CHATEAUROUX, France - Tadej Pogacar's Tour de France hopes suffered a blow on Sunday as the Slovenian's key domestique Joao Almeida withdrew following a crash on Friday.
Almeida, 26, who finished fourth in the general classification last year, abandoned after 89km of stage nine, two days after fracturing a rib in a spectacular high-speed crash.
The Portuguese rider had come into the race in brilliant form having won the Tour de Suisse, the Tour of the Basque Country and the Tour de Romandie earlier this year.
"We are really sad that we lost Joao (Almeida) today," Pogacar told reporters on Sunday. "I think it was just too much. I was suffering today on the bike... I cannot imagine him with all the pain, it must be really, really painful."
"It's a really big loss. Joao was in a super great shape."
Three-time Tour champion Pogacar lamented his teammate's withdrawal a day before the race enters the Massif Central with 4,450 metres of climbing awaiting the peloton on Monday.
"It was a luxury to have him in the GC (general classification), he could also do a great result for himself here in the Tour," Pogacar said.

EPA/GEORGIOS KEFALAS EDITORIAL USE ONLY BASEL, Switzerland – Pedestrians in host cities Basel and Lucerne are being greeted with female football-themed pedestrian walk lights, in celebration of the Women's European Championship in Switzerland. Pedestrian lights near the stadiums and fan zones of the cities, two of the eight tournament hosts, have replaced some of the green silhouettes of a walking person with a pony-tailed woman with a ball at her feet. 'It's a great idea, especially for the women,' said Linda van Stokkum of the Netherlands, who was walking to Basel's Euro 2025 fan zone. 'I think Switzerland make it well organised and yeah, it's a good sign.' German tourist Malte Wendt is a fan of the change. 'To turn the traffic lights to women for the Euros is a pretty cool idea,' he said. 'I love it, actually.' During the men's Euro 2024 in Germany, host city Frankfurt modified their pedestrian lights to feature a green player kicking a ball, and a red referee showing a red card. England move closer to victory at Lord's
Find out what's new on ST website and app. Cricket - International Test Match Series - Third Test - England v India - Lord's Cricket Ground, London, Britain - July 14, 2025 England's Chris Woakes celebrates after taking the wicket of India's Nitish Kumar Reddy Action Images via Reuters/Peter Cziborra LONDON - England claimed four wickets to close on a famous win with India struggling on 112-8, still 80 runs behind the hosts at lunch on a tense final day of an enthralling third test at Lord's on Monday. Jofra Archer bowled Rishabh Pant, Ben Stokes trapped KL Rahul lbw and Archer brilliantly caught and bowled Washington Sundar to leave India reeling at 84-7. Ravindra Jadeja (17 not out) and Nitish Kumar Reddy (13) defended stubbornly, however, before Chris Woakes had the latter caught by wicketkeeper Jamie Smith just before the interval. Pant played an extraordinary one-handed straight drive for four off Archer to move to nine, but the fast bowler responded two balls later with an excellent delivery which uprooted his off stump. Stokes snared KL Rahul lbw for 39, the England captain dropping to his knees and imploring the umpire to give him out. He refused to do so but England called for a review and the decision was overturned to huge cheers from the crowd. Washington Sundar was next to fall for a duck, Archer leaping to his right to take a superb one-handed catch off his own bowling and reduce India to 84-7. Top stories Swipe. Select. Stay informed. Heartbreaking Stage 9 finish for Van der Poel as his challenge fades in final moments of the race
Photo: FRANCE: Mathieu van der Poel led the race almost all the way through Stage 9 of the Tour de France, but in the last 700 metres, his breakaway with teammate Jonas Rickaert faltered, leaving him without a win. Rickaert began to get away with only 6 kilometres remaining, and it left Van der Poel to battle for the stage win alone. Van der Poel, who recently secured a victory in Boulogne-sur-Mer, fought hard until the very end, setting up an exciting sprint finish for the peloton. Although Van der Poel had a 30-second lead, the peloton kept up with him. As he got closer to the finish line, he was still in front but only by a little, as the main group was too fast. In the end, Van der Poel was caught just before the finish. Tim Merlier from Soudal-QuickStep won the sprint. Van der Poel and his teammate Jasper Philipsen had already won both stages during the weekend. However, winning the third stage was just too hard. After the stage, Rickaert shared that his goal was to stand on the Tour de France podium. He had discussed this with Van der Poel before the race. With this, he stated: 'I always wanted to be on the Tour podium, so I made a joke of it that we'd go with two from the start, but it seems he was serious, so we just continued, and I was slowly dying. We tried, and too bad that we didn't succeed.' He added: 'I think we did [put on a show]. I think every sports director who passed me gave the thumbs up, so it seems like we did a good effort.' Van der Poel then confirmed that their strategy was to support Rickaert in securing his goal. He admitted, ' I discussed with Jonas that we wanted to go for it today. His dream is to be on the Tour de France podium, so I was happy to help him get combativity. I hope they give it to him.' 'I'm really happy. That was one of his dreams. In the end, we came really close, but I think we were both just on the limit. It was a very hard day… The roads were not really helping with two riders in front, and of course, with the wind, we knew the GC teams would come back at certain moments. It's hard to not be able to finish it off, but we put on a good show today,' the athlete said. On social media, Rickaert expressed: 'What a day. What a ride. Thank you @mathieuvanderpoel for being part of this. Thank you @alpecindeceuninck for the opportunity. This means so much to me. Too bad we missed the win in the end, but we can be proud of what we did.' Netizens commented on the post and said: 'Seeing you riding in the front for MVDP is crazy my friend, but today made history and we are proud of you both despite not winning. 👏,' 'An incredible power, bravo guys, you are legends, you have officially gone down in history.🙏🤩👏', and 'Nice try men! What a stage!!! 🔥🔥👏👏👏👏.'
