Discoms gear up to tackle strike call in Noida and Ghaziabad

Time of India20-05-2025
Noida: In response to a strike call by
contractual discom workers
, authorities in Noida and Ghaziabad have mobilised backup resources through outsourcing agencies. The protest, organised by over 2,500 workers under the
UP Vidyut Karamchari Sanyukt Sangharsh Samiti
(VKSSS), is against the privatisation of discoms, Purvanchal Vidyut Vitran Nigam Limited (PUVVNL) and Dakshinanchal Vidyut Vitran Nigam Limited (DVVNL).
While workers have planned daily protests for three hours from May 21 to 28 from 2 pm to 5 pm, they have called for an indefinite boycott of work from May 29.
Despite the strike call, the discom staff are not expected to participate in the strike as directives have been issued for termination of services and blacklisting anyone found involved in the protest. District magistrates of both Noida and Ghaziabad have implemented stringent measures, deploying police and power department officials to safeguard critical infrastructure, including hospitals, airports, and waterworks.
GB Nagar district magistrate Manish Kumar Verma held meetings with the departments concerned and directed no disruption of work or power supply during the strike period.
Sanjay Kumar Jain, chief engineer, Noida power department, PVVNL, told TOI that the department has arranged 140 workers from the outsourced agency as backups during the period of the indefinite strike. "In case any lineman or staff from the department joins the strike, their services will be immediately terminated, and they will be blacklisted across the state," said Jain.

In the evening, he is scheduled to participate in a business conference hosted by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII). Meanwhile, the CM has directed municipal administration and urban development (MAUD) dept officials to consider the demands of outsourcing engineering workers. He also asked the cabinet sub-committee constituted to study the issues pertaining to outsourcing employees to resolve the issues for the benefit of workers. Outsourcing employees in the MAUD are demanding equal pay for equal work, restoration of Andhra Pradesh corporation for outsourced services (APCOS), enhanced ex gratia, increase in minimum wages, and reopening of provident fund accounts. MAUD's engineering wing workers are demanding equal pay to that of regular sanitation workers. The state govt constituted a group of ministers (GoM) to hold talks with the agitating outsourcing workers. The GoM, headed by MAUD minister P Narayana, discussed the workers' demands and the same was explained to the chief minister. Naidu asked Narayana to take a decision which should benefit the workers wherever possible. He approved most of the suggestions made by the GoM and directed them to end the stalemate at the earliest. Narayana said the issue would be resolved very soon as some of them are to be announced with the concurrence of the finance dept. Once the finance dept approves the proposals, an official announcement will be made from the govt side on the demands of outsourcing workers, he added.

Wage hike: Contract sanitary workers feel deceived by Coimbatore corporation

Coimbatore: Contract sanitary workers on Saturday accused the city corporation of deceiving them by promising to hike their wages to around Rs681 per day from around Rs560, with effect from May 1, 2025. The temporary workers said it was following a protest in April that the city corporation agreed to pay them around Rs681 per day. "The civic body said the gross salary it could offer was Rs20,454 per month. Officials told us that the revised salary will come into effect from May 1. But in May, those of us who worked for the entire month without taking any leave were paid only around Rs16,000 after deductions. It looks like the civic body is deducting both the employee's and employer's contributions to the Employees' State Insurance (ESI) scheme and the provident fund (PF) from our salaries. If it does so, it's unfair," said one of the contract workers, who didn't want to be named. After receiving the salary for the month of May, more than 2,000 contract sanitary workers had taken out nearly a week-long protest in the first week of June, seeking the revised wage. Following a series of negotiations with the workers' unions, the corporation had agreed to pay them Rs681 per day for 30 working days, including four weekly off days. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Đây có thể là thời điểm tốt nhất để giao dịch vàng trong 5 năm qua IC Markets Tìm hiểu thêm Undo The workers' demand for payslips was also accepted, and the payslip for May was issued in July. Commenting on the salary mentioned in the payslip, Tamil Nadu Selvam, general secretary, Tamil Nadu Annal Ambedkar Scavengers General Employees Union, said the city corporation was deceiving the contract sanitary workers. "The payslip shows that both the employee's and employer's contributions to the insurance scheme and PF were deducted from the workers' salaries, which is against the law. Say, if the monthly salary is Rs20,400, one should be paid approximately Rs18,800 after the deductions for ESI and PF. Instead, they were paid just Rs16,000," he said. Santhanam Kumar, one of the contract workers, wondered whether the law allows for double deduction for the ESI and PF benefits. "If we are still getting only Rs16,000, what difference did the negotiations make? Drivers are paid better than the sanitary workers. We are the ones who clear the city's waste, regardless of our health, family and timing. Even if a worker goes on leave for two days, the accumulated waste is still cleared by the same worker. " While TOI made several attempts to reach corporation officials for a comment on the allegations raised by the contract sanitary workers, no one was available for a comment.

Political vendetta, says Rohit Pawar on chargesheet

Pune: NCP (SP) MLA and Sharad Pawar's grandnephew Rohit Pawar termed the inclusion of his name in the Enforcement Directorate's chargesheet in the alleged Maharashtra State Cooperative Bank (MSCB) scam as "vendetta politics" by the govt and said he was ready for the legal battle. The ED filed the chargesheet naming Rohit in connection with the purchase of Kannad cooperative sugar factory in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar by Baramati Agro Ltd, owned by Rohit and his family members, through an auction. Before naming the Karjat-Jamkhed MLA in the chargesheet, the ED recorded his statement in the past. In the alleged MSCB scam, the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of Mumbai police had registered an FIR in August 2019 on the charges of fraudulent sale of the sugar factory by the directors of MSCB then at a throwaway price. The EOW had previously given a clean chit to all involved parties, including NCP leader Ajit Pawar and his nephew Rohit. Dy CM Ajit Pawar serves as the ruling alliance partner, while Rohit is in opposition. The ED had submitted the intervention application in court last year, challenging the closure report on the grounds that it would adversely affect their case as it was based on the EOW's FIR. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like So sánh mức trượt giá: Hợp đồng tương lai (CFD) Bitcoin vs Ethereum IC Markets Tìm hiểu thêm Undo The court has not yet reached a decision. Reacting to the ED's action, Rohit Pawar on Saturday said, "The FIR of this case does not have my name, but the ED kept all the 97 people named in the FIR aside and started a probe against me. Now, it has also mentioned my name in the chargesheet." He said, "Out of those 97 people named in the FIR, some are associated with the BJP or the Ajit Pawar-led NCP and the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena. I am being singled out by the ED. This is nothing but vendetta politics." After filing of the chargesheet, Rohit said he was ready for the legal battle and would not succumb to pressure. "Others may have run to join govt, but I will hold my ground and fight it in the court of law. I am one of the few MLAs raising public issues in the assembly, and the govt is using Central agencies to silence me. I will not bow before Delhi," he said.
