Russia launches largest drone attack against Ukraine since beginning of war, Ukrainian military says

CNN18-05-2025
Russia has battered Ukraine overnight with its largest drone attack since the war began, Ukraine's military said Sunday, as Moscow intensified its military assault despite holding direct peace talks with Kyiv Friday.
Russia launched 273 Shahed drones in one night, the Ukrainian Air Force said, predominantly targeting the central Kyiv region.
A 28-year-old woman was killed, and three others including a four-year-old child were injured, according to Mykola Kalashnik, the governor of the Kyiv region.
Ruslan Stefanchuk, the head of Ukraine's parliament, said in a social media post Sunday: 'The air raid alarm lasted almost nine hours. This is what Putin's 'sincere desire for peace' looks like.'
The attack destroyed residential buildings, damaged a high-rise and set garages on fire, Stefanchuk wrote, adding: 'This is terror in its purest form.'
The 'massive attack' caused a number of fires, Ukraine's emergency services also said, adding that 55 rescue workers had been deployed.
Elsewhere, Russian shelling killed one person and injured eight in the Donetsk region Saturday, according to the head of the Donetsk regional military administration, Vadym Filashkin. Russian drones also targeted the Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions, regional military chiefs said.
The latest assault comes after a Russian drone attack on a bus in Ukraine's northeastern region of Sumy killed at least nine people and injured seven Saturday, just hours after the two countries met for the first direct peace talks since the early weeks of Russia's 2022 invasion.
The negotiations in Turkey failed to produce a major breakthrough. The two countries discussed a possible meeting between their presidents, a ceasefire and agreed a prisoner swap.
The talks capped days of back-and-forth: Russia's President Vladimir Putin called for the face-to-face meeting but did not attend himself, instead sending a junior delegation after rejecting Ukraine's proposal of a 30-day ceasefire.
During the talks, Russia demanded Ukraine cede land that was still under Kyiv's control, a source familiar with Friday's negotiations told CNN, a position Ukraine has long dismissed. The leaders of the United Kingdom, France, Germany and Poland called Russia's stance in the talks 'unacceptable.'
CNN's Victoria Butenko and Nick Paton Walsh contributed reporting.

Zelenskiy opts for more formal, calibrated wardrobe ahead of Trump meeting

KYIV (Reuters) -Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has retuned his wardrobe since a disastrous Oval Office meeting with Donald Trump in February, switching his typical khaki military-style tee-shirts and long-sleeved tops for more formal, but still rugged, black suit-style jackets and shirts. The media-savvy leader had wanted to show solidarity with the troops fighting Russia on the frontline. But he was chided by a U.S. reporter for not wearing a suit at the White House event, which descended into a shouting match over whether he was showing sufficient gratitude for U.S. wartime support. Since then, Zelenskiy has worked to rebuild relations with Washington, whose military help Kyiv still badly needs, even though the U.S. president has shown no sign of resuming the donations of weaponry that his predecessor Joe Biden had instituted. When Zelenskiy met Trump at Pope Francis's funeral in Rome in April, he wore a heavy black field jacket and black shirt buttoned to the collar, with no tie. He sported a similar look when meeting British Prime Minister Keir Starmer in London on Monday, and again at the dinner hosted on Tuesday by the Dutch king that preceded Wednesday's NATO summit in The Hague. Although he was not invited to the meeting itself, he met with Trump afterwards, with an agenda including a wish-list of arms purchases. The subtle switch, stopping short of white shirt or tie, has captured attention on social media and from the Ukrainian edition of ELLE magazine, which on Wednesday described his changed look as "visual diplomacy of a new kind". The negative focus on Zelenskiy's attire at the White House was widely criticised by Ukrainians, who have largely rallied around their leader since Moscow's February 2022 invasion. A communications adviser for the president's office did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment.

Russia Hits Ukraine With Record Air Barrage Hours After Trump-Putin Call

Russia attacked Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities on Friday with the largest number of drones and missiles launched in a single barrage so far in the war, according to Ukraine's air force, just hours after a phone call between President Trump and President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia. The assault left Kyiv, the Ukrainian capital, wrapped in smoke from fires early Friday, though the authorities reported little damage and it was not immediately clear what had burned. Officials said residential buildings had been damaged in five neighborhoods. Russia has been ramping up drone attacks in recent months with record numbers launched almost weekly. The attacks, as happened Friday, typically combine exploding drones, cruise and ballistic missiles, and decoys intended to confuse or overwhelm Ukraine's air defenses. Mr. Trump and Mr. Putin spoke by phone shortly before the air-raid alerts went off in Kyiv. After the call, Mr. Trump told reporters, 'I didn't make any progress with him at all.' There was no clear link between the timing of the air assault and the call, which was at least the sixth between Mr. Trump and Mr. Putin this year, given the frequency of the large-scale aerial attacks. Friday's attack was also the first large-scale volley from Russia since the Trump administration said this week that it would withhold some of the air defense missiles and other weapons that the United States had promised to the Ukrainian military. Those supplies were expected in the coming weeks or months. Want all of The Times? Subscribe.

Germany Prepares €25 Billion Tank Order to Ramp Up NATO Brigades

Germany is considering purchasing up to 2,500 armored fighting vehicles and as many as 1,000 battle tanks as part of a joint European effort to create new NATO brigades to deter Russia, according to people familiar with the matter. The North Atlantic Treaty Organization has asked Germany to contribute as many as seven combat brigades to the alliance within the next decade. The fighting vehicles and tanks, if approved, would equip these forces, people familiar with the matter said on condition of anonymity. The ramp-up reflects growing concern among allies about heightened Russian hostility since Moscow's full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
