number,' Maddux said. 'I thought, 'That's pretty cool.''
Jenkins was the fifth Cubs player to have a statue unveiled outside Wrigley Field.

He was drafted by the Chicago Cubs in 2014, made his major league debut the following June and helped the Cubs win the World Series in 2016. This season, the 32-year-old Schwarber ranks among the major league leaders with 37 home runs. He hit home runs on all three of his swings in the first All-Star Game swing-off to give the National League a victory over the American League. The three-time All-Star has 321 home runs and 738 RBIs in 11 seasons with the Cubs, Washington Nationals, Boston Red Sox and Phillies. Schwarber was the headliner of Indiana's seven-member Hall of Fame class. 49ers adding former All-American to their WR room
Through the first week of their 2025 training camp at the SAP Performance Facility in Santa Clara, California, the San Francisco 49ers are struggling to keep their wide receivers on the field. San Francisco's top wideout, Brandon Aiyuk, started camp on the PUP list after tearing his ACL in 2024. Ricky Pearsall started off on PUP, and while he's come off, he's been on and off the field as the team manages his hamstring injury. Jacob Cowing and Jauan Jennings are also dealing with injuries of their own that have kept them off the practice field. While the 49ers try to find players for quarterback Brock Purdy to throw to, they're adding another after a successful workout on Wednesday, as NFL insider Jordan Schultz reported that they're signing Andy Isabella. Isabella, 28, was a beast at UMass from 2015-18, catching 231 passes for 3,526 yards and 30 touchdowns in 45 games and earning Consensus All-American honors in his final season that saw him haul in 102 passes for 1,698 yards and 13 scores. The Arizona Cardinals selected Isabella in the second round (No. 62 overall) of the 2019 NFL draft, but he hasn't had the same success in the pros. Since the Cardinals waived him in the middle of his fourth season, he's had stints with the Baltimore Ravens, Buffalo Bills and Pittsburgh Steelers. In 43 NFL games, Isabella has recorded just 33 receptions for 447 yards and three touchdowns while also getting limited opportunities as both a punt and kick returner. With the 49ers not only expected to sign Isabella but running back Ameer Abdullah as well, they'll have to make two corresponding moves to open up spots on the their 90-man roster. At this point, San Francisco's wide receiver room includes Aiyuk (injured), Pearsall (injured), Jennings (injured), Cowing (injured, Jordan Watkins, Demarcus Robinson, Russell Gage, Isaiah Hodgins, Isaiah Neyor, Junior Bergen, Malik Knowles, Terique Owens and Equanimeous St. Brown.
