It doesn't make sense – Cristiano Ronaldo leads tributes to Diogo Jota

Cristiano Ronaldo said 'it doesn't make sense' following the death of his Portugal team-mate Diogo Jota, aged 28. The Liverpool forward died following a car crash in Spain, along with his younger brother Andre Silva, who was also a professional footballer and played for Liga Portugal 2 side Penafiel. Jota helped Liverpool to win the Premier League title last season and was part of the Portugal side, along with Ronaldo, that lifted the Nations League last month, and he got married less than a fortnight ago. — Cristiano Ronaldo (@Cristiano) July 3, 2025 Ronaldo said in a post on X alongside a photo of Jota: 'It doesn't make sense. Just now we were together in the National Team, just now you had gotten married. 'To your family, your wife, and your children, I send my condolences and wish them all the strength in the world. I know you will always be with them. Rest in Peace, Diogo and Andre. We will all miss you.' Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher also paid tribute to Jota, saying on Sky Sports News: 'Just in a state of shock. Not with anyone associated to Liverpool but football in general. It is one of the few times when the football family all come together. 'I just cannot believe it. For everybody involved but especially his family – his wife and the children they've got, it's devastating for all involved. 'I can only imagine how his team-mates feel at Liverpool and Portugal, they must be in a world of pain with his friends and family. 'It just shows us all how quickly life can change. What a summer he's had, and you get this devastating news that his family have had in the last few hours, you can't even comprehend it.' Atlético de Madrid is shocked by the tragic news of the passing of former club player Diogo Jota and his brother André. We send our deepest condolences to their family and loved ones. May they rest in peace. — Atlético de Madrid (@atletienglish) July 3, 2025 Raul Jimenez and Ruben Neves posted on their Instagram stories following the announcement of their former Wolves team-mate's death. Mexico striker Jimenez, now at Fulham, said: 'It's hard to receive this kind of news, and I still can't believe it. 'An excellent colleague, friend, and above all, a great father. Thanks for everything, my friend. We'll always remember you.' Jota's Portuguese compatriot Neves said: 'They say we only lose people when we forget them. I will never forget them.' My prayers goes out to his loved ones during this time! May you all be guided and protected! YNWA JOTA!! 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾❤️ — LeBron James (@KingJames) July 3, 2025 Jota's former clubs Porto and Atletico Madrid also took to social media. Porto said on X they were in 'mourning' in a statement, while Atletico added they were 'shocked by the tragic news'. Former Manchester United and England defender Gary Neville wrote on X: 'That is heartbreaking news on Diogo Jota and his brother. All my love and best wishes to his family.' NBA great and well-known Liverpool supporter LeBron James posted on X: 'My prayers goes out to his loved ones during this time! May you all be guided and protected! YNWA (You'll Never Walk Alone) JOTA!!' — Gary Neville (@GNev2) July 3, 2025 Manchester United defender Diogo Dalot, who shared a dressing room with Jota on international duty with Portugal, said on his Instagram story: ' strength to the family.' UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin said in a statement: 'Just three weeks ago, I had the honour of presenting Diogo Jota with a medal after the UEFA Nations League final – a moment of joy, pride, and celebration that will now forever be burned in memory with sorrow. 'His passion, energy and spirit on the field inspired everyone around him. It is devastating to think that a life so full of joy and potential has been taken far too soon. Rest in peace, dear Diogo. You will not be forgotten.'

Orlando Bloom shares cryptic post about 'loneliness' after Katy Perry split

Lord of the Rings star Orlando Bloom has shared a series of quotes. attributed to psychologist Carl Jung, following reports in recent weeks that he has split from Katy Perry Orlando Bloom has shared a series of cryptic quotes referring to "darkness" and "loneliness" following his reported split from his fiancée Katy Perry. The Pirates of the Caribbean actor, 48, and Katy, 40, have reportedly parted ways after nine years together. The couple, who are parents to four-year-old daughter Daisy, have faced speculation over their relationship in recent weeks, with there once even the suggestion of potential "make or break talks" in the future. ‌ Following yet more reports that they had separated, Pirates of the Caribbean star Orlando has shared a series of quotes, which aren't attributed to him, on Instagram. They featured in a post that he shared on his account yesterday. ‌ He shared a post by the account @sapienkind which focused on the late Carl Jung, who's considered the founder of analytical psychology. The post included more than a dozen quotes attributed to the psychologist. One quote included in the repost from Orlando was about loneliness. It read: "Loneliness does not come from having no people about one, but from being unable to communicate the things that seem important to oneself." Whilst another of those featured in the post focused on love and power. That quote read: "Where love rules, there is no will to power, and where power predominates, love is lacking. The one is the shadow of the other." "Even a happy life cannot be without a measure of darkness, and the word happy would lose its meaning if it were not balanced by sadness," one quote read. Whilst another read: "Know all the theories, master all the techniques, but as you touch a human soul, be just another human soul." Orlando later shared his post on his Instagram Story. He went on to highlight some of the quotes in particular, including specifically sharing the loneliness comment and the one that had referenced touching the human soul. ‌ He also highlighted another quote on there. The third quote from the post that he shared on its own through his Instagram Story yesterday read: "We are not what happened to us, we are what we choose to become." It comes after Orlando previously shared some quotes from other sources just days ago. As reported at the time, he posted a quote attributed to Buddha that read: "Each day is a new beginning. What we do today is what matters most." ‌ Amid ongoing speculation over his relationship with singer-songwriter Katy, it's been reported that they are "amicable". A source told US Weekly for an article that was published last week: "It's not contentious at the moment." The source claimed that the apparent separation has been "a long time coming," adding that things between them have been "tense" for months. They said that Katy is "of course upset" but "relived" to not have a second divorce ahead of her.

Diogo Jota: League-winning Liverpool forward was a dedicated family man

His two young sons and baby daughter, born only in November, were by his side as he celebrated Liverpool's Premier League title win in May. On June 22 he married his girlfriend Rute Cardoso in Portugal, describing it on social media as a 'day we will never forget'. The day before his death, in what would be his final Instagram post, he shared his wedding video with fans. A post shared by Diogo Jota (@diogoj_18) His bride said of the day that her 'dream came true', and that she had said 'yes to forever'. Born in the Portuguese city of Porto in 1996, Jota grew up in Gondomar, and his parents Joaquim and Isabel were still paying for him to play for the local club until the age of 16. He joined Paços de Ferreira's youth setup in 2013 and three years later signed a five-year contract with Atletico Madrid. He was a key player in Wolverhampton Wanderers' promotion to the Premier League after he signed for them on a one-season loan in 2017/18. Jota then joined Wolves permanently in 2018 and impressed in the Premier League over the next two seasons, leading to Liverpool buying him in September 2020 for a fee of more than £40 million. When he joined Jurgen Klopp's league-winning squad, the number 20 became an important part of the team. Jota struggled with injuries at Liverpool, missing 99 games for club and country during his time at Anfield because of muscular problems, a knee ligament tear and calf issues. Playing in the Premier League, and helping Liverpool to the trophy this season, was something he could 'not even dream' of when he was a child, he said. A post shared by Diogo Jota (@diogoj_18) He scored six goals in 26 appearances in the 2024/25 season. Jota told last month: 'It is a remarkable achievement for a small guy that came from Gondomar, where I had this dream. To arrive at this moment was outstanding. 'It's massive. It's something I could not even dream when I was a kid. I wanted to play in the Premier League but I didn't even imagine to win it, I just wanted to be there playing. I knew it was the best league in the world.' As he began to establish himself at the club after sustaining a knee injury in 2020, he also became father to his first son, Dinis. Cardoso moved with him to Liverpool and later took their son to games at Anfield, sporting a 'Dinis 20' shirt. Jota scored 21 goals in all competitions during the 2021-22 season for Liverpool and at the beginning of the following season extended his time at the club by signing a new contract. Liverpool Football Club are devastated by the tragic passing of Diogo Jota. — Liverpool FC (@LFC) July 3, 2025 Meanwhile, Cardoso, 28, was pregnant with their second child, a son named Duarte. Jota, whose real name is Diogo Silva, chose the surname to distinguish himself from other players of the same name when he began training as a youngster. Cardoso has posted pictures of the 'Cardoso-Silva' family on Instagram, also showing the three beagles they have. He scored 15 goals in the 2023/24 season, despite being struck by injuries once again, suffering a hamstring injury and later having issues in one of his calves. Jota regularly posted images of his family on his Instagram, sharing their sunny holidays and Christmas photoshoots in matching pyjamas. He proposed to Cardoso in 2022 after almost 10 years together. Their daughter was born in November 2024. Jota died alongside his brother, Andre Silva, also a professional footballer, who played for Penafiel. The two men died after the car in which they were travelling crashed in Zamora, Spain, in the early hours of Thursday. Liverpool said they were 'devastated' at the 'unimaginable loss'.
