Great at coding, yet stuck with old thinking: Is India wasting its 'economic supremacy' potential? Akshat Shrivastava explains

Time of India4 days ago
India may have some of the world's best engineering minds, but true technological dominance remains a distant goal. Financial educator and entrepreneur Akshat Shrivastava has drawn attention to the widening gap between India's potential and its current trajectory, attributing the stagnation not to a lack of talent, but to systemic misalignments.
Historical Patterns of Power and Technology
In a post shared on social media platform X, Shrivastava highlighted that throughout history, civilizations that led in technology also held economic power. Citing examples from Mesopotamia and Rome to modern giants like the US and China, he emphasized that tech dominance has consistently paved the way for economic supremacy. The pattern is clear, he noted—nations that invest in and embrace innovation inevitably shape global influence.
India's Untapped Talent Pool
Despite having a highly skilled engineering workforce, India has not yet translated its talent into global tech leadership. Shrivastava suggested that while the nation takes pride in its technical graduates and innovation hubs, there remains a visible hesitation toward emerging technologies. As an example, he pointed out that mainstream attitudes toward blockchain and cryptocurrency remain skeptical, with many still dismissing these sectors as unstable or speculative.

Cultural and Structural Challenges
Beyond just technology adoption, Shrivastava criticized certain old societal trends that, in his view, reflect a lack of scientific temperament. He expressed concern over the growing acceptance of pseudoscience, gambling, and astrology, suggesting these are signs of regression rather than progress. He also referenced India's reluctance to fully embrace app-based services, contrasting it with the country's ongoing reliance on traditional systems like local taxi unions.
Misaligned Incentives at the Core
The real hurdle, Shrivastava argued, lies in the incentives that drive political and economic decisions. According to him, while economic growth rewards forward-looking, tech-driven planning, politics often favors short-term populist moves that do not necessarily align with long-term innovation goals. This divergence, he said, is what holds India back from achieving true tech supremacy.
Shrivastava's reflections come at a time when India is trying to position itself as a global tech hub, yet faces challenges in execution and policy alignment.

'I think of Roblox as a platform to help loneliness': CEO suggests Roblox could become a dating space for adults

Image via:In a bizarre and surprisingly controversial twist, Roblox CEO David Baszucki has presented a vision for the beloved online game's future, one that potentially positions it as a destination for grown-up romance and online dating. Speaking on the TechStuff podcast, Baszucki doubled down on his vision of Roblox fighting what he called a 'loneliness epidemic' by enabling consenting adults to connect in safe, immersive virtual experiences. His statement, 'I think of Roblox as a platform to help loneliness,' has attracted both interest and controversy. From Kids' Playground to Adult Matchmaking? Historically viewed as a haven for younger users, Roblox's reputation as an online sandbox is fundamentally tied to its extensive library of games and user content. The company has been quietly transforming that image since June 2023, when it launched a mature rating for experiences that contain romance, alcohol and even extreme violence, available only to verified adults. Now, Baszucki is propelling the platform even deeper into adult-land. He imagines a Roblox where grownups go to virtual movie nights, concerts, and mixers for dating and making new connections. Roblox Still wants to Allow Online Dating... Thousands of adults will first meet in Roblox dating experiences and then meet in real life, Baszucki had already proclaimed in a 2024 keynote. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like An engineer reveals: One simple trick to get internet without a subscription Techno Mag Learn More Undo His latest remarks just cement the firm's plans to turn this into reality. Virtual Dates, Actual Connections? Baszucki thinks the concept might particularly resonate with daters who are reluctant. A lot of people who are too afraid to go on a real-life date might find it easier', he observed. This strategy, he contends, could lull users into relationships that would eventually transition into real-life alliances. roblox, don't do this... Roblox having adult dating experiences is a bold concept, to say the least and not without some controversy. The platform's bread and butter has been younger players for years, making many doubt whether this shift can be accomplished responsibly and well. As Roblox grows up, one thing's certain, Baszucki envisions more than just pixels and play. He envisions digital dating, connection and perhaps even love. PU to shift out of historic bldg after nearly a century

1 2 3 Patna: Patna University (PU), established in 1917, is set to bid farewell to its iconic administrative building on Ashok Rajpath and relocate to a new G+8 storey complex under construction at Krishna Ghat. Simultaneously, around 18 postgraduate departments under the faculties of humanities and social sciences will shift from the 70-year-old Darbhanga House to a new G+9 academic block adjacent to the administrative complex. Both the administrative and academic buildings, being constructed by the Bihar State Educational Infrastructural Development Corporation (BSEIDC) at a cost of Rs 139 crore, are nearing completion and are expected to be handed over to PU shortly. "The PU office and all PG departments located at Darbhanga House will be shifted to their new buildings by Dec this year," PU engineer Sachin Dayal said. PU's office has had a nomadic history since its inception. For the first five years, it operated from a wing of the then newly built Patna High Court. From 1922, it functioned out of offices near Golghar vacated by the Board of Revenue. In 1928, during the vice-chancellorship of Sir Sultan Ahmad, the university finally moved into its own building on Ashok Rajpath. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Hamburg: GEERS sucht 700 Testhörer für Hörgeräte ohne Zuzahlung GEERS Undo Now, 98 years later, it prepares for another major relocation. Darbhanga House, a former palace built in 1901 on a 15-acre plot, became the home of PU's humanities and social sciences postgraduate departments in 1955. It was handed over to the university by the erstwhile Maharaja of Darbhanga for Rs 7 lakh. The building, with its carpeted wooden staircases, ornamental carved friezes, covered verandas and terraces, has seen only minor alterations since. It was renovated by BSEIDC around a decade ago. However, the structure has long struggled to accommodate the growing number of students enrolled in various courses. "With the considerable increase in the number of students in different courses, the classroom accommodation at Darbhanga House was proving too short for the conduct of smooth academic pursuits. Hence, another academic block was constructed for PU," said development officer Khagendra Kumar. The new G+9 academic block will feature a cafeteria on the ground floor and two departments per upper floor on average. It will also include a library and a dedicated reading room. Once vacated, Darbhanga House is likely to be taken over by Vanijya Mahavidyalaya. The administrative building will accommodate the general, establishment, registration and other essential university departments. It will also house the offices of the vice-chancellor, pro-vice-chancellor, the syndicate, the academic council and a conference hall, the development officer added.
