The Cincinnati Reds acquired Brady Singer to provide durability to their pitching staff after being a dependable starter for the Kansas City Royals.
Though it's been a stilted start to his Reds' tenure, Singer should be amped for a return to Kansas City when Cincinnati tries for a second straight win over the struggling Royals on Tuesday night.
Singer (5-3, 4.88 ERA) spent his first five major-league seasons as a Royal and, while he posted just one winning campaign in Kansas City, he made at least 24 starts in each of the last four. Singer, who was honored for his Royals service with a video tribute in Monday's series opener, set career highs in 2024 for starts (32), innings (179 2/3) and strikeouts (170).
All were key factors in the Reds trading talented second baseman Jonathan India -- a college teammate and good friend of Singer -- for the right-hander during the offseason. Coming back to Kansas City this week already has been emotional for Singer, who understands where his focus needs to be.
'I'm still here to do a job,' Singer said. 'Put the emotions on the backburner. Enjoy it ... but (Tuesday) we're going to work to win a game.'
As a Red, Singer went 4-1 and posted a 3.24 ERA in his first six starts, but has gone 1-2 with a 7.85 ERA in his four since.
Singer allowed four walks and five hits on Wednesday at Pittsburgh in his last outing, but only two runs while grinding out five innings of a 3-1 loss.
'Just trying to battle,' Singer said. 'That's what I've kind of been doing the past couple of outings. Just trying to make pitches. Work through it.'
India, the NL Rookie of the Year for Cincinnati in 2021, never achieved the same success over the next four seasons. He is 2-for-5 with a walk against his buddy.
'I don't know how to explain it until I'm in that moment -- him in the red, I'm in the blue,' India told MLB.com. 'All we can do is just be ourselves and push forward.'
India is 2-for-21 in the last six contests, with one of those hits coming in Kansas City's 7-4 loss on Monday. The Reds got seven solid innings from Nick Martinez and three hits, including a two-run homer, from Tyler Stephenson to win for the second time in three games after losing three straight.
Kansas City's Vinnie Pasquantino had three hits Monday and is batting .425 during a 10-game hitting streak. Teammate Maikel Garcia is batting .381 during his 11-game hitting streak.
However, the Royals have been held to fewer than five runs 13 times during their current 5-10 rut.
'We've got to be better than that,' Pasquantino said.
The Royals appear set for a bullpen game Tuesday, with Daniel Lynch IV (3-1, 1.57 ERA) getting the ball first according to MLB.com.
Kansas City pitchers will again try to contain Cincinnati's TJ Friedl, who has recorded four straight two-hit games. He's batting .419 over his last seven contests. Teammate Austin Hays had a triple with an RBI on Monday and is batting .321 in 29 games this season.
The Reds have split their last four games, but totaled 27 runs in the process.
'Very encouraging,' Cincinnati manager Terry Francona said.

Shubman Gill Scripts History, Becomes First Player In 148 Years To...

Shubman Gill continued to spread his magic in the second Test between India and England at Edgbaston, Birmingham. After scoring a mammoth 269 in his first innings in the game, Gill hit 161 to put India in the driving seat as the visitors set a massive 608-run target for the Three Lions. The performance helped Gill break and script multiple records; one of them happened for the first time in the 148-year history of Test cricket. Gill became the first-ever batter to smash a double ton and 150 in a Test match. Gill shone with the bat on Satuday before Mohammed Siraj and Akash Deep again struck with the new ball as the tourists pressed for a series-levelling win at Edgbaston. Gill declared India's second innings on 427-6 after tea on the fourth day. That left England needing a mammoth 608 runs to go 2-0 up in this five-match series. No side in 148 years of Test cricket have made more to win in the fourth innings than the West Indies' 418 against Australia at St John's in 2003. England's corresponding record is the 378 they made against India at Edgbaston three years ago. But at Saturday's close in Birmingham they were 72-3, needing a further 536 runs on the final day to achieve a win that would be remarkable even by this team's 'Bazball' standards. Harry Brook, who helped keep England afloat in their first innings with 158 in a total of 407, was still there on 15 not out. Siraj, who led India's attack with 6-70 in the first innings, struck an early blow Saturday when he removed Zak Crawley for a duck as a loose drive went straight to backward point. Deep, given the unenviable task of replacing the rested Jasprit Bumrah, the world's number one ranked fast bowler, then carried on from his four-wicket haul first-time around by bowling Ben Duckett (25) with a nip-back ball. He then clean bowled Joe Root for just six as the world's number one-ranked Test batsman was undone by a superb full-length delivery that moved away late. Earlier, by taking his tally in this match to 430 runs, the 25-year-old Gill became only the fifth batsman to score 400 or more runs in a single Test. Gill, thrust into the captaincy following Rohit Sharma's shock retirement from Test duty in May, has scored three hundreds in his first four innings as skipper following his 147 during India's five-wicket defeat in the first Test at Headingley.

England willing to settle for draw in 2nd Test against India: Batting coach Trescothick

Birmingham [UK], July 6 (ANI): England batting coach Marcus Trescothick claimed that they are willing to play for a draw in the ongoing second Test against India at Edgbaston as all three results remain possible on the final day of the contest in Birmingham. After burying England under an avalanche of runs, India stands seven wickets away from restoring parity at 1-1. England, on the other hand, has a colossal task in their hands. After ending the day with 72 runs on the board after losing three wickets, the Three Lions need to conjure a way to garner 536 runs to gun down India's daunting 608-run target. With the prospect of England's triumph being minuscule, Trescothick assured that the hosts are not 'stupid' enough to differentiate between when to push for a result or settle for a draw under 'challenging' conditions. 'I think whenever the situation is challenging, of course it is. I think you know if you get to the point where you can draw the game, of course. We're not stupid enough to understand that, you know, you have to just win or lose,' Trescothick told reporters at the end of the 4th day's play. In the final hour of the third session, India seamers Akash Deep and Mohammed Siraj ran rampant with the new ball and left England's batting order jolted with their scorching spells. With his blistering pace, Siraj drew the first blood and punched Zak Crawley's return ticket on a seven-ball duck. Akash nipped the ball sharply into Ben Duckett and found an inside edge, which directed the ball into the stumps, forcing the southpaw to return after a quick-fire 25(15). He continued to be one of the best in the business and left Root speechless with a peach of a delivery. The talismanic English batter got tempted by the length of the delivery and tried to work it through the on-side. However, the ball went past the outside edge, rattled the timber and forced Root to return on 6(16). Trescothick, aware of the threat that India is capable of causing with the new ball, admitted that the final day could play out in anybody's favour. 'You know, there are three results possible in every game that you play. But we have done some things in our time that we are different to what we've done before. So we'll see what happens,' he added. (ANI)

CHICAGO — Yohel Pozo pinch-hit a three-run homer to cap St. Louis' five-run eight-inning rally, and the Cardinals came back to top the Chicago Cubs 8-6 on Saturday, ending a four-game slide. Pozo's pinch-hit homer in the 8th powers Cardinals past Cubs, Busch 8-6 Pozo's drive off Brad Keller reached Waveland Avenue to put St. Louis ahead 8-5. Alec Burleson, who finished with three hits, cracked a solo shot to start the rally. Nolan Gorman also went deep for the Cardinals, who rebounded after Michael Busch and Carson Kelly homered for the second straight day to help Chicago build a two-run lead after seven. Thomas Saggese, a late replacement for Nolan Arenado at third, had two hits and two RBIs. Busch lined his 18th home run in his first at-bat, then doubled and singled. He smacked three of Chicago's franchise-record eight home runs an 11-3 rout of the Cardinals on Friday. Busch ran his streak of consecutive hits to seven Saturday before striking out in the seventh. Kelly also doubled and scored two runs for the NL Central leaders. Steven Matz , the Cardinals second reliever, got five outs for the win. Ryan Helsley pitched a 1-2-3 ninth for his 17th save. Keller was charged with five runs and the loss. St. Louis starter Matthew Liberatore allowed two runs on four hits in five innings. Drew Pomeranz opened for the Cubs but got just one out and yielded his first two earned runs of the season in his 27th game. The Cardinals tied at 5 in the eight on Burleson's homer and Gorman's RBI single. Keller then served up Pozo's third homer of the season on full-count slider. Pomeranz, who has opened three times, saw his ERA go from 0.00 to 0.76. The Cardinals send RHP Erick Fedde to the mound on Sunday versus Cubs LHP Matthew Boyd who has a 1.66 ERA over his last seven starts MLB: /mlb This article was generated from an automated news agency feed without modifications to text.
