Shubman Gill, who is the youngest batter to score a double century in ODI cricket, scored his maiden double century in Test cricket on Thursday (July 3).
Shubman Gill scored a double century (269) for India in the first innings of the ongoing second Test against England. In the match taking place at Edgbaston in Birmingham, Gill came out to bat at No. 4 and scored 269 runs from 387 balls. During his stay at the crease, the right-handed batter from Punjab smacked 30 fours and three sixes for Team India.
The double century in the first innings of the Birmingham Test is Gill's first 200-plus-run score in Test cricket, and it helped him join Sachin Tendulkar, Rohit Sharma, Virender Sehwag, and Chris Gayle in an elite list.
The right-handed batter became only the fifth cricketer in the world to score a double century in both the Test and ODI formats of the game.
Gill scored a double century (208) in ODIs for India against New Zealand in Hyderabad on January 18, 2023.
Tendulkar was the first batter to score a double century in both Tests and ODIs. He achieved the feat in February 2010. During his 24-year-long international career, Tendulkar scored six double centuries in 200 Tests and one double century in 463 ODIs for India.
Sehwag equalled Sachin's elite feat in December 2011 when he scored 219 runs against the West Indies during an ODI match played at Holkar Stadium in Indore. During his 14-year-long international career for India, Sehwag scored six centuries (including two 300s) in Test cricket and one double century in ODIs.
Rohit, who is the current captain of India's ODI team, has three double centuries to his name in ODIs and one in Test cricket. He scored 209 against Australia in 2013, 264 against Sri Lanka in 2014, and 208* against Sri Lanka in 2017, and his only double century in Tests was against South Africa in Ranchi. During the red-ball match played from October 19 to 22 in 2019, Rohit scored 212 runs from 255 balls in the first innings.
Gayle is the only non-Indian batter to score a double century in both Tests and ODIs. During his 22-year-long international career for the Men in Maroon, Gayle played 103 Tests and 301 ODIs. He scored one double century and two triple centuries in Test cricket and crossed the 200-run mark once in ODIs. During the 2015 ODI World Cup match played between the West Indies and Zimbabwe in Canberra on February 24, 2025, Gayle scored 215 runs from 147 balls.

Bumrah will definitely return to India's 11 in Lord's: Shubman Gill

India, after going down in the first Test against England in Leeds, came back all guns blazing in the second Test at Edgbaston as they won the match by an incredible 336 runs to level the series 1-1. Indian skipper Shubman Gill led from the front by scoring 269 runs in the first innings and 161 runs in the second innings to script India's first-ever Test win over England at Edgbaston. He was also named Man of the Match for his efforts. Gill, while receiving his Player of the Match award after the match, answered one of the biggest questions all Indian fans were thinking about. Gill confirmed that ace Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah will make his return to India's playing XI at Lord's for the third Test match starting Thursday, July 10. Notably, Bumrah was rested for the second match to manage his workload, and Akash Deep — who took 10 wickets in the match — was named his replacement. First innings total helped While talking about the match, Gill said that the team knew that despite the wicket at Edgbaston favouring batters, a score of 400 or 500 runs would keep them in the game. India scored 587 runs in the first innings and 427 runs in the second innings to hand England a huge target of 608 to win, which the English team failed to chase and crumbled for just 271. He was moving the ball both ways Gill also showered praise on his bowlers, especially Akash Deep, who was India's highest wicket-taker in the match with match figures of 10 for 187. Gill said, 'He (Akash Deep) hit the right lengths and was getting the ball to move both ways, which was difficult on a pitch like this. He was magnificent for us.' Gill also praised other bowlers and credited them for removing the English top order early in both innings. England lost their first five wickets on 84 in the first innings and on 85 in the second. Gill also acknowledged Prasidh Krishna by saying that even though the pacer did not get many wickets in the game, he was hitting the right line and was providing much-needed support to the other two pacers.

Akash Deep And Co. Burst Into Spirited Celebration After India Secures Historic Win At Edgbaston: WATCH

Last Updated: India secured their first-ever Test win at Edgbaston, defeating England by 336 runs to level the series 1-1. It's a day to relish and remember for years to come for the Indian Cricket Team, who etched history. India registered their first-ever win at Edgbaston, beating England in the second Test by 336 runs to level the five-match series 1-1 for the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy in Birmingham on Sunday. Pacer Akash Deep (6/99) picked his maiden five-for in Tests. He rocked England early, striking twice in a rain-delayed morning session. His super-show with the ball in the second innings, coupled with his 4-wicket outing in the first, helped him enter his name in the history books by becoming the 2nd Indian bowler in 93 years to take a 10-wicket haul in a Test match in England. He returned after lunch to deliver the decisive blow, dismissing Jamie Smith (88), who was the only England batter to show fight in an otherwise underwhelming batting performance by the hosts. He then took the final wicket of Brydon Carse (38), as India burst into celebration on the pitch. The forced stoppage left India 80 overs to bowl out England, who began the day at 72 for three chasing a near-impossible 608. After resumption, England were reduced to 153 for 6 by lunch, with India's bowlers maintaining relentless pressure. The hosts were eventually bowled out in the second session, never posing a real threat to India's mammoth 608-run target. England had won the first Test at Headingley last week. India had never won at Edgbaston in eight Test matches, losing seven, until Sunday. India are looking to record just their fourth Test series win in England following triumphs in 1971, 1986, and 2007. The third Test begins at Lord's in London on July 10. (with agency inputs)
