Task cut out for India Women in series-decider after England rally

The Hindu3 days ago
Coming off a mediocre outing thanks to their injudicious shot selection in the testing conditions at Lord's, India will have their task cut out when they face a rejuvenated England in the series-deciding third Women's ODI here on Tuesday (July 22, 2025).
Visiting India produced a fine display with the bat to win the first match by four wickets but came a cropper in a rain-curtailed game in the British capital on Saturday (July 20, 2025) to leave the three-match series evenly poised at 1-1 heading into the final ODI.
The series holds significance for both teams as the World Cup is scheduled to start in two months' time. The marquee 50-over women's tournament kickstarts on September 30, with five cities across Sri Lanka and India playing host.
India came into the second game with their nose ahead and were expected to grab the series due to their all-round strength and form of some big players.
However, poor shot selection and an inability to adapt to the conditions spoiled their plans as they struggled to 143 for eight batting first in a 29-overs-a-side contest.
The bowlers, too, failed as England's top-order batters completed an easy chase with plenty of overs to spare.
Now, coming into the decider, India suddenly have a lot to ponder over.
Except for vice-captain Smriti Mandhana and Deepti Sharma, their batters were found wanting against the likes of Sophie Ecclestone, Em Arlott and Linsey Smith at Lord's and the bowling also failed to live up to the expectations.
With the accurate Ecclestone leading the way, the India batters struggled against the spinners especially, and they will certainly hope for a much better outing against the slow bowlers at Chester-le-Street.
India bat long but for the visitors to win the game and the series, they will need at least a couple of players from among Mandhana, skipper Harmanpreet Kaur, Jemimah Rodrigues, Pratika Rawal, and Harleen Deol to play big knocks with Richa Ghosh and Deepti providing them support lower down the order.
The team will be looking for early breakthroughs from the pacers before the spinners get into the act.
As far as England are concerned, they are in a much better space then they were after the series-opener and the likes of Ecclestone and Arlott would look to do an encore with the ball.
The batters such as Amy Jones and Tammy Beaumont with captain Nat Sciver Brunt would also be wanting to contribute handsomely to the team's cause.
Adding some spice would a hint of tension that was visible in the second game.
The Harmanpreet-led side had appealed for obstruction of the field by Tammy Beaumont after Jemimah threw the ball at the striker's end.
The Indians believed that the batter deliberately blocked the throw, but the third umpire concluded that it was not out after taking a good look at the replays causing a fair bit of disappointment in the visiting camp.
Teams (from): India: Harmanpreet Kaur (c), Smriti Mandhana (vc), Pratika Rawal, Harleen Deol, Jemimah Rodrigues, Richa Ghosh (wk), Yastika Bhatia (wk), Tejal Hasabnis, Deepti Sharma, Sneh Rana, Sree Charani, Shuchi Upadhyay, Amanjot Kaur, Arundhati Reddy, Kranti Gaud, Sayali Satghare.
England squad: Nat Sciver-Brunt (c), Em Arlott, Tammy Beaumont, Lauren Bell, Maia Bouchier, Alice Capsey, Kate Cross, Alice Davidson-Richards, Charlie Dean, Sophia Dunkley, Sophie Ecclestone, Lauren Filer, Amy Jones, Emma Lamb, Linsey Smith.
Match starts at 5:30 p.m. IST.

Barcelona legend Xavi rejected by AIFF technical committee due to high cost: Report

Barcelona and Spain legend Xavi was among the coaches who applied for the Indian men's football team head coach position, according to a report. However, his name was not considered by the AIFF. read more The possibility of Xavi being very costly forced AIFF to cancel his candidature. Image: Reuters Barcelona great Xavi was among the applicants for the head coach position of the Indian men's football team, it has been revealed. However, the name of the former Spanish World Cup winner was not selected by the All India Football Federation (AIFF) technical committee, as it was deemed that his services would be unaffordable. The AIFF technical committee has from a long list of 170 candidates on Wednesday to replace former Bule Tigers coach Manolo Marquez, who left his job after defeat to Hong Kong in June. The names of Jamshedpur FC coach Khalid Jamil, former India coach Stephen Constantine and Stefan Tarkovic, who coached the Slovakia national team in the past, will now be forwarded to the AIFF Executive Committee, which will pick the coach for the Indian men's football team. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Xavi rejected by AIFF due to high cost The technical committee did not entertain many prominent names, including that of former Liverpool legends Robbie Fowler and Harry Kewell and former Blackburn Rovers manager Steve Kean, among others. Now, a major revelation has been made that former Barcelona player and coach Xavi had also applied for the job. This was confirmed to The Times of India by AIFF's national team director Subrata Paul. 'It's correct that Xavi's name was there,' Paul told TOI. 'The application was emailed to the AIFF.' As per the report, the AIFF technical committee did not consider Xavi's name due to the possibility of a high cost that his appointment may lead to. More from Football 'Even if Xavi was genuinely interested in Indian football and could be convinced to take up the job, we would need a lot of money,' a member of the technical committee told TOI. It's well known that Xavi occasionally follows the Indian Super League (ISL), something that he disclosed a while back in an interview with The Athletic. 'I sometimes (follow) the Indian League because many Spanish coaches are there,' he said. As a player, Xavi won eight La Liga titles and four Champions League trophies. He also won two European Championships with Spain, besides winning the 2010 World Cup.

Xavi Hernandez As Indian Men's Football Team Coach? AIFF Left Stunned: Report

Last Updated: AIFF surprised by Xavi Hernandez's application for Indian men's team coach. The All India Football Federation was taken aback after they spotted an unusual and unexpected name among the 170-odd applicants for the position of the Indian men's team coach. Even as Liverpool legend Robbie Fowler was the star attraction, now it was time for Spanish football coach Xavi Hernandez, according to a report in The Times of India. Besides Fowler and Hernandez, there were the familiar names like former coach Stephen Constantine, Steve Kean, Khalid Jamil, Kibu Vicuna and Eelco Schattorie, whose work is known in India. Marked in green, Xavi, someone who made over 700 appearances for Barcelona, was shown to have sent the application from his own email ID. 'It's correct that Xavi's name was there. The application was emailed to the AIFF," national team director Subrata Paul told The Times of India. According to the report, the technical committee didn't consider Xavi for the final shortlist because of the high financial cost. As footballer, he enjoyed a brilliant career, winning the World Cup in 2010 and two Euros. 'Even if Xavi was genuinely interested in Indian football and could be convinced to take up the job, we would need a lot of money," a member of the technical committee was quoted as saying. The technical committee has recommended three names to the AIFF executive committee to replace Manolo Marquez, who quit earlier this month. The shortlist was finalised by the technical committee chaired by former India skipper IM Vijayan. Xavi was head coach at Al Sadd before taking over at Barcelona four years back and a return to Qatar appears to be on the cards. As per local newspaper Al Raya, Xavi is negotiating a possible incorporation as the national team's next coach. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. 'Joe Root Will Be Cursed!': Bold Prediction As Stunning Stat Claims England Star Will Surpass Sachin Tendulkar

Joe Root is inching closer to becoming Test cricket's leading run-getter and it's being predicted that nobody will be able to challenge his legacy. Joe Root has been predicted to become Test cricket's all-time leading run-getter and judging from the current trend, it has been claimed that his legacy will remain unchallenged. India legend Sachin Tendulkar currently holds the record for having scored the most runs in Test cricket history with 15,921 runs from 200 games. Root, who is 34, has taken his tally to 13270 and should he manage to maintain his current form and level of fitness, can even surpass Tendulkar. Root, a former England captain, is right now fifth on the list with Rahul Dravid (13,288), Jacques Kallis (13,289), and Ricky Ponting (13,378) ahead of him. Former India head coach Ravi Shastri feels that Root has four year of cricket ahead of him and will have accumulated 19,000 Test runs by the time he retires. 'Look at his (Root) age," Shastri said while commentating for Sky Sports during the second day of the 4th Test between India and England currently underway in Manchester. 'Look at the number of matches. He's played 157 (Tests). So you would imagine he would go past three (players) ahead of him in almost three Test matches." 'And then he's got about 40 Test matches. Sachin has played 200 Tests. Root has played 160 (157). He's still young. He has four years of cricket ahead of him. And what will separate him and Tendulkar will be around 3,000 runs. When you're hot, you're hot. In the meantime, he has age on his side," he added. Former England captain Michael Atherton, who was also on air, joined the conversation revealing that Sky Sports statistician Benedict Bermange has informed him that Root has 60.28% chance of breaking Tendulkar's record. 'Benedict reliably informed me that he's got a 60.28% chance of beating Sachin Tendulkar. I don't know how he worked that out," Atherton said. Shastri chimed in. 'I tell you that it won't be music to the ears of the Indians. It's just coming about to bedtime in India, and you've given us a stat – 60.28," he quipped. 'He'll be cursed. Millions of homes around Mumbai right now," added Atherton. Root's Legacy Will Be Unchallenged Atherton then made a bold prediction: If and once Root breaks the record, it's unlikely that anyone will surpass that since the interest in Test cricket continues to diminish. 'Wherever Joe Root finishes, say, for example, he went past Sachin. I'm not so sure anybody will go past that just because of the nature of the way the game is going. People will play fewer Test matches, I would imagine, in the years to come," Atherton said. Shastri agreed and said it will act as a fuel. '…that's what's going to drive him. He knows that. He will know that more than anybody else. The way the game is going, the three formats of the game," Shastri said. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
