Leena Maria Paul denied bail in Rs 200 crore scam case by SC; cites health issues
Actress and model Leena Maria Paul has faced a legal blow as the Supreme Court dismissed her bail plea in the Rs 200 crore financial fraud case tied to notorious conman Sukesh Chandrasekhar.
Leena, who is a co-accused in the case, sought bail on health grounds, claiming she has been suffering from tuberculosis and has been imprisoned for over three and a half years.
According to Asianet News, the Supreme Court, however, refused to intervene at this stage, citing that her bail application is already under consideration by the Delhi High Court. The bench noted that it would be inappropriate to entertain her plea while the matter is still pending before the lower court.
The court directed her to approach them again, if necessary, after the High Court delivers its verdict.

Supreme Court urges quick hearing in HC
According to the reports, while rejecting Leena's request, the Supreme Court acknowledged the delay in the High Court's decision-making process and urged the latter to expedite the hearing. Leena had argued that her prolonged custody, coupled with her deteriorating health, warranted immediate relief.
However, the court emphasized procedural discipline and instructed her to wait for the outcome of the ongoing High Court proceedings.
The actress had highlighted that she has been in judicial custody since 2021 and is suffering from a chronic illness, which she believes should be considered a valid ground for bail. Despite these arguments, the top court remained firm on not bypassing the due process already in motion.
Tied to Sukesh Chandrasekhar's Rs 200 crore scam
For the unversed, Leena Maria Paul was arrested in connection with a sensational fraud case in which Sukesh Chandrasekhar and his team allegedly extorted Rs 200 crore from Aditi Singh, the wife of Shivinder Singh—former promoter of Fortis Healthcare. The con involved promises to secure bail for Shivinder and his brother Malvinder Mohan Singh, both of whom are in jail on separate financial crime charges.
On the work front, Leena is known for her roles in Malayalam films like 'Husbands in Goa', 'Cobra', 'Nandalala', and 'Red Chillies alongside Mohanlal.

Thirteen people, including actors and brand ambassadors Talpade and Alok Nath, were booked ont he complaint of 37-year-old Sonipat resident Vipul Antil. Additional Commissioner of Police, Murthal, Sonipat, Ajeet Singh said the complaint was against a multi-marketing company under investigated. About the two actors, the ACP had said, "It has been alleged that they were its brand ambassadors and victims get lured to invest because of such personalities. They were named in the complaint. An FIR has been registered. Now, it will be investigated what was their role." The FIR was registered on January 22 under Sections 316 (2), 318 (2) and 318 (4) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, for various offences, including criminal breach of trust and cheating, on Antil's complaint. Supreme Court's BIG order in custodial torture case in J&K: Orders ₹50 Lakh compensation, CBI probe
The Supreme Court on July 21 ordered a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) inquiry into the alleged torture of a police constable at a Joint Interrogation Centre (JIC) in Jammu and Kashmir's Kupwara in 2023. The top Court also directed immediate arrest of the officers of the J&K police who were responsible for the abuse and ordered the Union Territory administration to pay a compensation of ₹ 50,00,000 to the victim as restitution for the gross violation of his fundamental rights. The bench of Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta said that the accused officials involved in the alleged custodial violence must be arrested within a month. The Appellant Khursheed Ahmed Chauhan, a police constable, had approached the Supreme Court against the High Court's refusal to quash FIR registered against him under Section 309 IPC (attempt to commit suicide). Chauhan alleged that he was subjected to inhuman and degrading torture, including mutilation of his private parts, during a six-day illegal detention from February 20 to 26, 2023, at JIC Kupwara. The SC bench set aside the High Court's decision. In the judgment authored by Justice Mehta, the SC noted that the continuation of the criminal proceedings of an alleged offence under Section 309 IPC would be travesty of justice, and hence quashed the FIR, legal news website LiveLaw said. However, it took strong exception to the custodial violence suffered by the Appellant during the illegal detention, LiveLaw said. Apart from conducting a detailed inquiry about the officers responsible for the abuse, the CBI was also directed to conduct an inquiry into 'systemic issues' prevailing at the JIC in Kupwara. The continuation of the criminal proceedings of an alleged offence under Section 309 IPC would be travesty of justice. The court underscored the need to assess whether structural or institutional failings enabled a climate of impunity that led to the custodial abuse, LiveLaw said. The Court further mandated that the police officers allegedly involved in the torture be arrested forthwith, within a period of one month, and that the investigation be completed within three months from the date of FIR registration, according to LiveLaw.
