King Harald and Crown Princess Mette-Marit of Norway Team Up to Host Former President Barack Obama
The former U.S. leader visited with King Harald V, the King's daughter-in-law Crown Princess Mette-Marit and Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre at the Bygdø Kongsgård royal summer estate in Bygdøyveien on Tuesday, May 13.
The visit came as Obama was in Norway for a lecture at the Oslo Spektrum on Monday, May 12. Moderated by Sofie Høgestøl, a podcaster and former member of Norwegian parliament, the discussion delved into 'some of the most pressing issues of our time, as well as his thoughts on the challenges facing the world's democracies in the future.'
Obama and King Harald were well acquainted during his time in office. The monarch presented the former president with the Nobel Peace Prize in 2009 for his efforts in international diplomacy.
The meeting came just over a year after King Harald reduced his royal duties following a lengthy sick leave and an operation to install a permanent pacemaker.
"The King will make adjustments to his program in the future, out of consideration for his age. This will entail a permanent reduction in the number and scope of activities in which the King participates," the Norwegian Royal House announced on April 22, 2024.
Princess Mette-Marit's husband, Crown Prince Haakon, is next in line to the throne and has assumed some royal duties due to his father's health limitations.
The couple married in 2001 and share two children, Princess Ingrid Alexandra, 21, and Prince Sverre Magnus, 19. Princess Ingrid is currently second in line to the throne thanks to Norway adopting absolute primogeniture in 1990, allowing for eldest female children to come before their brothers in the order of succession.
Though the King of Norway has had several health issues in recent years, including hospitalizations for infections in December 2022 and May 2023, he stated in January 2024 that he had no plans to abdicate.
The issue was top of mind after Queen Margrethe of Denmark voluntarily stepped down from the throne in January 2024.
'No, I don't really have it. I stand by what I have said all along. I have taken an oath to the Storting, and it lasts for life,' King Harald said at the time, referring to his promise to the Norwegian Parliament when he acceded at age 53 in 1991.

Trump has instead complained that he didn't get a 'thank you' from Gaza for sending money intended for food aid. But Leavitt's demand is in line with Trump's longtime grievance over the award. He's complained repeatedly about not getting one during his previous term in office, insisting that he should have had 'four or five' of them by now. And he really doesn't like that President Barack Obama was awarded one. Earlier this month, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he had nominated Trump for the honor in a move many observers believed was just a blatant attempt to curry favor. As a result, Leavitt's critics fired back with a number of facts about her boss. Some also noted that she seemed to pronounce 'Nobel' as 'noble,' which, ironically, is how Trump himself has spelled the name of the prize in the past. Gabbard Swipes at Obama's Response to Her MAGA Conspiracy
Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard hit back at former President Barack Obama after he dismissed her claim that his administration cooked up intelligence on Russian election interference in a 'treasonous conspiracy' against President Donald Trump. On July 17, Gabbard released a report alleging that Obama and his top national security officials conspired to 'manipulate' intelligence to link Trump to Russia's meddling in the 2016 election, calling for him and other officials to be prosecuted. Through a spokesperson, Obama issued a rare response dismissing her claims as 'a weak attempt at distraction' from the Jeffrey Epstein story. Gabbard went on the offensive on Fox & Friends. 'President Obama's very carefully worded response that came from his office, again, deflects away from addressing any of the truth that was revealed,' Gabbard said Saturday. 'They would have to admit and actually address the details of their complicity in this or their absolute failure in conducting the most basic responsibilities of, again, asking, where is this intelligence coming from?' Gabbard's allegations come as the president's supporters have revolted over a July 6 report from the Justice Department and Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) finding that discraced financier Jeffrey Epstein died by suicide while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges in 2019, rather than being murdered, and that no 'client list' of wealthy co-conspirators exists—conspiracies Trump has promoted and now fallen victim to. Obama's spokesperson, Patrick Rodenbush, said last week that the claims represented the 'constant nonsense and misinformation' that stemmed from the Trump administration. 'The bizarre allegations are ridiculous and a weak attempt at distraction. Nothing in the document issued last week undercuts the widely accepted conclusion that Russia worked to influence the 2016 presidential election but did not successfully manipulate any votes,' he said. 'These findings were affirmed in a 2020 report by the bipartisan Senate Intelligence Committee, led by then-Chairman Marco Rubio.' Rodenbush declined to comment on Gabbard's latest retort. Gabbard has described the Obama administration's intelligence findings as 'seditious' and 'treasonous,' releasing documents that she said prove Russia did not interfere with the 2016 election and that Obama officials relied too heavily on a dossier outlining Trump's ties to Russia. The Obama administration—and the first Trump administration—did not claim Russia changed any votes in 2016 but instead launched an influence campaign designed to sway voters to support Trump. Still, Gabbard has urged Attorney General Pam Bondi to investigate and charge government officials such as former FBI Director James Comey, former Central Intelligence Agency Director John Brennan, and Obama himself. Trump Melts Down in Unhinged Revenge Rant: ‘They Must Pay'
President Donald Trump is once again pushing the widely disputed claim that Barack Obama attempted to stage a 'coup' after the 2016 election, and insists those involved 'must pay.' In a flurry of posts on Truth Social, the president has returned to his familiar playbook of trying to distract his MAGA base from the ongoing fallout of the Epstein files by repeating unfounded accusations against Obama and former U.S. intelligence officials who concluded Russia interfered in the 2016 election. 'The Russia, Russia, Russia HOAX is now TOTALLY UNDISPUTED! THE FACTS ARE ALL THERE, IN BLACK AND WHITE,' Trump posted Friday morning. 'It is the biggest scandal in American History. The perpetrators of this CRIME must pay a big price. This can never be allowed to happen in our Country again!' He then shared a video from The Daily Signal featuring right-wing historian Victor Davis Hanson accusing Obama-era intelligence leaders of conspiring to 'destroy' Trump after his victory over Hillary Clinton. 'They must pay for the crime of the Century,' Trump added. The renewed attacks stem from claims made earlier this month by Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard, who cited newly declassified documents to allege a 'treasonous conspiracy' by Obama and senior national security officials to fabricate Russian election interference in order to undermine the legitimacy of the results. Gabbard alleged that Obama, as well as national security officials, engaged in a 'treasonous conspiracy' by manufacturing evidence of Russian interference at the 2016 election, and therefore trying to undermine the legitimacy of the results. Gabbard accused Obama and his team of trying to lay the groundwork for 'what was essentially a years-long coup against President Trump' while presenting misleading information. Gabbard's claims rely heavily on an apparent contradiction regarding U.S. intelligence findings in Jan. 2017 that Russia ran an influence campaign to help Trump in 2016 and separate unfounded claims that Moscow successfully manipulated votes in favor of the Republcian. However, the Obama administration never claimed Russia changed vote totals or hacked voting machines. In 2020, a report by the bipartisan Senate Intelligence Committee, which included the current Secretary of State Marco Rubio, also found that Russia had tried to help Trump's 2016 campaign. 'Nothing in the document issued last week undercuts the widely accepted conclusion that Russia worked to influence the 2016 presidential election but did not successfully manipulate any votes,' Obama's office said in response to Gabbard's allegations. Elsewhere, a number of Trump loyalists including Deputy White House Chief of Staff Dan Scavino have reacted with glee after declassified documents showed the FBI investigated intelligence reports alleging Clinton approved a plan to try and vilify Trump by linking him to Vladimir Putin ahead of the 2016 election. However, as noted by The New York Times, an annex to a 2023 report by Special Counsel John Durham suggests that this supposed approval from Clinton may have been out together by Russian spies. The Truth Social posts from Trump attacking Obama came as the president continues to dig himself deeper into the furore about what he knows about the crimes of Epstein, the billionaire pedophile who died in Aug. 2019. After years of claiming their friendship ended over a real estate dispute, Trump now says he cut ties with Epstein because the financier 'stole' young workers from Mar-a-Lago. 'He took people. I say, 'Don't do it anymore,' you know, they work for me,' Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One. 'He took some others. Once he did that, that was the end of him.' One of the women Trump alleged Epstein 'stole' from him was Virginia Giuffre, a sex trafficking victim of Epstein's who died via suicide in April.
