Capt. Amir Saad, 22, from Druze village Yanuh-Jat, Sgt. Inon Nuriel Vana, 20, from Kiryat Tivon, and M.-Sgt. Betzalel Yehoshua Mosbacher, 32, from Avnei Eitan, were killed in Gaza.
Israeli officials and family members reacted on Sunday to the deaths of three IDF soldiers, all killed in the Gaza Strip over the weekend.
Capt. Amir Saad, 22, from Druze village Yanuh-Jat, Sgt. Inon Nuriel Vana, 20, from Kiryat Tivon, and M.-Sgt. Betzalel Yehoshua Mosbacher, 32, from Avnei Eitan, were killed over the weekend, with the IDF announcing their deaths on Saturday evening and Sunday morning.
Saad's family, members of Israel's Druze community, said in a statement on Saturday, "This evening, our family lost what is most dear to us. With deep sorrow and indescribable pain, we announce the death of our beloved, Captain Amir Abdallah Saad, who fell during his service and a battalion mission in Khan Yunis, Gaza, as part of Operation Swords of Iron."
"Amir is the second fallen soldier from our family in this difficult and accursed war – a cousin of Lt.-Col. Alim Saad, who fell at the beginning of the war. A combat officer, beloved son, brother, and grandson, who went out to defend the state and the people – and did not return.'
Nava Nuriel, the mother of Sgt. Inon Nuriel Vana, wrote in a post to Facebook on Sunday morning, "For two days now, I've known deep inside that you would come to me. I've been preparing myself for the worst, wondering how I'll cope, what I'll do. For two days, I've felt it – and pushed it away. But nothing prepares a mother for the knock at the door."
"My little Yinon. My beloved. The whole world is crying for you now, and I find myself asking for forgiveness – for not holding you tightly enough the last time. Then came the knock at the door: 'We won't leave you. We are here for you.' And in that moment, I disappeared into the abyss. Now, all I can do is begin the long climb out," Nuriel wrote.
"With deepest sorrow, we announce our joining of the family no one wishes to join – the family of the bereaved. Our Yinon is gone."
Israeli officials mourn fallen soldiers
Defense Minister Israel Katz wrote in a post to X/Twitter, "We bow our heads in great sorrow for the loss of our heroic fighters: Captain Amir Saad, an officer in the Golani Reconnaissance Unit, Sergeant Yinon Nuriel Vana, a fighter in the Golani Reconnaissance Unit, and Master Sergeant (Res.) Betzalel Yehoshua Masbacher, a fighter in the 749th Combat Engineering Battalion, succumbed to his severe injuries about a week after being wounded in battle in the Gaza Strip."
"The State of Israel has lost three heroic young men, among its finest sons, who acted for the security of the state and for the return of all our hostages."
Opposition chief and chairman of Yesh Atid, MK Yair Lapid, wrote, "Three warriors, three of our finest sons, and all our hearts are broken. Master Sergeant (Res.) Betzalel Yehoshua Masbaker, 32, from Avnei Eitan, Captain Amir Saad, 22, from Yanuh-Jat, Technology and Maintenance Officer in the Golani Reconnaissance Unit, Sergeant Yinon Nuriel Vana, 20, from Kiryat Tivon, Technology and Maintenance Fighter in the Golani Reconnaissance Unit."
"I send my condolences to the families in their difficult time. May their memory be a blessing," Lapid said.

Family condemns Hamas video showing emaciated Israeli hostage

The family of Israeli hostage Evyatar David held by Hamas in Gaza has accused the group of deliberately starving him as part of a "propaganda campaign". The family statement on Saturday came a day after Hamas released a video showing an emaciated David in a narrow concrete tunnel. David, 24, has been in captivity since his seizure by Hamas at a music festival in southern Israel on 7 October 2023. "We are forced to witness our beloved son and brother, Evyatar David, deliberately and cynically starved in Hamas's tunnels in Gaza - a living skeleton, buried alive," the family statement added. The hostage's family also urged the Israeli government and the world community to do "everything possible to save Evyatar". In the video released by Hamas, Evyatar David is heard saying "I haven't eaten for days... I barely got drinking water" and is seen digging what he says will be his own grave. During its attack on Israel nearly two years ago, Hamas seized 251 hostages. David is one of 49 hostages who Israel says are still being held in Gaza. This includes 27 hostages who are believed to be dead. Israel has been accused by aid agencies of pushing Gaza towards famine by weaponising food in its war against Hamas - an allegation it denies. Israel has said there is "no starvation" and it is not imposing restrictions on aid entering Gaza - claims rejected by its close allies in Europe, the UN and other agencies active in the Strip. On Saturday, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said it was "continuing the series of actions aimed at improving the humanitarian response in the Gaza Strip". It said that 90 aid packages containing food for residents in southern and northern Gaza had been airdropped in the past few hours as part of co-operation between Israel, the United Arab Emirates, Jordan, Egypt, France and Germany. Meanwhile, the Hamas-run Gaza health ministry said seven more people, including a child, died of malnutrition in the territory on Saturday. The health ministry said the total number of malnutrition deaths since the start of the war has reached 169, including 93 children. Also on Saturday in Gaza, the health ministry said at least 83 had been killed and 1,079 injured as a result of Israel's military offensive in the past 24 hours. Al-Awda Hospital in Nuseirat told the BBC it had received the bodies of three people killed by Israeli forces near an aid distribution point on Salah al-Din street, south of the Wadi Gaza area in central Gaza, run by the US and Israeli-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF). The hospital said at least 36 people were injured. The IDF said its troops "fired warning shots" hundreds of metres away from the aid distribution site, and not during its operating hours, after a crowd did not comply with their calls not to advance towards them "in a manner that posed a threat". "The IDF is not aware of any casualties as a result of the warning shots, and the details of the incident are still being examined," it said. GHF said there was "nothing at or near our sites today". International journalists, including the BBC, are blocked by Israel from entering Gaza independently, making it difficult to verify claims. Israel imposed a total blockade of aid deliveries to Gaza at the start of March and resumed its military offensive against Hamas two weeks later, collapsing a two-month ceasefire. It said it wanted to put pressure on the group to release its remaining Israeli hostages. The blockade was partially eased after 11 weeks amid warnings of a looming famine from global experts, but shortages of food, medicine and fuel remain, aid agencies have said. Israel launched its offensive in Gaza in response to the Hamas-led attack on 7 October 2023, in which about 1,200 people were killed. The Hamas-run health authorities say 60,430 people have been killed as a result of the Israeli military campaign. Likud claims Milwidsky investigation ‘witchhunt' led by A-G, MKs' call to prevent appointment

The Likud statement claimed that the reasoning for opening the investigation against Milwidsky was largely due to this timing. The next steps necessary to officially appoint MK Hanoch Milwidsky as the chairperson of the Knesset's Finance Committee on Tuesday remain in place, despite requests of MKs to hold off on the appointment amid an investigation opened against him into sexual misconduct and obstruction of justice. The Likud party slammed the decision to open an investigation into sexual offenses against Milwidsky, of the same party, on Sunday, calling it 'an unrestrained witch hunt led by the attorney general against Israel.' Milwidsky was summoned for questioning at the police Lahav 433 unit on Friday for suspicion of obstructing justice and sexual misconduct charges, which include rape and witness tampering. While there have been reports of women testifying against him, Milwidsky has rejected all accusations. MK Pnina Tameno-Shete, head of the Committee on the Status of Women and Gender Equality, sent a letter on Saturday night to prevent Milwidsky's appointment due to the investigations against him. 'Someone who is under the heavy shadow of suspicion and disgrace regarding allegations of rape cannot serve in one of the most powerful and influential roles in the Knesset and in the country,' the letter read. 'So long as these suspicions have not been disproven, any such appointment is unacceptable,' the letter continued. The opening of the investigation against Milwidsky came two days after the Likud chose him to be the chairperson of the Knesset's Finance Committee. The Likud statement claimed that the reasoning for opening the investigation against Milwidsky was largely due to this timing. 'It is clear to everyone that the timing [of the investigation] is no coincidence and is driven by improper political motives,' the Likud statement read. The statement also emphasized that the investigation was an example of Attorney-General Gali Baharav-Miara's attempts to 'obstruct the work of the government in every possible way and launch wild investigations against coalition members' since the government announced its intention to dismiss her. A cabinet meeting for her dismissal has been set for next week on Tuesday (August 4). Although Milwidsky was appointed by Likud, he still must go through two more stages before he can officially take on the position. Both are expected to take place this week on Tuesday (July 29). The stages require that Milwidsky first be officially recommended by the Knesset's House Committee. Once this occurs, a subsequent vote by the Finance Committee itself is expected, which would provide final approval for Milwidsky's appointment. There is not expected to be a change in the plans to go ahead with the process on Tuesday, an MK and another source from the Likud both told The Jerusalem Post. Although the Knesset's summer recess began on Sunday, committees continue to meet during the break, also allowing the process to continue. Milwidsky initially was the leading contender to be the chairperson of the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee last week. However, ahead of the vote, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu selected Milwidsky to temporarily fill the position of chairperson for the Finance Committee instead. The position is temporary for Milwidsky because it would be returned to United Torah Judaism MK Moshe Gafni in the event that Gafni rejoins the coalition after recently leaving. Gafni left the coalition because of the fallout in the negotiations regarding the haredi bill that is expected to exempt a large number of ultra-Orthodox men from IDF service. This fallout is also the reason why the position of chairperson of the Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee became vacant. Tameno-Shete and MK Naama Lazimi of The Democrats party further called for Milwidsky's appointment to be put on hold at the start of a Sunday Knesset committee meeting they held on the topic of the numerous testimonies against organized ritual sexual abuse, along with the response of state authorities. Tameno-Shete emphasized that there 'must be no favouritism' toward Knesset members concerning investigations against them—meaning that until proven innocent, Milwidsky should not be appointed. 'The Israeli Knesset must send a very, very clear message that anyone who is suspected of and being investigated for such serious and grave offenses—sexual offenses, extortion, obstruction of justice, investigation, or however one chooses to label it—should not be given a powerful role or appointment, to put it plainly,' Tameno-Shete stated. Knesset's Finance Committee is 'very powerful' Tameno-Shete further underscored that the Knesset's Finance Committee is 'very powerful' and that the dignity of the Knesset and the public's trust should not be damaged by taking him on for such a role until his innocence is proven. In a later interview, Tameno-Shete said that she was 'appalled' by the allegations she had heard against Milwidsky. Lazimi stated in the opening remarks of the committee meeting that 'there is no way the Knesset can ignore' the investigations. 'It is very bothersome that not one person from the coalition said anything regarding this matter,' she added. Solve the daily Crossword
