Real Madrid continuing to monitor Arsenal star

Yahoo4 days ago
The brass at La Liga giants Real Madrid are continuing to keep a close eye on the situation of a leading member of the defensive ranks at Arsenal.
That's according to French outlet , who point towards William Saliba as the player in question.
It is common knowledge across Spain at this point that Real Madrid are on the lookout for reinforcements at centre-back moving forward.
Owing to the long-term fitness struggles of David Alaba, Los Blancos are expected to bring in a new stopper either this summer or next.
To date, a whole host of players have in turn been tipped to take their talents to Spain's capital.
Considered the most intriguing in the eyes of many, though, is the aforementioned William Saliba.
Real Madrid have long been credited with a keen interest in the Arsenal stalwart, widely regarded as one of the standout defenders in world football.
All of a Blancos persuasion will therefore no doubt be delighted to hear that their side's board are continuing to closely monitor Saliba's situation in north London.
With the France international yet to sign a contract extension despite ongoing talks between the parties, the Spanish heavyweights are lying in wait, ready to pounce at the first sign of Saliba wanting out.

Michigan in 'ongoing discussions' to play 2026 home game vs. Western Michigan in Frankfurt, Germany

Could Michigan play its first international game in program history in 2026? The school said Friday that it was in "ongoing discussions" to host its season opener against Western Michigan in Germany. The game would be held at Deutsche Bank Park in Frankfurt on Aug. 29. The soccer stadium hosted two NFL games in November of 2023 when the Kansas City Chiefs beat the Miami Dolphins and the Indianapolis Colts beat the New England Patriots. "We are in advanced discussions to create this first-of-its-kind opportunity for our student-athletes and fans," Michigan athletic director Warde Manuel said in a statement. "The University of Michigan is one of the few worldwide brands in college athletics and the interest in playing an international game would be unique. This would be a great opportunity to teach 'Go Blue' to a new group of fans in Germany." The game was originally scheduled for Sept. 5. If it's played in Germany, it will be in Week 0, as the official opening weekend of the 2025 season is a week later than it is in 2024 thanks to the date of Labor Day. Michigan's likely move to play in Europe comes as college programs are now regularly hosting games on the other side of the Atlantic. The 2025 season kicks off with Kansas State and Iowa State in Dublin. A year ago, Georgia Tech took down Florida State in Dublin in a harbinger of bad things to come for the Seminoles in 2024. The game between Michigan and Western Michigan would be the second international game of the 2026 season. North Carolina and TCU are playing in Dublin on the same day after the two teams play in Chapel Hill in Week 1 in 2025. That game will be the first of the Bill Belichick era at North Carolina. The game between the Wolverines and Broncos is set to be just the seventh meeting for the schools. They first met in 2001 and Michigan has won all six contests by a combined score of 234 to 67.

Jon Rahm picks Sergio Garcia for a role Tiger Woods turned down last year

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Tiger Woods accomplished just about everything in golf and served every imaginable role. From grand slam champion to mentor, international icon and board member, he's just about done it all. But one title he's consistently sidestepped is Ryder Cup captain. Despite competing in eight Ryder Cups and serving as a player-captain at the 2019 Presidents Cup, Woods officially declined the offer to lead Team USA at this year's Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black. "With my new responsibilities to the Tour and time commitments involved, I felt like I would not be able to commit the time to Team USA and the players required as a captain," the 15-time major winner stated last year as quoted by the PGA Tour. That opened the door the PGA of America to choose Keegan Bradley as the man to captain Team USA at Bethpage Black for the 2025 Ryder Cup in late September. Now, with just 62 days until the Bethpage battle, attention is already shifting to the 2031 Ryder Cup, which was officially awarded to Camiral in Girona, Spain, last week. The captains for both sides remain undecided, but Spanish star Jon Rahm believes his countryman and longtime Woods rival, Sergio Garcia, would be the perfect choice to lead Team Europe in the homeland. (Photo by) More Getty Images Speaking Wednesday at LIV Golf UK, Rahm gave his full-throated endorsement for Garcia. "Knowing that some things smoothed over in the world of golf, that Sergio could possibly be the captain of the Ryder Cup team, that also adds to it," Rahm shared publicly at JCB Golf & Country Club in the Midlands of England. "I think there's something to say about possibly having, obviously, a local captain. I think it would do wonders for the crowd. If history shows us anything—and it's very hard to compare anybody to Seve—but I've only heard stories about what that Ryder Cup was like. I would say, if possible, I think that's a very obvious good choice to have Sergio be a part of that one." Garcia is currently the all-time Ryder Cup points leader, with 28.5 points across 10 appearances from 1999 to 2021. His record stands at 25-13-7, and he's been part of some of Europe's most iconic moments, including a 3-0 run with Rahm at Whistling Straits in 2021. Rahm, who will turn 36 by 2031, showcased his determination to battle for his team in his homeland. "(In 1997), I think ... that I can remember, four Spanish people that were involved in that Ryder Cup with Seve. Miguel (Angel Jimenez) was a vice captain, Ollie (Jose Maria Olazabal) playing and then Nacho Garrido playing, as well, so only four people can say they have done that," Rahm stated as quoted. "I don't know how many players can ever say they've played a Ryder Cup in their home countries. Not many, besides the U.S. team, obviously. But it would be unbelievable. I'm very happy that it's happening. I'm hoping that somehow or another I can be a part of it. There's certainly some pressure that comes with it, but it truly would be a dream come true." As for Woods, it wouldn't be surprising to see him wear the captain's hat for an upcoming Ryder Cup. However, he might be a more likely pick for Team USA at the 2027 Cup at Adare Manor.
