Ipsos poll: AI optimism rises in Malaysia, yet six in 10 fear losing jobs to machines

Malay Mail4 days ago

KUALA LUMPUR, June 24 — More Malaysians believe artificial intelligence (AI) could improve their jobs, but growing fears about job loss cast a long shadow.
According to the Ipsos AI Monitor 2025, 54 per cent of Malaysians now think AI will enhance their jobs in the next three to five years, up from 39 per cent in 2024.
This signals growing confidence in AI's workplace potential, especially in Southeast Asia where support is higher than the global average.
But the same survey found that 63 per cent of Malaysians fear AI could replace their current job within that same timeframe.
This puts Malaysia among the countries with the highest levels of job-related anxiety linked to AI, behind only Thailand and Indonesia.
At the same time, 55 per cent of Malaysian respondents said AI makes them feel nervous, up from 50 per cent last year.
The data suggest Malaysians are increasingly aware of AI's double-edged impact — boosting efficiency on one hand, and threatening job security on the other.
Despite these fears, public trust in government oversight remains strong, with 73 per cent saying they trust Putrajaya to regulate AI use responsibly.
'This presents a crucial opportunity for Malaysia to strike a balanced path — embracing innovation while safeguarding public trust and workforce resilience,' said Ganesan Periakarruppan, the principal of Ipsos Strategy3 at Ipsos Malaysia.
'This is in line with the various initiatives and efforts carried out by the government to capitalize on AI as an economic growth catalyst while improving public service and ensuring responsible AI development.'
This trust far exceeds that found in developed countries such as Japan and the United States.
Experts say that managing this anxiety while encouraging AI adoption will be key to Malaysia's success in the digital economy.
Ipsos said Malaysians also believe AI has already made a difference, with 75 per cent saying it has changed their daily lives in the past few years.
The survey involved 500 Malaysian adults between March 21 and April 4, and forms part of a wider global poll.

UK eyes chip link-up with Malaysia in high-tech trade drive, says new high commissioner

KUALA LUMPUR, June 29 — The United Kingdom's new High Commissioner to Malaysia, Ajay Sharma, has made strengthening bilateral cooperation a key priority, with a particular focus on the fast-growing semiconductor sector and the development of integrated chip design and advanced manufacturing. He said the British government is keen to strengthen linkages and exchange ideas to increase the value chain in both countries in the semiconductor industry and the manufacture of high-end chips. This aligns with Malaysia's ambitions under the National Semiconductor Strategy (NSS) to transition from outsourced semiconductor assembly and testing to high-end manufacturing and niche capabilities such as integrated circuit design. 'We have seen a Malaysian company invest in a new compound semiconductor facility in Wales,' he said, referring to SMD Semiconductor, a Sarawak state-owned firm that recently opened a research and development innovation hub in Newport, an industrial port city in Wales. 'Therefore, I really want to work with Malaysia on the semiconductor industry. Malaysia is already involved in different parts of the value chain, and we can complement and learn from each other,' he told Bernama after appearing on Bernama TV's 'The Nation' programme recently. Sharma, who succeeded Ailsa Terry CMG, previously served in Iran, Qatar, Turkey, Moscow and Paris. He also sees potential for a UK-Malaysia partnership in offering specialised courses on semiconductors and chip design in British universities, where a significant number of Malaysian students pursue higher education. Malaysia has huge potential in clean energy 'We can also collaborate with local universities to bring Malaysian talent to the UK and set up courses here. Then we could see these courses develop and expand to Malaysia as well,' he said. He also highlighted clean energy as an area for increased bilateral cooperation, in which Malaysia has immense potential and where Britain could play a supporting role. 'Malaysia has huge natural resources, immense opportunities in clean energy and is working on significant development on carbon capture, green tech and energy transition. Malaysia also has creative and innovative technologies which can be used in our universities, labs and expanded into businesses. 'This interests me to try to get more investments from both countries in this sector as well,' said Sharma. Sharma said he is keen to boost two-way investments, especially Malaysian investments in the UK, citing successful ventures such as the Battersea Power Station redevelopment, YTL's Brabazon project in Bristol, and contributions in sectors ranging from water utilities like Wessex Water to power generation. At the same time, he aims to raise awareness among UK companies about business opportunities in Malaysia. 'Companies in the UK do not know much about the opportunities here in Malaysia, and we need to raise the profile to generate business interest. 'So, that is a key area that I would like to fix under my leadership,' said Sharma, who stressed this is even more important with Malaysia being a key market for economic growth in the ASEAN region. CPTPP trade process must be as simple as possible With UK-Malaysia trade worth six billion pounds (about RM34.8billion), the potential for increased trade is huge. 'We should be doing much more in many areas, such as tech development, which affects everything from healthcare to life sciences to defence manufacturing. We need to work on these and not be limited to areas we have focused on in the past,' said Sharma. He said the UK expects vast new opportunities following its accession to the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) on December 15 last year, becoming the first European nation to join the pact. The CPTPP now includes Australia, Brunei, Canada, Chile, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Peru, Singapore, the United Kingdom and Vietnam. With a combined population of 580 million and accounting for 15.6 per cent of global gross domestic product, the CPTPP is the world's fourth-largest free trade bloc. Sharma noted that the global trading system is under considerable strain, with questions raised about the World Trade Organisation's ability to manage challenges, even before the protectionist measures introduced by the United States. 'We really need to find ways to ensure cooperation between our countries to support free trade flows and growth, which is the main reason we were keen to join the CPTPP. 'We must ensure the trade administration process is as simple as possible. I wouldn't want people to miss out on a great trade arrangement simply because the process for applying for exemptions, etc, is too complicated or too onerous,' he said. The UK government, he added, is working closely with businesses to help them take full advantage of the CPTPP, including through cost savings and improved market access. 'As a government, we are working with businesses to make sure they take advantage of these (CPTPP) opportunities,' he said. — Bernama

Ex-programme manager in Penang loses RM436,000 in fake IPO scam promoted on WhatsApp, police tracking syndicate

GEORGE TOWN, June 29 — A 62-year-old retired airline programme manager recently lost RM436,000 of her life savings after falling victim to an online investment scam involving fake initial public offering (IPO). Penang Deputy Police Chief Datuk Mohd Alwi Zainal Abidin said the woman lodged a report with the Timur Laut Commercial Crime Investigation Division after discovering she had been deceived by a fraudulent scheme. The scam was promoted through a WhatsApp group called 'enspire capital', which promised high-returns through IPO investments. The victim was instructed to download an app named 'freeman plus' as the investment platform. 'Between May 12 and June 2, she made 56 fund transfers to four different company accounts. Despite the promises, she received no returns. Instead, the suspects kept requesting additional payments,' he said in a statement last night. Investigations found the victim used her personal and Employees Provident Fund (EPF) savings to finance the so-called investments. Mohd Alwi said efforts are ongoing to identify and track down the syndicate responsible. The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating. — Bernama

Bursa eyes the upside next week, cautious bulls watch for breakout past 1,530

KUALA LUMPUR, June 29 — Bursa Malaysia is expected to trade in cautious mode next week, but with an upside bias amid a constructive backdrop, as investors shift their focus away from the Middle East risks, an analyst said. SPI Asset Management managing partner Stephen Innes believed investors will concentrate on assessing upcoming macroeconomic data releases while awaiting the deadline for the United States' reciprocal tariff pause. 'That said, the chances of an extension to the deadline are increasing given recent geopolitical distractions,' he told Bernama, adding that market sentiment could also be supported by the possibility of a Federal Reserve rate cut at its July meeting. Meanwhile, Rakuten Trade Sdn Bhd equity research vice-president Thong Pak Leng maintains a cautiously optimistic view on the FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI's (FBM KLCI) near-term outlook, as the index shows signs of upward momentum. 'We believe that a breakout above the 1,530 level, supported by strong trading volume and sustained price action, would be a constructive signal that the market is ready to stage the next leg of its rally,' he said. For the upcoming week, Thong believes that market attention will focus on several key macroeconomic releases, both locally and internationally. 'In the near term, we anticipate the FBM KLCI to trade within a range of 1,510 to 1,540,' he added. On a weekly basis, the barometer index advanced 25.42 points to 1,528.16 from 1,502.74 in the preceding week. The FBM Emas Index expanded 169.81 points to 11,398.80, the FBMT 100 Index 165.91 points to 11,181.36, and the FBM Emas Shariah Index garnered 139.79 points to 11,341.13. The FBM 70 Index climbed 152.91 points to 16,270.66 and the FBM ACE Index rose 73.91 points to 4,474.76. Across sectors, the Financial Services Index jumped 268.72 points to 17,737.10, the Plantation Index surged 108.50 points to 7,329.02, the Healthcare Index edged up 17.70 points to 1,709.59, and the Industrial Products and Services Index perked up 4.71 points to 151.98. However, the Energy Index declined by 3.03 points to 732.68. Turnover for the shortened trading week narrowed to 11.68 billion units worth RM8.45 billion from 13.72 billion units worth RM10.84 billion in the preceding week. The Main Market volume dropped to 5.40 billion units valued at RM7.39 billion against 6.29 billion units valued at RM9.63 billion previously. Warrants turnover tumbled to 4.96 billion units worth RM655.61 million versus 6.16 billion units worth RM845.61 million a week ago. The ACE Market volume slipped to 1.07 billion units valued at RM399.48 million compared with 1.25 billion units valued at RM361.21 million a week earlier. — Bernama
