USC Football: 2025 Trojans Season Preview and Prediction
Lincoln Riley's fourth season at USC and second in the Big Ten is critical for a program that hasn't tasted the College Football Playoff. Riley likes the development of both lines and quarterback Jayden Maiava's potential with potentially elite wideouts in Lemon and Lane. After going 1-4 on the road in 2024, USC faces difficult trips to Oregon, Notre Dame, Illinois and Nebraska. The Trojans also must fare better in close games.

USC 2025 Season Preview and Prediction
Previewing USC's Offense for 2025
Head coach Lincoln Riley wants to build at the line of scrimmage and has an offensive front with several homegrown prospects (Elijah Paige, Alani Noa) mixed with transfers (J'Onre Reed, DJ Wingfield). Paige earned Freshman All-America honors in 2024, while Wingfield's versatility and intelligence have stood out to Riley.

Quarterback Jayden Maiava went 3-1 after replacing Miller Moss and went through the offseason as the clear-cut starter. Riley saw 'a lot of tremendous plays' from Maiava in 2024 and now wants to see the junior balance aggressiveness with ball security.
He will have two gifted targets in junior wide receivers Makai Lemon (764 receiving yards) and Ja'Kobi Lane (12 touchdowns). Boise State transfer Prince Strachan will also be part of the wideout rotation. Lake McRee once again leads the tight ends.
After two successful SEC transfers at running back (MarShawn Lloyd, Woody Marks), USC turns to one of its own in Bryan Jackson, who shined in the bowl win against Texas A&M. New Mexico transfer Eli Sanders and junior-college transfer Waymond Jordan round out the group.

Previewing USC's Defense for 2025
USC has gotten much bigger along the line, which Riley expects to be a team strength. There's a good veteran core in Devan Thompkins, Braylan Shelby and Anthony Lucas, intriguing transfers like Keeshawn Silver and a splashy recruit in Jahkeem Stewart. 'Across the board, interior, on the edge, the size, the strength, just the quality of depth and competition, you definitely feel that,' Riley says.

Eric Gentry returns to lead the linebackers after concussions forced him to redshirt in 2024. First-year linebackers coach Rob Ryan will oversee a group that includes promising sophomore Desman Stephens II.
The secondary has some question marks outside of safety Kamari Ramsey, but transfers DJ Harvey (San José State) and Bishop Fitzgerald (NC State) will be factors.

Previewing USC's Specialists for 2025
USC will have a new kicker in Caden Chittenden, a Freshman All-American at UNLV, and a new punter in Sam Johnson, who replaces Ray Guy Award winner Eddie Czaplicki. Lemon handled kickoff returns in 2024 and might take over punt returns.

Saniyah Hall commits to USC, Trojans land 3rd No. 1 prospect in past 4 women's basketball recruiting classes
USC women's basketball head coach Lindsay Gottlieb has received a commitment from another No. 1 prospect, the third top recruit to pledge to her program in the past four cycles, according to ESPN. Saniyah Hall, a 6-foot-2 forward who now plays for SPIRE Academy in Ohio, announced her commitment to USC Friday on ESPN's "NBA Today." "I would just say it felt like home," Hall said following her official visit to USC. "I loved all of my teammates. The girls there are so fun to be around. The coaches ... have high support, but [Gottlieb] is definitely there to just support me, and I've built a relationship with her — she's a great coach." Last week, Hall helped Team USA win gold at the U19 Women's World Cup. She earned tournament MVP honors after averaging 19.9 points, 6.4 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 2.9 steals per games while shooting 52.6% from the field and 39.3% from 3. Hall has transferred back to her home state for her final season, but last year she played her junior season at Montverde Academy in Florida. Hall picked USC over North Carolina and UCLA. She's following in the footsteps of Trojans guards JuJu Watkins and Jazzy Davidson, who were rated by ESPN as No. 1 prospects in the 2023 and 2025 recruiting classes, respectively, before committing to USC. Although Watkins suffered a season-ending ACL tear in USC's second-round NCAA tournament game against Mississippi State, she swept the major National Player of the Year awards this year as a sophomore. Additionally, she collected first-team All-American honors for the second year in a row after averaging 23.9 points, 6.8 rebounds, 3.4 assists, 2.2 steals and 1.8 blocks per game. USC, which has made back-to-back Elite 8s as a 1-seed, is adding to Davidson to the fold for the 2025-26 season. She rounded out her Clackamas High School career as the 2024-25 Gatorade Oregon Girls Basketball Player of the Year, averaging 29.3 points, 8.7 rebounds, 3.3 steals, 2.6 assists and 1.9 blocks per game as a senior. While the Trojans will have to wait for Watkins to fully recover, their 2026-27 roster is shaping up to be spectacular, perhaps fit to end the program's four-plus-decade national title drought.

Cubs' Taillon, Assad nearing returns to depleted staff as trade deadline approaches
CHICAGO (AP) — The Chicago Cubs line up as one of the prospective buyers, especially for pitching, as baseball's July 31 trade deadline approaches. In the meantime, Chicago — which entered Friday at 60-42 and a game behind first-place Milwaukee in the NL Central — is inching closer to having some injured pitchers return. On Friday before a game against the White Sox at Rate Field, Cubs manager Craig Counsell said starter Jameson Taillon, out since July 1 with a right calf strain, is expected begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Iowa next week. The big right-hander threw a 47-pitch bullpen session Friday. Taillon is set to toss to live hitters in Milwaukee early next week and then report to the Cubs' top affiliate. Taillon is 7-6 with a 4.44 ERA and was mainstay in the Chicago's rotation despite some ups and downs in his ninth major league season. The 33-year-old lost his final three straight games, with a 10.66 ERA in that span, after winning five in a row. Taillon's injury opened a second gap in a Chicago rotation that already was thinned when ace left-hander Justin Steele's made only four starts before needing season-ending elbow surgery. Right-hander Javier Assad also is expected to join Iowa next week. Assad has not pitched this season due to a left oblique strain, but was 7-6 with a 3.73 ERA in 29 starts last season. Righty Porter Hodge, out since July 8 with right shoulder impingement, is scheduled to pitch for Iowa on Saturday. Hodge is 2-1 with a 6.85 ERA in 26 relief appearances this season. Catcher Miguel Amaya, recovering from a left oblique strain, also is expected to join Iowa next week. He's batting .280 with four homers and 25 RBIs in 29 games this season, but hasn't played since May 24. ___ AP MLB: Matt Carlson, The Associated Press
