Norris puts McLaren on pole in Austria, Piastri third
SPIELBERG, Austria :Lando Norris bounced back from his collision in Canada to put McLaren on pole position for the Austrian Formula One Grand Prix on Saturday while championship-leading teammate Oscar Piastri qualified third.
Ferrari's Charles Leclerc joined Norris on the front row with teammate Lewis Hamilton fourth, raising the Italian team's hopes after a difficult weekend so far.
Red Bull's Max Verstappen qualified only seventh at his team's home circuit after pulling out of his final flying effort when Alpine's Pierre Gasly spun at the last corner and briefly brought out yellow flags.
Piastri was also forced to bale but had been slower than Norris in both of the first two phases.
Norris, who needs a strong result after a collision with Piastri in Canada two weeks ago, is 22 points behind the Australian in the championship after 10 of 24 races.
"I did what I planned to do and when I plan to do something and it goes right, it normally goes very, very well," said Norris.
"A good day and it has been a good weekend for me so far, so hopefully we can keep it up."
The pole was his third of the season and he won both of the previous two with fastest lap in Australia and Monaco.

George Russell, last year's race winner, qualified fifth for Mercedes but faced an investigation for a potential unsafe release in the pitlane.
Liam Lawson will line up sixth for Racing Bulls, ahead of Verstappen, with Brazilian rookie Gabriel Bortoleto making it into the final phase for the first time and qualifying eighth for Sauber.
Italian rookie Kimi Antonelli was ninth fastest for Mercedes and Gasly completed the top 10.
The second phase of qualifying was red-flagged when the trackside grass at turn 10 caught fire, the latest of a series of such incidents.
The governing FIA said the fire was caused by a car going off track, rather than by sparks from the titanium skid blocks, and carried out additional dampening of the grass before the final top 10 shootout.
Verstappen's teammate Yuki Tsunoda and Williams' Carlos Sainz made early exits, neither getting through the opening phase.
"There's damage in the car, for sure. The car is undriveable ... it's pulling under braking, no load in high speed," said Sainz, who qualified 19th with only Sauber's Nico Hulkenberg behind.
He explained later that the team had put new brakes on the car for qualifying, as usual, but it started pulling to one side immediately.

England deliver statement 7-0 win over Jamaica in final Euro warm-up
LEICESTER, England :England issued a statement of intent ahead of the Women's European Championship, demolishing Jamaica 7–0 at home in their final pre-tournament friendly on Sunday. The reigning European champions dominated from start to finish and although Jamaica had an equaliser ruled out for offside, Sarina Wiegman's side controlled the match, pushing to settle the game before halftime. Ella Toone opened the scoring, followed by a headed goal from Lucy Bronze, before Toone again scored deep into first-half stoppage time at Leicester's King Power Stadium. The onslaught continued after the interval, with Georgia Stanway adding England's fourth just before the hour mark, followed by Alessia Russo making it five in the 71st minute. With five minutes to go, Aggie Beever-Jones added the sixth before Beth Mead capped the rout with a seventh in the dying moments. "We enjoyed that game today. A lot of goals and a clean sheet. It's nice to send ourselves off to the Euros," Toone told ITV. "We've got a talented squad and we'll step out and give the nation our all." Wiegman said her side had produced a "good performance". "We expected to be in the final third a lot so we wanted to show what we could do," she said. "It was nice to score seven goals though there were times when we played an extra pass. Overall I'm really happy with the performance." England begin their Group D campaign against France on July 5, followed by games against Netherlands and Wales. The tournament runs from July 2-27.

Norris showed his character after Canada, says Stella
SPIELBERG, Austria - McLaren team principal Andrea Stella praised Lando Norris's character as the Briton bounced back from a collision and race retirement in Canada to lead home a McLaren one-two at the Austrian Grand Prix on Sunday. The Italian said Norris still needed "to polish a few things" to become the finished article, however, in a Formula One season that is turning into a two-horse drivers' title chase with team mate Oscar Piastri. Norris had to fend off the Australian to set up Sunday's victory two weeks after his clash with his team mate forced him out in Montreal. "The outcome (in Canada) was unfortunate because Lando could not finish the race. That was simply a misjudgement. The way Lando handled that, I think showed the character," said Stella. "The speed is there -- Lando pole position in Monaco... he was the faster car in Canada, pole position in Austria. "We just have to polish a few things in executions and results which is what Lando demonstrated today. So, very proud of Lando, very proud of how everyone handled the situation in Canada and the fact we end up united and stronger." The runaway constructors' championship leaders avoided another on-track accident, with Piastri delivering a mea culpa over team radio after the chequered flag following a near collision. "There was only one situation where the two cars ended up a little too close and that was in turn four when Oscar locked up and he ended up very close to Lando," said Stella. "We gave Oscar this feedback and I want to acknowledge that I am proud of Oscar. As soon as he crossed the finish line he went on the radio and he said sorry for the situation in turn four. "I am so refreshed by how the team reviewed the situation in Canada. We have come out stronger and even more united." Norris's win cut the gap to Piastri at the top of the drivers' standings to 15 points ahead of a home British race next weekend. Norris, seven times a race winner, has yet to take back-to-back wins in the same F1 season but Stella expects him to rectify that. "In terms of Lando being able to do so, yes, of course," he said. "There is absolutely no reason why not -- the talent, the quality, the race craft and even the trajectory Lando is in. "The most important thing is the back-to-back victory is for McLaren."
