Chandigarh: To honour the legacy of Punjab's eminent personalities, the AAP govt has renamed 115 govt schools after freedom fighters, martyrs, and internationally acclaimed athletes, said Harjot Singh Bains, minister for school education, on Monday.
The school education department renamed 25 schools after freedom fighters and martyrs on July 18, said Bains. Chief minister Bhagwant Mann on Sunday announced that a school in Beas village in Jalandhar district would be renamed after marathoner Fauja Singh, the minister said.
Addressing a press conference, Bains said Punjab govt had also decided to display pictures and histories of these personalities in schools named after them to inspire students with their sacrifices and contributions while appropriately honouring their legacy.
These 115 schools have been rechristened to honour Ghadar Movement heroes, freedom fighters, martyrs, and eminent personalities of Punjab. "Renaming schools will inspire students through the stories and sacrifices of these individuals," Bains said.
He highlighted the AAP govt in 2023 renamed Govt High School in Khatkar Kalan as Shaheed-e-Azam Sardar Bhagat Singh Govt High School. In response to a media query on the 'Yudh Nashian Virudh' campaign, Bains said the school education department, along with subject matter experts, was making a curriculum to sensitise students against the ill effects of drugs. It will lay a strong foundation against the drug menace, he added.

Operation Mahadev exposes ISI backed Lashkar-e-Taiba plot behind Pahalgam massacre

The role of the Pakistan Army in the Pahalgam terror attack that claimed 26 lives became clearer when the Indian security forces gunned down Sulaiman, considered to be the mastermind. Suleman, who is part of the Lashkar-e-Taiba, which carried out the April 22 attack, also goes by the name Hashim Moosa. He was an ex-Pakistani army official who was killed during Operation Mahadev, carried out by the CRPF and Jammu and Kashmir Police. During the operation, two other terrorists, Abu Hamza and Yasir, too, were eliminated by the security forces. "Three terrorists have been neutralised in an intense firefight. Operation Continues," the official X handle of the Indian Army's Chinar Corps said. The killing of Sulaiman further cements the fact that the ISI had played a major role in the Pahalgam attack. Suleman was a highly trained terrorist and an asset of the ISI. He was roped in to oversee the attack due to his expertise and the time he had spent in the Pakistan Army. The probe into the Pahalgam attack showed that it was the ISI and Lashkar-e-Taiba that carried out this attack. It was a guarded conspiracy, and the planners decided to hire only Pakistani terrorists as they wanted it to be a top secret. While at first the role of some locals did come up, the probe found that while some had offered shelter and food, they had no clue about the attack. In the run-up to the planning, the ISI had roped in Sajid Jutt to deploy only Pakistani fighters to carry out the attack. Only a handful of people were involved in this attack. Jutt was told to identify Pakistani Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorists who were fighting in the Valley to carry out the attack, and at any cost, not involve any locals, as they did not want the details to come out. The attack squad was led by Sulaiman, who was part of the Pakistan army's special forces commando squad. He has been in the Valley since 2022 after having trained at the Muridke camp of the Lashkar-e-Taiba. It may be recalled that in the aftermath of the Pahalgam attack, India had carried out Operation Sindoor during which Muridke, the primary training facility of the Lashkar-e-Taiba, had been hit. Investigations showed that Sulaiman was at the Tral forest on April 15. This means that he was close to the attack site at Baisaran nearly seven days before the strike. Sulaiman, according to the investigating agencies, was also involved in the April 2023 attack on an army truck in Poonch in which five soldiers were killed. The role of the locals had cropped up after the arrest of Parvaiz Ahmad Jothar from Batkote, Pahalgam, and Bashir Ahmad Jothar from Hill Park, Pahalgam. However, the probe learnt that they had a limited role. They only provided shelter, food, and some logistics for a few thousand rupees. During their questioning, they said that they had no clue about the attack and where it was taking place. They also said that they were not told about the plan by the terrorists. This suggests that the ISI and Lashkar-e-Taiba wanted to maintain utmost secrecy and planned the entire strike on a need-to-know basis. The Pahalgam attack was clearly aimed at creating a huge communal divide and also to stop the thriving tourism industry in Jammu and Kashmir after the abrogation of Article 370.

Pakistan: 3 TTP militants killed in Karachi; one masterminded attack on Chinese nationals in 2024

Representative image. Three Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) militants were killed in an encounter with Pakistani security forces in Karachi, officials confirmed on Monday. Among those killed was Zafran, who was identified as the mastermind of a November 2024 attack on two Chinese engineers in Pakistan's largest city. He carried a bounty of Rs 20 million. The operation was conducted late Sunday night in the Manghopir area by the Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) and intelligence agencies, CTD official Raja Umer Khattab told Dawn . The TTP men opened fire when they saw security personnel approaching, triggering a firefight which lasted over an hour. Authorities recovered a suicide jacket, three grenades, a Kalashnikov rifle, two pistols, and a large quantity of ammunition from the site. On November 5 last year, a private security guard opened fire on two Chinese nationals at a textile mill in Karachi, injuring both before fleeing. Pakistan has witnessed a sharp increase in militant attacks—particularly in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan—since the TTP ended its ceasefire with the federal government in late 2022. Founded in 2007, the TTP is an umbrella organisation of various extremist groups seeking to impose a strict version of Islamic law across Pakistan. It has claimed responsibility for numerous high-profile attacks, including the 2008 Marriott Hotel bombing in Islamabad, the 2009 assault on army headquarters, and multiple strikes on security installations.

The terrorists killed 26 civilians after segregating them on the basis of their religion. Not just the place, the timing of Operation Mahadev is coincidental too. It comes just weeks before Sawan Purnimashi, the full moon in the holy month, when, as historians note, Kashmiri Pandits used to undertake their annual pilgrimage to the sacred peak in reverence to Lord Lashkar-e-Taiba commander Suleiman Shah, alias Musa Fauji, the mastermind and executor of the attack was among the three Pahalgam attackers killed by security forces in an Peak is a sacred site that finds mentions in ancient scriptures and Kashmiri folklore. On Sawan Purnimashi, the Pundits make a pilgrimage to this site," according to Kashmiri historian Peer Hassan MAHADEV TO NEUTRALISE PAHALGAM ATTACKERSTitled 'Operation Mahadev', the joint anti-terror drive was launched by the Army, Jammu and Kashmir Police, and the CRPF in Srinagar's Lidwas area, a region right under the shadow of Mount Mahadev or the Mahadev sources confirmed that the terrorists were foreign nationals affiliated with the Pakistan-based group, The Resistance Front (TRF), a Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) to officials, the gunfight began after intelligence inputs pointed to the movement of armed terrorists in the Lidwas area.A cordon was quickly set up, and the area combed. A brief, but intense exchange of fire ensued, following which all three suspects were gunned location and timing of this encounter have not gone unnoticed, for the site of the killing of the terrorists is not just a mountaintop, but a living embodiment of divine memory for the Kashmiri Hindu PEAK IS CALLED 'THE PEAK OF SRINAGAR'Mahadev Peak, rising over 13,000 feet (3,962 metres) above sea level, is no ordinary mountain in the eyes of the devout Pandit community of the Kashmir Valley, who used go on annual pilgrimage treks to the Mahadev Peak, part of the Zabarwan Range in Srinagar District, stands as a symbol of spiritual significance in Kashmir. The Mahadev Peak is considered one such stop in Shiva's HILLS: FROM NILMATA PURANA TO RAJATARANGINIMount Mahadev attracted hundreds of Pandits every year during the Sawan Purnima pilgrimage. However, the mass pilgrimage to the holy hills stopped as terrorism and militancy hit the Mahadev Peak is a symbol of Kashmiri culture, the memory of which cannot be erased by terrorism or peak stands as a living legend for the Kashmiri Pandit trek to the Mahadev peak begins from Faqir Gujri, passing through places still bearing their ancient names — Dwara (Dara), Rudrawas (Lidvas), according to a report in the Jammu-based Daily scriptures from the Nilamata Purana to Kalhana's Rajatarangini from the 12th century, speak of the Mahadevagiri as a pilgrimage and a holy Nilamata Purana, also known as the Kasmira Mahatmya, states: "One is honoured in the world of Rudra by seeing the mountain Mahadeva after having a plunge into the Mahuri in front of Tripuresa."The Nilamata Purana, which documented Kashmir between the 4th and 8th centuries, affirms the peak's location and divine stature, noting: "Mahadevagiri is the westernmost peak of the highest ridge of the mass of mountains lying between the Sind valley and the eastern range of mountains".Kalhana's Rajatarangini, written in the 12th century, describes the grandeur of the region's geography and locates Mahadev Peak with reverence, noting, "The whole mountain-ridge which stretches to the south of Triphar and along the Dal, bore in ancient times the name of Sridvara.
