Albanian court begins corruption trial against former Prime Minister Sali Berisha

TIRANA, Albania (AP) — An Albanian court on Monday started the trial on corruption charges of former Prime Minister Sali Berisha, who leads the opposition Democratic Party.
The trial for Berisha, 80, at the Special Court for Corruption and Organized Crime, which covers cases involving senior officials and politicians, also includes his son-in-law and three other people.
In October 2023, prosecutors put Berisha under investigation for allegedly abusing his post to help his son-in-law, Jamarber Malltezi, privatize public land to build 17 apartment buildings in the capital, Tirana.
In September 2024 Berisha was formally charged with corruption in connection with a property deal. He has denied the charges, describing them as political repression ordered by Prime Minister Edi Rama of the left-wing Socialist Party.
On Monday, Berisha reported to the prosecutor's office, as required every two weeks, but said he did not go to the court where he was represented by his lawyers.
'My presence or not is set from my lawyers and naturally in line with the laws,' he told journalists. 'That is a session where my lawyers will present their claims.'
Berisha was prime minister from 2005-2013 and served as president from 1992-1997. He was re-elected as a lawmaker for the center-right conservative Democratic Party in the 2024 parliamentary elections.
The United States government in May 2021 and the United Kingdom in July 2022 barred Berisha and close family members from entering their countries because of his alleged involvement in corruption.
Corruption remains a top issue that has continuously negatively affected Albania since the fall of the communist regime in 1990.
Beside Berisha, former President Ilir Meta and members of Berisha's opposition coalition have also been detained and investigated on corruption charges. Both say the charges are politically motivated, accusing the government of corruption.
In October last year, Tirana started full membership negotiations with Brussels on aligning with the European Union on the rule of law, the functioning of democratic institutions and the fight against corruption. Albania aims to join the bloc by 2030, according to Rama.

Which political party do Muslims identify more with? Poll reveals shifting views

Muslim Americans, who make up about 1% of the population, have long been a small, but dependable, voting bloc for the Democratic Party. Now, however, a political realignment may be underway, according to recent polling. Pew Research Center data published July 21 revealed that 53% of Muslim adults identify with or lean toward the Democratic Party. Meanwhile only a slightly smaller share, 42%, identify with or lean toward the Republican Party. The results come from the latest Religious Landscape Study — conducted between 2023 and 2024 — which surveyed 36,908 U.S. adults, including 273 Muslim respondents. The figures come in stark contrast to those from previous years, which were more favorable for Democrats, indicating the party's 'advantage has shrunk considerably.' In 2007, for example, 63% of Muslim adults identified with or gravitated toward the Democratic Party, while just 11% said the same for Republicans, according to a poll at the time. Similarly, in 2017, 66% of Muslim Americans favored the Democrats, while 13% favored the Republicans. What's causing this shift? Some observers have blamed former President Joe Biden's support for Israel's war in Gaza, seeing it as a key factor driving Muslims from the Democratic Party. Some previous polls support this theory. In an April 2024 Pew survey, 60% of Muslims said Biden was 'favoring the Israelis too much' in the conflict. And a July 2024 Institute for Social Policy Understanding (ISPU) survey found that the war in Gaza was the top concern for Muslim voters in three swing states. However, the latest poll also reveals that, in some cases, Muslim Americans' political values align more with Republicans than Democrats — potentially factoring into the realignment. For example, 63% of Muslim respondents said they believe children are better off when one parent stays home to take care of them. Sixty-six percent of Republicans and 45% of Democrats said the same. Similarly, 55% of Muslims said 'homosexuality should be discouraged by society,' while 47% of Republicans and 13% of Democrats agreed. On the other hand, there were cases in which Muslims' values aligned more with those of Democrats, according to the poll, which has a margin of error of 8.3 percentage points. Seventy-one percent of Muslim respondents said they preferred bigger government — a statement that 79% of Democrats and 31% of Republicans agreed with. And 82% of Muslims agreed that 'openness to immigrants is essential.' Meanwhile, 88% of Democrats and 50% of Republicans said the same.

Hunter's tone-deaf interview: Letters to the Editor — July 24, 2025

The Issue: Hunter Biden's comments on immigration, his father and other topics during a recent interview. Hunter Biden is a lowlife — everyone knows this ('Joe on Ambien for debate: Hunter,' July 22). Why, then, would any decent interviewer give this person a platform to spit out his vile thoughts? It is dangerous and exceedingly divisive. Thomas Birnbaum Manhattan Kira Davis is spot on in her takedown of former First Crackhead Son Hunter Biden, and his ironically and unintentionally truthful message that the Democratic Party is the party of elites ('The party of elitism,' July 22). Personally, I hope that Hunter keeps talking, so America can relax with some popcorn and hate-watch this moron and his vile and tone-deaf message. The Democratic Party embraces the 'peculiar institution' of uncontrolled illegal immigration, which creates working conditions tantamount to modern-day slavery. Imagine the poor elites having to wash their own dishes or work in their own gardens — unthinkable! Michael G. Brautigam Tallinn, Estonia Well now we know who should be on late-night TV: Here's Hunter! His recent interview was so funny, and that's what the late-night crowd wants — laughs. His show can include instructions on how to cook drugs and the munchies for after. Just think about the variety of interesting guests he would have to offer': Hillary Clinton, former President Barack Obama, former First Lady Michelle Obama, plus his mom and dad. The list is endless. I don't know about you, but I think it's a winner. Jean Cole Juno Beach, Fla. I have three words for baby Hunter Biden: 'Call your sponsor.' The humiliation of Astronomer CEO Andy Byron on the Coldplay concert kiss cam should be cast as a sterling example of the importance of practicing your poker face ('Kiss cam duo out in cold,' July 23). Had Byron and Chief People Officer Kristin Cabot just blandly smiled and waved, the kiss cam would have swung onwards in a moment and no one would have paid them any mind. It was only their panicked reaction and attempt to hide themselves that caught people's attention and led to their identification. Keeping it cool and maintaining your composure can carry you a long way through a crisis. Take some pertinent and lasting advice from Old Blighty — 'Keep calm and carry on!' Robert Frazer Lancashire, UK As a professor of business ethics, I think the immediate exits of both Byron and Cabot are critical for Astronomer. They've completely compromised themselves.
