Evans reclaims WRC lead after Rovanpera's record

BBC News2 days ago
Elfyn Evans has reclaimed the World Rally Championship (WRC) lead by finishing fourth at Rally Finland where home hero Kalle Rovanpera triumphed. The Welshman could not keep up with Rovanpera's record-breaking pace, but was one of the Toyota drivers who completed the first all-top-five for a manufacturer since Lancia's did so at Rally de Portugal in 1990.Rovanpera's average speed of 129.95kph over the four days was the fastest in WRC history as he won by 39.2seconds after leading from Friday morning.Hyundai's Thierry Neuville and Adrien Fourmaux were scuppered by tyre problems on Saturday to take the pressure off 24-year-old Rovanpera. And while Evans can celebrate returning to the top of the standings, Rovanpera is now lying three points behind in second.A mere 6.6secs separated Japan's Takamoto Katsuta, Frenchman Sebastien Ogier and Evans at the finish as they came in second, third and fourth respectively with Finn Sami Pajari completing the Toyota top five.
McErlean matches best effort
Estonia's Ott Tanak finished 10th as he dropped to fourth in the title race while conceding top spot to Evans, who had been knocked off top spot by the 2019 champion at Rally Estonia in July.Motorsport Ireland Rally Academy driver Josh McErlean matched his best WRC result in Finland. It was a strong performance by the 26-year-old from Northern Ireland, who blended flashes of speed with consistency, as McErlean and co-driver Eoin Treacy were the best-ranked M-Sport Ford driver."It's such a special place to equal our best result for the season," said McErlean, who is his first season in the WRC."It's the most incredible rally, the most incredible speeds and most incredible experience".It was a strong weekend for Northern Irish and Irish crews, as Aaron Johnston navigated Katsuta to second. In the Junior WRC, Donegal's Eamonn Kelly and co-driver Conor Mohan claimed their first victory of the season ahead of championship leader Taylor Gill.

New hot Nissans are on the way with the help of Formula E

Nissan is considering using its Formula E team to develop prototype versions of hot EVs that could be used to help create future Nismo performance models. Tommaso Volpe, Nissan's Formula E team boss, told Autocar there are internal talks about how the Paris-based squad can aid the Nismo division in the development of future road-going electric performance cars. The Japanese firm currently offers a warmed-up Nismo-badged version of the Ariya electric SUV, but company boss Ivan Espinosa previously told Autocar the firm had 'exciting plans' for future sports cars, suggesting he wanted four or five halo models to top the line-up. While he stressed plans had not been agreed yet, Volpe said a proposal was under consideration for the squad to develop 'some prototypes based on normal chassis that can help the Nismo division to enhance the performance of electric cars'. He added: 'We have the Ariya Nismo now, which has no influence from Formula E, but we are considering a collaboration for future models. We could do a prototype version, then they could use that as a base to develop future products.' Any future test mule is likely to be based around the twin-motor all-wheel-drive running gear of a Formula E racer and would be focused on helping Nismo learn about optimising the efficiency of electric performance cars and refining traction management with all-wheel-drive powertrains. Notably, Formula E will introduce a new Gen4 technical package for the 2026/27 season. The regulations are set to feature powertrains with permanent all-wheel drive using a pair of motors to produce around 800bhp – up from the 469bhp of the current cars. Volpe said the technology transfer in Formula E to date has generally gone from road car to race car, citing lines of Leaf software code used in the programming of the race car powertrain. But he added that would switch with the new machines. 'The development of the Gen4 cars will be when potential transfers will come from the racing cars to future [road] products, because the level of performance and efficiency will be pushed even more to the limit,' said Volpe. 'Also, they will be all-wheel-drive. With the Ariya we have strong expertise of all-wheel-drive electric powertrains and controlling the grip on four wheels independently. There is a huge possibility of transfer with our future products. 'The regulations of Gen4 have been written in an open conversation with manufacturers, and one of the reasons all-wheel drive is there is because of a strong push by Nissan and some other manufacturers, because all-wheel drive is the trend for the core business in the future.'

Mazda forecasts nearly $1 billion profit hit from U.S. tariffs

TOKYO, Aug 5 (Reuters) - Mazda Motor (7261.T), opens new tab said on Tuesday it expects a 145.2 billion yen ($987.02 million) hit to its operating profit this business year due to U.S. import tariffs, as the Japanese automaker rolled out measures to cushion the impact. To soften the blow of the tariffs, the company said it is taking measures including changing shipping routes, increasing output at its plant in the U.S. state of Alabama and adjusting production volumes. The impact of the higher U.S. duties on results this year remained "quite significant," assuming that exports from Japan would face a 15% tariff and those from Mexico 25%, Chief Financial Officer Jeffrey Guyton said. Without its countermeasures, the company would be at risk of a 233.5-billion-yen operating profit hit for the year ending March 2026, Guyton told reporters during a briefing. Mazda has been trying to boost sales of its CX-50 crossover sport utility vehicle. The company has a major plant in the Mexican state of Guanajuato from where it exports vehicles to the U.S. It said last week it sold about 210,000 vehicles in the United States over the first half, up 4% from a year earlier. Mazda has forecast a full-year operating profit of ¥50 billion for the year ending March 2026, down sharply from the previous financial year. It had previously withheld guidance due to uncertainty surrounding the U.S. tariffs. ($1 = 147.1100 yen)

Trio of Hundred teams will adopt Indian names

Indian investors in the Hundred are set to rename their teams to align with IPL brands, and a move to the T20 format is possible from 2029. On Wednesday the England and Wales Cricket Board announced that six of the eight deals to buy Hundred franchises had been completed, with Oval Invincibles and Trent Rockets still outstanding. The investors in those two teams – the Ambani family (Mumbai Indians) and Cain International (which is fronted by the Chelsea owner Todd Boehly) respectively – effectively have a deadline of October 1 to complete the deals as they take operational control of the teams on that date. The funds from the other six deals are in, and will be spread across the 18 counties, who stand to take at least £18m each. The first raft of payments – an 'unfettered' £400,000 – will land in county accounts on Thursday. In all, each of the 11 non-host counties stand to receive just over £24m from the sale of 49 per cent of the eight teams. The money is subject to ECB 'guardrails' with counties required to prove to the governing body what they will use it for. The priorities are paying down debt, investing in infrastructure and building cash reserves. The host counties will take around £18m, plus whatever they sold of their own share. In the case of Yorkshire – who sold all of their 51 per cent share of Northern Superchargers to the owners of Sunrisers Hyderabad, the Indian Premier League team – this figure will be north of £50m, allowing them to pay off a considerable debt to their chairman Colin Graves. 'The deal puts the club in a strong financial position, which has been far from the case for many years here, and we can start looking towards a very bright future,' said Sanjay Patel, Yorkshire's chief executive. 'The first priority is clearing our debts. We will then be looking at how we can invest the surplus funds to not only safeguard the future, but enable us to flourish.' Tournament could switch to T20 in 2029 The ECB chief executive, Richard Gould, and the managing director of the Hundred, Vikram Bannerjee, who has overseen the sales process, said they expected three of the teams to change their names ahead of the 2026 season. The three are all owned by Indian Premier League teams looking to align their new purchases with their wider brand. Manchester Originals are likely to become Manchester Super Giants, Northern Superchargers are likely to incorporate Sunrisers into their name, while the Ambani family will be keen to introduce an element of the Mumbai Indians brand (probably the initials MI) to Oval Invincibles. Also up for debate in four years' time will be the format of the tournament, with a switch to T20 possible from 2029, when the next broadcast cycle comes in. 'That's one of the things that will be discussed,' said Bannerjee. 'It works elsewhere but in this country the format has provided us with some really interesting things, especially from a broadcast perspective. 'I'm sure it will be discussed, at the moment it's the Hundred format and that will remain for now, but let's see where we get to in the long term.' Gould also confirmed that England would only play men's or women's international cricket during the Hundred as a 'last resort' to ensure better player availability. 'We want the clearest window possible,' he said.
