‘Together' Director Explains How that Wild Final Shot Was Made (Without AI)
Ever since its debut at Sundance earlier this year, fans of horror have had Michael Shanks' new film, Together, on their radars. Neon picked it up out of the festival and, after some really creepy trailers and marketing, opened it in theaters last weekend with solid results. It's a provocative, surprising, and incredibly disgusting movie with an ending viewers will not soon forget. An ending that was achieved through traditional methods of visual effects and without a hint of per that spoiler warning above, we're about to explain what happens at the end of Together, so if you haven't seen it and want to, we urge you to look away right now. In the film Tim and Millie (Dave Franco and Alison Brie) get infected by this unexplained force that wants their bodies to become one. The how and why behind it is pretty weird, mysterious, and fun, but eventually, the couple realize the only way to defeat this force is to give in to it. And so we watch as their bodies combine from two into one, and, in the film's final shot, a completely new person, the amalgamation of both of them, opens the door to Millie's visiting parents. Speaking on Indiewire's Filmmaker Toolkit Podcast, Shanks explained that both the blending of the bodies and the new character were achieved without the use of AI. 'The amount of screenings I've gone to now, and people come up to me and say, 'Was that AI at the end?' It's just so crazy that people assume AI is now the cause. We've used absolutely none of it on this film,' Shanks said. 'As a VFX guy, as somebody that's worked with all these teams that put in so much work, it's so frustrating now that people look at something that looks interesting or good, and they [assume] just a computer made it. It's like, 'No, no, no, no, no.'' Instead, the 'Tillie' character was created using makeup and visual effects compositing by Genevieve Camilleri. 'In pre-production, Gen just went up and took photos of Dave and Alison and then in Nuke, she made a bunch of variations on which elements to take from which of their faces to figure out what is essential to seeing both of them in that final image,' Shanks said. Then, on the day, the director shot the scene with both actors. 'After we shot the scene with Alison, we moved in Dave, with a bunch of dots on his face,' he continued. 'Gen has taken his jaw and his lips and stuck that onto the bottom [of the face]. It's really a combination of makeup and, you wouldn't call it CGI, because nothing's computer-generated, but it's compositing.' Stepping back a bit from the specifics of Together, it's wild that Shanks has to defend that his film didn't use generative AI. If it had come out even just 3-4 years ago, it would not have even been a thought. We all would've just assumed it was one of them dressing up as the other or visual effects. Ultimately, it's kind of both. But the whole conversation changed when we began living in a world where you can put 'Dave Franco and Alison Brie as one person' into a program and get something back in seconds. Basically, props to Shanks for doing something right, working hard at it, and making something memorable. Virginia Huynh, who goes by 'Gina,' was part of the prosecution's case against Combs, initially anonymously referred to as 'Victim-3.' But before the trial began, prosecutors alerted the court while 'Victim-3' was under subpoena to testify, they had lost touch with her and her attorney, and 'she may not show up.' On Sunday, in their latest attempt to get Combs released on bail ahead of his sentencing, Combs' defense has included a letter from 'Victim-3,' who for the first time has identified herself by name. In the letter, Huynh wrote to the judge she does not believe Combs is a danger to the community and he is a committed family man 'who has not been violent in many years.' One day later, the presiding judge in the case denied Combs' newest request for release on bail. Huynh's letter was included as an exhibit in the defense's latest filing, their reply to the prosecution's opposition to releasing Combs on bail ahead of his sentencing, which is set for October 3. Combs was convicted by a jury last month on two charges of transportation to engage in prostitution but acquitted on more serious charges which would have put him behind bars for decades or for life: racketeering conspiracy and sex trafficking. In the letter, Huynh said she has known Combs for years, both professionally and personally. She acknowledged her relationship with the disgraced mogul 'was not always perfect,' but 'he was willing to acknowledge his mistakes and make better decisions in the future.' 'By the time our relationship ended, he embodied an energy of love, patience and gentleness that was markedly different from his past behavior. To my knowledge, he has not been violent for many years, and he has been committed to being a father first,' the letter stated. 'I am writing because I do not view Mr. Combs as a danger to me or to the community.' During the trial, Combs' former assistant George Kaplan testified he once saw Combs throwing apples at Huynh at his home in Miami. Cassie Ventura, the case's star witness and another former girlfriend of Combs, testified Combs was unfaithful to her by dating Gina throughout their 11-year relationship. Nicholas Biase, spokesman for the US Attorney's Office for the Southern District of New York, declined to comment on the letter. Combs' defense has asked the court to release him on bail on a $50 million bond. They have argued he is not a danger to the community and is not a flight risk. Last week, they also filed a motion, asking the judge to completely acquit him or give him a new trial, arguing he was unfairly prosecuted based on the Mann Act, calling his conviction 'unconstitutional.' 'This conviction stands alone, but it should not stand at all,' Combs' attorney Alexandra Shapiro wrote in the 62-page memorandum. Other witnesses in the case, including Ventura, previously wrote letters to the judge, pleading for him to remain incarcerated, telling the court they would fear for their safety if he were released from jail ahead of his sentencing. Combs was physically violent on numerous occasions with Ventura, and photographic and video evidence of her being assaulted was shown to the jury throughout the trial, including 2016 hotel surveillance footage of Combs beating Ventura, which was first released by CNN. In his decision to deny Combs bail immediately after the verdict, the judge cited Combs' admitted pattern of violence in his relationships. This story has been updated with additional details. At her mom's house, she says Wally has his own bed, and grandma always goes the extra mile, making sure there's a new toy or treat waiting for him when he arrives. 'They're the only ones who watch him, and they get so excited when he comes to visit,' Moriggi says. 'They truly treat him like their grandchild.' 'He is obsessed with her,' the product analyst and creator adds. 'Whenever he sees her, he absolutely loses his mind. He loves her so much, but I think she might love him even more. She'll literally pet him for hours, so he knows when he sees her, he's about to get a lot of love (and snacks).' After getting Wally's things ready, Moriggi loaded him into the car and headed off to her parents' house, about an hour away from their home in Boston. As the family got closer, she says Wally smelled where they were going and started bouncing around in the backseat, eager to get out. Once they arrived and parked, Moriggi got Wally out of the car and dressed him in his little backpack and hat, hoping to to surprise grandma with how cute he looked.
