Verstappen ends speculation, confirms Red Bull stay for next season

The Herald5 days ago
Four-times Formula One world champion Max Verstappen has ended speculation about a move to Mercedes next season by confirming for the first time on Thursday that he will race on with Red Bull.
"I think it's time to stop all the rumours. For me, it was always quite clear that I was staying," the Dutch driver told reporters ahead of the Hungarian Grand Prix.
"And that was the general feeling in the team because we are always in discussion about what we could do with the car and when you're not staying you stop talking about these kind of things. And I never did."
Formula One starts a new engine era next year in a major shake-up that could change the pecking order, with Mercedes expected to lead the way while Red Bull are making their own power unit after a split with Honda.
Reigning champion Verstappen has known break clauses in his contract but they have not been triggered, with the 27-year-old third in the standings at the mid-point and with two wins from 13 races.
It was widely accepted in Formula One that Verstappen would be staying, with the rumour-mill already turning to a possible exit from Red Bull in 2027 with performance clauses again applying next year.
Verstappen otherwise has a Red Bull contract that runs through 2028.
The sacking of Christian Horner this month as Red Bull team boss was also widely seen as another step by the energy drink company to convince the sport's most sought-after driver to stay with them.
"Some people just like to stir the pot, some people just like to create drama. But, for me, it's always been quite clear," said Verstappen.
Mercedes boss Toto Wolff said last week that retaining his current lineup of George Russell and Italian Kimi Antonelli was a priority.
Russell told reporters separately at the Hungaroring that he was sure to be racing for Mercedes next year but nothing would be signed until after the August break, which follows the Hungarian race.
While Russell's current deal expires at the end of the year, he has been under a management contract with Mercedes since he was 16 – meaning his employers are effectively negotiating with themselves.
"Conversations have started but we are now heading into the summer break," said Russell.
"Toto and I have spoken a lot this week but we haven't spoken once about the contract because we're both trying to solve the car's performance and get the team in the right place.
"And I personally want to go into the summer break and enjoy the only two weeks off I have in the year and I don't want to be thinking about contracts," he added. "There isn't really a major time pressure now from my side, nor from Mercedes' side."

Not only will the two battery-powered midsize SUVs be direct competitors when they hit the market, but both will usher in new design and engineering eras for their respective carmakers. The Mercedes GLC electric debuts a brand new design language for the firm's electric vehicles, with the softer lines of its current EQ models having faced criticism for their lack of imagination and identity. To whet our appetites, Mercedes released a teaser image this week, showing the new upright, and more traditional-looking, 'grille' that will feature on its electric GLC. An illuminated version will also be offered, featuring 942 backlit dots and animation sequences. The battery-powered GLC with EQ Technology replaces the EQC SUV, with Mercedes moving to a more integrated naming convention for its models. While it shares a name with its combustion-engined GLC sibling, the electric model will feature a completely different platform, in the form of Merc's upcoming MB-EA dedicated electric vehicle architecture. Technical details are still under wraps, but CarExpert reports that the new electric GLC is likely to offer a WLTP driving range of more than 800km, while the most powerful version could produce over 500kW. BMW EV revolution loading Either way, the GLC is going to face some stiff competition from its Bavarian rival, with BMW stating that the new iX3 will be one of the most significant model introductions in the company's entire history. Ushering in the 'Neue Klasse' family of vehicles, it claims to make huge strides in EV technology as well as sustainability and connectivity. The new BMW iX3 ushers in the 'Neue Klasse' architecture. Furthermore, its Gen6 powertrain technology and BMW Dynamic Performance Control software stack aim to raise the dynamic potential of electric powertrains to a new level. The iX3 also debuts the new BMW Panoramic iDrive cockpit interface, which displays all relevant driving information in the driver's ideal line of sight. 'With the all-new #BMW iX3, we bring our revolutionary technologies into series production for the first time, and we can hardly wait to see it in action on the road. Court hits the brakes: Mercedes repossesses R1. 6m GLE after owner's 6-year legal joyride

The North Gauteng High Court has ordered that Mercedes-Benz can repossess a 2016 Mercedes-Benz GLE 63 S AMG valued at over R1.6 million after its owner defaulted on payments and ignored a settlement agreement. Image: Ron | IOL The North Gauteng High Court has ordered that Mercedes-Benz can repossess a 2016 Mercedes-Benz GLE 63 S AMG valued at over R1.6 million after its owner defaulted on payments and ignored a settlement agreement. The six-year battle over the car was not straightforward. Leruma Thobejane, who represented himself in court while fully robed, alleged that Mercedes-Benz 'had fraudulently approached the court for the issuing of a warrant for delivery of the vehicle in September 2023, whilst being fully aware that that matter was on appeal before the Supreme Court of Appeal'. In the order, the judge found that 'in my view the warrant was issued in terms of the court order, and not in breach thereof'. The court noted that Thobejane had failed to meet his payment obligations. 'The respondent however did not dispute the allegations in the applicant's attorney's affidavit that he breached the settlement order, and that he did not make the required payments in terms thereof,' the ruling stated. The judge added: 'The applicant has already been waiting for payment in terms of the settlement agreement since September 30, 2021, and the respondent remains in possession of the vehicle. In my view relief that the applicant is entitled to, should not further be frustrated by reason the applicant's attorney's reliance on an incorrect subrule.' Thobejane was partially successful in having a previous warrant of execution set aside. However, ultimately, the court authorised Mercedes-Benz to repossess the vehicle under its latest ruling. Next Stay Close ✕ The dispute dates back to 2019, when Mercedes-Benz Finance instituted proceedings against Thobejane after he defaulted on payments for the vehicle. The credit agreement stipulated ownership would remain with Mercedes-Benz Finance until full payment was made. It also provided that, in the event of default, the company could cancel the agreement, repossess the vehicle, and claim any shortfall after resale. Despite demands, Thobejane fell into arrears, owing more than R1.36m by the time summons were issued. After litigation and discovery, the parties reached a settlement in August 2021, which was made an order of court in March 2023. The settlement agreement required Thobejane to make five consecutive monthly payments totalling R1.5m plus interest and costs. It included a clause that if he breached the payment terms, the full outstanding balance would immediately become due, and Mercedes-Benz Finance could apply for judgment and repossession – rights to which Thobejane consented.
