Woodbury County Board of Supervisors to discuss possible hiring freeze next week
A clerical error found on this week's agenda is pushing action back to next week. On Tuesday, the board had to table an official action on a possible 2026 hiring freeze. Supervisors say a freeze on hiring could save several hundred thousand dollars.
Sioux City residents speak out on proposed property tax levy
According to the board, an Iowa property tax bill signed into law back in 2023 continues to produce budget constraints.
'We understand that every decision we make could affect someone's personal budget, their homes, things they want to do with their children, providing things for their household,' board chair Dan Bittinger said. 'And we're taking all of that into consideration. It's very hard because we don't just see, at the end of the day, it's just a dollar. Our job per Iowa Code is to handle the budget and the finance for the county, and that's our job. However, we have to understand that every decision has a real-life implication.'
Supervisors also tabled a proposed funding request from the Siouxland Initiative because of budget constraints. Bittinger says that after supervisors approve the budget, the board could take another look at the request.
