James Gunn Reveals Superman's Forgotten Power to Hide His Secret Identity

director recently unveiled details about the Hypno glasses that Clark Kent wears to hide his secret identity. Kent's disguise to conceal his Superman persona is one of the most popular covers used by a superhero among comic book fans. Superman, which features David Corenswet as the Man of Steel, sees the actor integrating the glasses perfectly into his Clark Kent persona, as shown in the movie's trailers.
The Suicide Squad director recently talked about the hypno glasses, which Superman uses to conceal his secret identity.
James Gunn revealed to Comicbook.com that he forgot about the glasses possessing a power. He was reminded of the same by comic book writer Tom King. Moreover, the hypno glasses, which allow Clark Kent to appear different from Superman, are also canon in the comics.
The DC Studios co-CEO said, 'It's kind of been forgotten, but that's from the comics. I was sitting with Tom King, the comic book writer, and I was like, 'you know the thing that I just don't really know how to reconcile in myself is the glasses because the glasses always bothered me as a kid.' They bothered me because I just don't have that much suspension of disbelief to believe that. But he said, 'You know, there's an answer for that in the comics, it's canon that they hypnotize people.''
Additionally, Gunn asserted that David Corenswet 'looks the most different as Clark Kent to Superman, even more so than Chris Reeve.'
The description of the hypno glasses was given to comic book fans in 1978 in Superman (Vol. 1) #330. Apart from this, in the trailer, fans have also seen Clark Kent alter his voice and persona according to Superman. He does so when he gets interviewed by Lois Lane (Rachel Brosnahan).

James Gunn Explains Why Superman Bleeds in the New DCU Movie — GeekTyrant

In a recent interview with ScreenRant, James Gunn opened up about Superman and how his version of the Man of Steel is not invincible in the ways we've come to expect. When asked whether he planned to depict a more emotionally and physically vulnerable Superman, Gunn replied: 'Yes. It is, both to some degree.' While the trailers and promotional materials have already teased a bleeding Superman, it's not just about showing that he can get roughed up. Gunn emphasized that the story will explore Clark Kent's inner life just as much as his outer strength: "Emotionally, for sure, simply because we're invited into Superman's personal life. This is about his interior life. At the core of the story – it's surrounded by pyrotechnics and flying dogs and robots – but at the core of the story it's about a person who thinks of himself in a certain way, finds out that isn't true, and has to recontextualize who he is in the face of that." This isn't your standard 'truth, justice, and save the cat out of a tree' Superman. Gunn said: "That isn't really what your normal Superman story is, nor any hero's story, for the most part. So I think that's a difference. He's more vulnerable in that way. 'And then physically – I mean, listen, he's fighting an equal and opposite force. So, in some ways, it's no different than when Superman was fighting the bad guys in Superman II, in Donner's film." But don't mistake 'vulnerable' for weak. Gunn points out that Superman will still go up against some serious power, what he calls an 'equal and opposite force,' which naturally draws comparisons to Superman II and its Kryptonian face-off. Except this time, there's no turning back the clock. "But we do see him bleed, which is different. He can't make the world go backwards in time through spinning around it. So I kind of took a Superman that was a mix of different Supermans throughout the comics in terms of his power set," So, this Superman has limits, and that makes him more human, and maybe even more heroic. Superman is 'set in a world very different from ours and far removed from the DCEU. Heroes have been around for ages, and we'll see how it affected this world's history and has shaped the DCU." David Corenswet takes on the iconic role, and he's joined by Nicholas Hoult as Lex, and Rachel Brosnahan as Lois, Skyler Gisondo as Clark's best pal, Jimmy Olsen; Wendell Pierce as The Daily Planet's Perry White; Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El, aka Supergirl; Isabela Merced as Kendra Saunders, aka Hawkgirl; and Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner. It also stars Sean Gunn as Maxwell Lord; Edi Gathegi as Michael Holt, aka Mister Terrific; Maria Gabriela de Faria as Angela Spica, aka The Engineer; Sara Sampan as Eve Teschmacher; Anthony Carrigan as Rex Mason, aka Metamorphosis; Frank Grillo as Rick Flag Sr.; Neva Howell as Martha Kent; and Pruitt Taylor Vince as Jonathan Kent. Superman flies into theaters on July 11, 2025.

'Superman' Post-Credits Scene Rumored To Have Been Revealed

We're less than a few weeks away from the release of James Gunn's Superman in theaters. Fans are eager to see how the iconic superhero will be reinvented and whether or not the studio's plans for the DC Universe will succeed. On that note, the post-credits scene for Superman has been rumored to have been revealed online. The use of post-credits scenes for superhero movies has become a norm. It allows franchises to continue setting up new projects and get fans excited for what's to come. Naturally, fans are eager to know if Superman will follow that trend, and if so how it will set up the larger DC Universe as a result, since this is the first film of the new franchise. According to insider @MyTimeToShineH, however, it looks like Superman could be taking a different direction regarding its own use of post-credits scenes. While the following information should be taken with a grain of salt, here's what they had to share: 'Superman has two post credits scenes, one is Superman with Krypto on the moon looking at the Earth,' the insider claims, referencing a scene that has been shown in promotional materials for the film. The insider also alleges that there's a second post-credits scene as well, though it's played more for laughs than anything else: 'The second is Superman and Mister Terrific looking at a giant crack in a massive building because the ground split in half during the finale and Supes says it's crooked and Terrific gets all annoyed and walks away and kicks a rock. It's a funny scene.' Obviously some fans would have enjoyed seeing a tease for the next DCU project. However, James Gunn is clearly taking a different route when compared to franchises like the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While these post-credits scenes have yet to be confirmed, he has previously stated that the DCU movies will be more stand-alone while building a bigger world, and it looks like these scenes could fit with that statement. James Gunn's Superman will hit theaters on July 11, 2025. Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional updates regarding the highly-anticipated DCU blockbuster as we have them.
