João Pedro scores twice vs. boyhood team, Chelsea beats Fluminense 2-0 to reach Club World Cup final
A 23-year-old who had been at Fluminense from about age 10 until leaving for Watford in 2020, João Pedro scored in the 18th and 56th minutes and refused to celebrate either goal in a sign of respect for his former club. He
joined Chelsea from Brighton
on July 2.
Seeking its second world championship, Chelsea advanced to Sunday's title match against the winner of Wednesday's game between European champion Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid.
European teams will win their 12th straight Club World Cup title and 17th in 18 tries, the lone exception a 2012 victory by Brazil's Corinthians over Chelsea, which won in 2021.
Fluminense was initially awarded a first-half penalty kick but it was taken away in a video review.
Chelsea's Moisés Caicedo injured a leg in second-half stoppage time.
A crowd of 70,556 was 10-15% short of capacity at MetLife Stadium, where it was 93 degrees (34 Celsius) at kickoff with humidity that made it feel like 104 (40). FIFA cut ticket prices from $473.90 to $13.40 last week.
Chelsea went ahead after German Cano lost the ball to João Pedro, and he poked it to Pedro Neto, who dribbled down a flank and crossed. An attempted clearance went to João Pedro, who curled a 20-yard shot inside the far post. João Pedro took two steps to start to celebrate, then stopped and clasped his hands.
Chelsea doubled the lead after Facundo Bernal lost the ball just outside the Blues' penalty area to Pedro Neto, who poked the ball to Cole Palmer. He beat three challenges and dished off to Enzo Fernández, who side-footed a pass to João Pedro. He cut around Ignácio and scored off the underside of the crossbar.
Marc Cucurella cleared Hércules' shot off the line in the 27th and French referee François Letexier awarded a penalty kick in the 35th minute when René's free kick struck the left arm of defender Trevoh Chalobah. Letexier reversed his decision in a video review, concluding Chalobah's arm was in a natural position.
Key moment
Letexier reversing his PK decision at the recommendation of Colombian video assistant referee Nicolas Gallo.
Takeaways
Chelsea has earned $88,435,000 to $103,815,000 for reaching the final, the amount depending on a participation fee FIFA has not disclosed.

Arsenal signs midfielder Christian Norgaard from Brentford
Associated Press LONDON (AP) — Arsenal completed the signing of Christian Norgaard from Brentford on Thursday for a reported fee of up to 15 million pounds ($20 million). The 31-year-old Denmark international has signed a two-year contract with the option of a further 12 months. He is Arsenal's third signing of the offseason after midfielder Martin Zubimendi and goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga. Midfielder Norgaard spent six years at Brentford after spells at Fiorentina, Brondby and Hamburg. 'He has been a consistent high performer in the Premier League and brings many qualities to our club,' said Arsenal sporting director Andrea Berta. 'He is a leader, and a player with high tactical intelligence and versatility who will have a very positive impact to the squad." Arsenal has been busy in the transfer market after finishing runner-up in the Premier League for a third straight season. A top striker is also among manager Mikel Arteta's targets. Norgaard made 196 appearances for Brentford and scored 13 goals. He said he was relishing the opportunity to play in the Champions League with Arsenal. 'You can get almost emotional because maybe it was a dream that I've given a little bit up on coming towards the later stage in my career,' he said. 'Now, I get to hear the anthem and be a part of a Champions League campaign. It's a childhood dream and something I didn't think would be possible. So it's something I'm really, really happy about.' ___ AP soccer: recommended Item 1 of 3

Red Sox Reportedly Make Alex Bregman Trade Decision, Per Insider
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. The Boston Red Sox have not met their offseason expectations so far. However, they have gotten Masataka Yoshida back, and Alex Bregman should be returning soon as well. Bregman was named an All-Star and was having a great year before his quad injury. With Rafael Devers' contract off the books, the Red Sox can afford to extend Bregman so he does not exercise his opt-out after the season. Bregman and his agent, Scott Boras, have made it known they are open to signing an extension. TAMPA, FLORIDA - APRIL 15: Alex Bregman #2 of the Boston Red Sox reacts after hitting a home run in the seventh inning against the Tampa Bay Rays at George M. Steinbrenner Field on April... TAMPA, FLORIDA - APRIL 15: Alex Bregman #2 of the Boston Red Sox reacts after hitting a home run in the seventh inning against the Tampa Bay Rays at George M. Steinbrenner Field on April 15, 2025 in Tampa, Florida. All players are wearing the number 42 in honor of Jackie Robinson Day. MoreWhile the Red Sox would like to extend Bregman, The Athletic's Jim Bowden reported that the team could try to trade him if extension talks stall. However, MassLive's Sean McAdam reported that a team official "dismissed" the notion that the team would trade him if an extension is not agreed to by the trade deadline. "One top Red Sox official dismissed the idea that the team would look into trading Alex Bregman if a contract extension can't be reached before trade deadline, saying: 'We're trying to win.' Contract talks have been casual, with club more focused on draft, deadline etc," McAdam wrote on X. The Red Sox and Craig Breslow have been adamant that the team is trying to win this year, even after the Rafael Devers trade. Trading away Bregman would not be a step in that direction. He is slashing .299/.385/.553 this season, and is the team's best hitter now that Devers is gone. Even if Bregman cannot reach an extension, the Red Sox now have the money to sign him to a new deal in free agency, although that does come with the risk of getting into a bidding war. There is no official deadline for an extension. Perhaps after the MLB Draft, extension talks could heat up. More MLB: Yankees' DJ LeMahieu Could Be 'Packing His Bags' After Reaction to Benching
