Weather update: Cold weather to grapple Gauteng and three other provinces
Gauteng, the North West, Mpumalanga, and Limpopo will experience freezing temperatures as cold air is expected to move across the country starting Monday. According to the South African Weather Service (SAWS), most areas in the province will remain clear initially, but significant changes are anticipated from midweek. Cool and sunny conditions are expected in many northern locations throughout the week. In Pretoria, Monday will bring cooler weather, with a minimum temperature of 4°C and a high of 15°C with clear sunny conditions. In Johannesburg, temperatures will drop to a low of 3°C, rising to 13°C by midday before cooling again in the evening. On Tuesday, temperatures are expected to rise slightly, reaching a maximum of 14°C in Johannesburg with no rainfall predicted. From Wednesday onward, temperatures in Gauteng are expected to improve, potentially signalling the end of winter as we approach August. Fine weather will continue in the northern parts of the country next week, including Limpopo and Mpumalanga, where it will remain warm. The SA Weather Service encourages the public to stay updated with the latest forecasts and warnings as conditions evolve throughout the week. KwaZulu-Natal coastal damaging waves warnings remain in place
KwaZulu-Natal will see warm and partly cloudy weather along the coast on Saturday, while inland areas remain cooler and unsettled. Forecaster Joel Guy confirmed the weather service still has a warning in place for damaging waves. 'We still have that warning for damaging waves along the KwaZulu-Natal coastal areas,' said Guy. Coastal towns like Durban and Richards Bay are expected to start the day with minimums in the mid-teens and remain mostly dry during the day. While the coast is milder, the interior will wake to cold temperatures. Pietermaritzburg and surrounding towns could see minimums as low as 6°C. 'It's freezing for Bethlehem, and also quite cold in Pietermaritzburg and Kokstad,' said Guy. Isolated thundershowers may develop in the afternoon, particularly over the western interior. The South Coast and adjacent inland regions face a 30% to 60% chance of rain. As the day progresses, conditions will become increasingly cloudy across the eastern half of the KwaZulu-Natal. However, Guy noted that it would 'stay fine for much of the day' before thundershowers appear late afternoon and early evening. Temperatures are expected to rise to the low 20s in coastal cities, while inland highs may struggle to surpass the mid-teens. Wet conditions set to grip Gauteng
Gauteng residents should prepare for a drop in temperatures and scattered showers starting this evening and continuing into tomorrow. Weather forecasts indicate that the province will experience cloudy skies and isolated rainfall, with chilly overnight temperatures expected across the region. Residents of Johannesburg can expect the mercury to dip to around 7°C overnight, while Pretoria will remain only slightly warmer with a low of 8°C. Tomorrow's maximum temperatures will range between 21°C in Johannesburg and 22°C in Pretoria, offering a cool but manageable day ahead. 'We're expecting isolated showers over Gauteng starting this evening and persisting into tomorrow,' said Odirile Modipa, a weather forecaster. Alongside the showers, Gauteng will experience mostly cloudy skies, particularly in the morning. By the afternoon, conditions may begin to clear in some areas, but forecasters urge residents to keep warm and remain cautious on wet roads. The central interior, including parts of the Free State and North West, is also forecast to receive isolated rainfall. The light precipitation forms part of a system sweeping from the Western Cape and extending into the Eastern Cape, with snowfall expected over higher-lying mountainous areas in Lesotho and surrounding regions. While Gauteng won't see snow, the overall weather system contributes to the colder-than-usual conditions for this time of year. As the weather system moves inland, it brings a pattern of cold winds and cloudy skies. While the worst of the disruptive weather is expected elsewhere, the continued moisture in the atmosphere means Gauteng could see passing drizzle even after the main showers move through.
