Michael Lorenzen goes 6, Kyle Isbel homers as Royals top Twins
Michael Lorenzen pitched six solid innings and Vinny Pasquantino and Bobby Witt Jr. drove in one run apiece as the Royals won the opener of the four-game set.
Willi Castro and Harrison Bader drove in runs for the Twins, who lost for the third time in their last four games. Bader and Matt Wallner had two hits apiece for Minnesota.
Lorenzen (1-1) allowed one run and five hits. He struck out three and didn't walk a batter while helping Kansas City win for the third time in its last four games.
Hunter Harvey and Lucas Erceg tossed scoreless innings before Royals closer Carlos Estevez ran into trouble in the ninth.
Estevez hit Ty France on the elbow with one out then walked Castro with two out before Bader lined a single into left center to score France. Estevez then retired pinch hitter Edouard Julien on a grounder to second to record his third save.
Minnesota's Simeon Woods Richardson (0-1) was touched up for four runs and eight hits over 5 2/3 innings. He struck out six and walked four.
The Royals moved ahead to stay by pushing across two runs in the second inning.
MJ Melendez narrowly missed a home run to right and cruised into second with a double to lead off the inning. Maikel Garcia then singled to right to put runners on the corners.
Isbel reached on an infield single to score Melendez and one out later Witt hit into a fielder's choice to score Garcia and give Kansas City a 3-1 lead.
In the bottom of the sixth, Isbel jumped on a first-pitch changeup and hit a two-out homer to right to make it a three-run margin.
Jonathan India led off the bottom of the first with a double on a drive to deep left center that Minnesota's Byron Buxton had carom off his glove. One out later, Pasquantino hit an RBI double to left.
The Twins tied the score in the second. France double with one out, moved to third on a two-out wild pitch by Lorenzen and scored on Castro's double to center.

Lugo will earn $20 million annually plus a $3 million signing bonus, per the reports. The deal also includes a performance-based vesting option for a third season in 2028 for $20 million or a $17 million club option with a $3 million buyout, according to the reports. He was a 2024 All-Star in his first campaign after signing as a free agent with the Royals and finished second in the American League Cy Young Award voting. Lugo went 16-9 with a 3.00 ERA, 48 walks and 181 strikeouts in 206 2/3 innings over a major league-high 33 starts. His career record is 63-45 with 16 saves, a 3.33 ERA, 254 walks and 928 strikeouts in 960 2/3 innings over 353 games (116 starts) for the New York Mets (2016-22), San Diego Padres (2023) and Royals (2024-present). July 28 - Minnesota Twins All-Star center fielder Byron Buxton has cartilage irritation in his rib cage and his status is day-to-day, the team announced Sunday. Manager Rocco Baldelli said after Buxton's MRI exam on Sunday that the outfielder will not be placed on the injured list. "It's a good outcome," Baldelli said. "We'll see how he is tomorrow and so on, but to be day-to-day with what he left the game with, it's a good thing. We'll measure him out, get him looked at by the trainers each day, get him a lot of treatment and, hopefully, he'll be back very soon." Buxton, 31, left Saturday's 9-3 loss to the visiting Washington Nationals because of left-side soreness and sat out Sunday, when Harrison Bader started in center field and the Nationals won 7-2 in Minneapolis. Though Buxton has dealt with a spate of injuries throughout his career, the two-time All-Star has mostly been healthy this season except for going on the concussion injured list in May. Buxton is hitting .282 with 23 homers, 59 RBIs and 17 steals in 85 games this season. He has a .343 on-base percentage, .561 slugging percentage and .905 OPS. He is a career .249 hitter with 156 homers and 412 RBIs in 857 games for the Twins since the 2015 season. Buxton earned the Gold Glove for American League center fielders in 2017. July 27 - CJ Abrams went 2-for-3 with a homer, and the Washington Nationals pulled away for a 7-2 win over the Minnesota Twins on Sunday afternoon in Minneapolis.
