At the opening leg of the new China Table Tennis Super League (CTTSL) season, which concluded in Hebei on Wednesday, Fan won all seven of his men's singles ties, including beating world No 1 Lin Shidong 3-2.
A Weibo hashtag praising Fan – who does not have a world ranking – for beating the men's top player subsequently went viral.
'10 months without international appearances and six [months] without any matches, yet still could beat the world No 1, Fan is still the King,' one commentator said.
Another commentator said: 'No matches in 160 days, who knows how much effort he put in to maintain this level of competitiveness.'
Other comments included one saying 'The national team needed Fan' and 'It was a great loss for the table tennis world' to not have Fan playing in international competitions.

World Aquatics Championships: China's women claim relay bronze, Yu gets first medal
Swimming prodigy Yu Zidi has won her first medal at the World Aquatics Championships in Singapore, despite not swimming in the final of the women's 4x200metres freestyle relay on Thursday. Australia claimed gold in 7:39.35, with the USA second in 7:40.01. 'It feels quite emotional, it's a nice feeling,' Yu said of being selected for the relay team after the morning heats. Fiba Asia Cup: fans think China's men ‘all set up for failure' with Zhou Qi missing
Fans of the China men's basketball team should brace themselves for some bad results at the coming Fiba Asia Cup, with head coach Guo Shiqiang saying some of his best players were unavailable through injury. Zhou Qi was among those not listed in the initial 14-man roster for the tournament in Saudi Arabia, with the towering centre undergoing some untimely rehabilitation in the United States. Others missing from the squad included Zeng Fanbo, Zhang Zhenlin, Zhao Jiwei and Cui Yongxi, while Yang Hansen, who was selected by the Portland Trail Blazers at the NBA draft last month, has been given permission by the Chinese Basketball Association (CBA) to skip the tournament. 'We have too many injury problems with the national team – more than seven players will miss the Asian Cup,' Guo said. 'We have called up a lot of young players and don't have many post players at our disposal. 'The shortcomings in rotation have to be made up by the 12 of us. It's a team effort because that's what basketball is all about. 'Missing a lot of experienced players is going to be tough for us, but also a good opportunity for the young players. If a few of them emerge for us, it will be a good thing for the team.'
