Rhian Wilkinson insists Wales not just at Euro 2025 to participate
Wales sit on the brink of a Euro 2025 exit having failed to pick up a point during their time in Switzerland so far, but Wilkinson was keen to impress just how remarkable an achievement it was for the side to even be at the tournament in the first place. But though she wants to accentuate the positives, the Wales manager was also far from rolling over for England as her side look to make an impact in their remaining game. 'I don't think many people inside women's football understand that we're here for the first time and we're here to make an impact,' said Wilkinson. 'Part of that is celebrating our firsts so we were able to celebrate Jess [Fishlock]'s goal twice thanks to VAR. All these moments are important to celebrate. 'Those countries that are fortunate enough to have the player pool to expect regularly to qualify for these events have forgotten what an achievement it is to be at the pinnacle of the game at these major events. 'These women have fought so hard for so long to have this opportunity and I will not allow us to feel like we're just here to participate, so we will continue to celebrate.' Wales fell to a 3-0 defeat in their opening Euro 2025 match against the Netherlands but grew into the tournament to get off to a strong start against a rotated France side. While France took an early lead, Fishlock's 13th-minute equaliser not only represented Wales' first-ever major tournament goal but also put them back on level terms with a side expected to go far at the Euros. Wilkinson's side could not hold out as they fell to 4-1 loss, but she hopes the side will take a key lesson from both games as they head into a crunch clash with England. '[I want them to play with] freedom and courage. We've talked about it all the time. I love watching this team when they start to find their flow,' she said. 'That's what we want to see another time. Our fan base has been incredible and we're so grateful for it so the very least that we can do is show up and give it everything we've got. 'They're on the journey with us and they understand they're here to celebrate something historic. We hope it's a win.' That win will be made all the more special if it comes over neighbours England. It is a rivalry embedded deep into the two side's footballing history. Though Wilkinson may be Canadian, a fierce contest with those in geographical proximity is something she understands well, though she has been keen not to let the players get ahead of themselves. 'I understand the grudge match with my neighbours [the USA],' she said. 'We're preparing like we do every game. I've not let them talk about this England game until we were finished at the French game. 'But equally, for me, this is another incredible challenge. I can't pretend there's not history there. I have read a book. 'For these women, it's acknowledging it and not letting it get bigger than it needs to be. 'This is going to be a wonderful opportunity for women's football and for two nations, neighbours, to put on a display for our families.'

Alex Greenwood: England's game against Wales is the most important yet
England's clash against Wales is England's most important game of their Euro 2025 campaign yet, according to Alex Greenwood. The meeting between the two home nations in St. Gallen is another must-win clash for the Lionesses, who currently sit on three points in Group D. They lost their opening game 2-1 to France before going on to get a necessary victory against the Netherlands on Wednesday to keep their hopes of a quarter-final spot alive. It sets up an enticing battle with neighbours Wales, and Greenwood needed no reminding of the magnitude of the occasion. "For me personally, it is the most important game we're going to play,' she said. "That's how I treat it. For the fans and everybody around there the rivalry is brilliant. The atmosphere is going to be great and something we should look forward to." The pressure of the big occasion could be enough to cause some teams to choke on the big stage, but when faced with such expectations against the Netherlands, England stepped up in style. A Lauren James brace in addition to goals from Ella Toone and Georgia Stanway saw the Lionesses fly to a resounding 4-0 win at Stadion Letzigrund in Zurich. For Greenwood, it is a pressure they have become well-acquainted with. "[Having a target on our back] is something we are used to now. That's the pressure we have invited because we have been successful and it is something we should be proud of,' she said. "As a team we don't focus too much on that. We focus on ourselves and the gameplan. "We enjoy pressure, but we also thrive in those moments. We showed that the other night against the Netherlands. "That was a high-pressure game and we performed under the highest pressure. Tomorrow becomes another high pressure game and we're all really looking forward to it." Part of England's success against the Netherlands came from Sarina Wiegman's tactical decision to move Greenwood out to left-back and bring Jess Carter, who struggled on the flank against France, into the centre-back role. With the threat of Chasity Grant down the right and Vivianne Miedema nullified it was a decision that paid dividends. But despite the seemingly major role change, Greenwood feels the tactical thought process is actually very similar. "[There are not as many differences] as you would think. In my role here at England as a left-back, Sarina still allows me to play to my ability,' she explained. "There are some slight differences tactically but I have been a left-back for a large parts of my career. "It is not foreign to play there. I enjoy playing there, it gives a different side to my game. "It is not overwhelming or too much to think about. It is gameplan, opposition, what's best for the team and that's the most important thing." In her versatility Greenwood has proven invaluable for the Lionesses for over a decade, featuring in their 2015 World Cup squad. It saw her rack up her 100th international appearance in the opening game against France to join an exclusive club. "Playing for England has always been a dream of mine. To then make 100 caps for my country is something I genuinely didn't think I would achieve,' she said. "I'm grateful to all the people who have helped me along the way."

Viktor Gyokeres speaks out as Mikel Arteta closes in on more Arsenal signings
Arsenal have been busy in this transfer window after adding three new players - with another one on his way in Noni Madueke - but Mikel Arteta is still waiting to bring in a new striker that he desperately needs Arsenal fans are anxiously waiting for more news on transfer targets after seeing the club do a number of deals - without delivering on the striker they crave so desperately. Mikel Arteta has snapped up three signings so far in this window - goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga and midfielders Martin Zubimendi and Christian Norgaard. Meanwhile, Chelsea winger Noni Madueke is on his way ahead of completing a medical over his £52million deal. But some Arsenal fans aren't happy with the business that's been done so far after a petition was launched against Madueke's signing, while there is frustration over the failure to get Viktor Gyokeres' signature over the line. Here, Mirror Football has rounded up the biggest Arsenal transfer news and gossip. Gyokeres speaks out Arsenal remain at a stalemate with Sporting Lisbon over Gyokeres and it's the transfer saga that seems like it will go on and on until deadline day. The Gunners will certainly be hoping to avoid that despite Sporting declaring a "cooling off period" in talks, having failed to reach a breakthrough. Arsenal have proposed a package of €65m (£56m) plus future payments of €5m and €10m (£8.6m) in add-ons, but a €5m (£4.3m) gap remains between the two clubs. Gyokeres is said to be furious with Sporting over their stubbornness and wants the situation resolves as soon as possible - with the player reportedly going on strike ahead of his expected return to pre-season training. He has now given an interview to French outlet L'Equipe discussing his future - as he admitted he would love to play in the Premier League after failing to cut the grade while turning out for Brighton at the start of his career. 'It's one of the biggest leagues in Europe. I spent several years there without being able to play a single match. So, of course, it's something I'd like to do. It would be great revenge!' When asked if he could quit Sporting, he replied: "Maybe. That's football, you never know. I don't think about it; we'll see what happens. If something happens, it will. The most important thing for me is to play for a club that really wants me." Maresca teases imminent Madueke announcement Arsenal fans know that one signing is just around the corner - even if many might not be too enthusiastic about it. Madueke is set to bolster Arsenal's numbers on the wing following the end of Raheem Sterling's loan spell and he will give Arteta further options alongside Bukayo Saka, Leandro Trossard, Ethan Nwaneri and Gabriel Martinelli. He will become the club's fourth signing of the summer and Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca has now spoken out about the deal happening for the first time, teasing Madueke was just "hours" away from becoming an Arsenal player. "Noni is in contact with a new club," the Italian said. "I guess that he's going to leave in the next hours. I said in one of the last press conferences that at the end, if players want to leave, at the end, it's difficult for the club and for the manager. Noni decided to leave, nobody told Noni he had to leave. If he is happy, we are happy." Gunners snap up son of ex-Champions League winner from Chelsea There's quite a bit of transfer business between Arsenal and Chelsea these days. Here is another Gunners deal for an ex-Blues star, but it's not a direct deal between the clubs. Arsenal have snapped up 17-year-old left-back Marcell Washington following a trial with the club last season. He last played for Chelsea and is actually the son of Ryan Bertrand, who won the Champions League with the Blues in 2012. Washington has now signed a professional deal with the Gunners after impressing across eight matches featuring for the Under-21s in the 2024-25 campaign. The teenager revealed how his father had been instrumental in guiding him through his career so far and said he was eager for him to become a "better version of him". 'I think it's been such an honour to have him take me through clips and walk me through games that I've played,' he said. He's really passionate about making me a better player and probably a better version of him. We might have a bit of an argument about it but you get it out of him "I think [Arsenal] is a really big club, obviously. The club are always striving to win trophies. I'm just looking to be an addition to that and see what I can offer the club."
