ASEAN Reiterates Commitment To Myanmar Peace Plan, Calls For End To Violence
KUALA LUMPUR, May 27 (Bernama) – ASEAN leaders have expressed deep concern over the worsening conflict and humanitarian situation in Myanmar, urging all parties to halt violence and recommit to the grouping's Five-Point Consensus (5PC) as the primary framework for resolving the crisis.
In a Chairman's Statement issued at the conclusion of the 46th ASEAN Summit chaired by Malaysia here today, the leaders stressed that the 5PC remains the regional grouping's central reference in guiding efforts toward restoring peace and stability in Myanmar, which has been plagued by conflict since the military seized power in 2021.
'We reaffirmed our united position that the 5PC remains our main reference to address the political crisis in Myanmar,' the statement read, underscoring the bloc's consensus to uphold previous decisions made by ASEAN Heads of State and Government.
The leaders also reiterated their decision to restrict Myanmar's representation at ASEAN Summits and Foreign Ministers' Meetings to the non-political level, while affirming that ASEAN's community-building efforts and decision-making processes must continue unaffected.
The summit welcomed the exchange of ideas during recent informal consultations aimed at reinvigorating implementation of the 5PC and finding practical ways forward amid the lack of tangible progress on the ground.
ASEAN denounced the continued violence perpetrated against civilians and public facilities in Myanmar, calling on all actors to exercise restraint and ensure the protection of non-combatants and essential infrastructure.
'We urge all parties involved to take concrete action to immediately halt indiscriminate violence,' the leaders said, while also calling for an environment that enables humanitarian access and inclusive national dialogue.
In a significant move, the bloc issued the ASEAN Leaders' Statement on an Extended and Expanded Ceasefire in Myanmar, aimed at reducing hostilities and creating space for peaceful negotiations.
ASEAN leaders also welcomed ongoing humanitarian relief efforts by the ASEAN Coordinating Centre for Humanitarian Assistance on Disaster Management (AHA Centre), in line with Point 4 of the 5PC, which calls for the provision of humanitarian aid.

MELAKA, July 26 (Bernama) -- The MADANI Community nationwide will receive further details related to any announcement within 24 hours after it is made, says Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil. He said the measure was to deliver accurate information directly to the grassroots in each locality. 'For technical matters, it may be difficult, but we want the MADANI Community to get the simplest explanation,' he said at the 2025 Peninsular Malaysia MADANI Community Retreat held in conjunction with the launch of the National Month and Fly the Jalur Gemilang 2025 at Mini Stadium Bistari, Ayer Keroh here tonight. The retreat, attended by around 2,300 participants from 1,406 MADANI Communities, was also joined by Melaka Science, Technology, Innovation and Digital Communication Committee chairman Datuk Fairul Nizam Roslan. Also present were Senior Division Secretary (Management) of the Ministry of Communications, Mazlan Abd Mutalib, and Information Department director-general Julina Johan. Meanwhile, Fahmi said among the major announcements to be made by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim was the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) on July 31. He said the tabling of a Malaysia Plan usually involved highly technical details related to the country's physical development, such as the construction of hospitals and schools. 'But within 24 hours, the MADANI Community will receive simplified explanations and breakdowns so that they can communicate the information in an easy-to-understand way to their respective communities. 'So this will be a new thing, because I want the MADANI Community to grasp and absorb any government announcement quickly,' he said.

Malaysia urges Thailand, Cambodia to resume peace talk
KUALA LUMPUR: Thailand and Cambodia have been urged to hold negotiations to restore peace and stability, in line with the spirit of Asean unity and fraternity. Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan said efforts to resolve the ongoing conflict between the two nations must be guided by principles of solidarity and good neighbourliness. He said Malaysia stands ready to play a constructive role, through the Asean Chair's Office, in helping Thailand and Cambodia resume talks and bring an end to the fighting. Mohamad also reiterated Malaysia's call for both countries to exercise maximum restraint and implement an immediate, unconditional ceasefire. "This is to prevent either Thailand or Cambodia from taking any action that may jeopardise peace efforts. "As the Asean Chair for 2025, Malaysia is deeply concerned about the escalating tensions between the governments of Thailand and Cambodia. "The situation has already resulted in rising casualties on both sides, widespread damage to public property, and the displacement of many residents from border areas," he said in a statement. The latest round of clashes between Thailand and Cambodia stems from tensions that began in May, following the death of a Cambodian soldier during an armed confrontation at the border. The 818-kilometre border between the two countries has long been a source of dispute, with both claiming sovereignty over areas demarcated during French colonial rule in 1907. Several ancient temples along the border remain key points of contention, including Prasat Ta Moan Thom and the famed Preah Vihear Temple. International media earlier reported that fighting had entered its third day, although there appeared to be a glimmer of hope, as both sides expressed willingness to seek diplomatic support, claimed acts of self-defence, and called for an end to hostilities through dialogue. At least 30 people have been killed and over 130,000 displaced in what is now the worst conflict between the two Southeast Asian neighbours in 13 years. Thailand's death toll remains at 19 as of today, while Cambodian Defence Ministry spokesperson Maly Socheata confirmed the deaths of five soldiers and eight civilians. In February, the dispute over Prasat Ta Moan Thom, a Khmer temple near the Thai border, flared up further when Thai authorities barred Cambodian tourists from singing their national anthem at the site. The Cambodian government, however, has denied initiating the conflict, stating it only responded after Thai forces launched an armed attack. Both nations have since severed diplomatic ties and continue to blame each other for triggering the violence. Thailand has also announced the closure of all border checkpoints with Cambodia until further notice.
