Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday expressed confidence that the friendship between India and the Maldives will 'scale new heights of progress", as he arrived in Male for a two-day state visit at the invitation of Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu.
In a post on social media platform X, PM Modi wrote, 'Landed in Male. Deeply touched by the gesture of President Muizzu to come to the airport to welcome me. I am confident that India-Maldives friendship will scale new heights of progress in the times to come."
He is visiting the island nation at the invitation of Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu and will attend the 60th Independence Day celebrations of the Maldives as the Guest of Honour.

The Ministry of External Affairs shared on X, 'PM @narendramodi lands in Male, Maldives to a ceremonial welcome. In a special gesture, President @MMuizzu and his Cabinet members received PM at the airport. This is the 3rd visit by PM to. PM will be participating as 'Guest of Honour' at the 60th anniversary of the Independence of."
This is Prime Minister Modi's third visit to the Maldives and marks the second leg of his two-nation tour after the UK.
Over the years, India has always been a friend in need to the Maldives. Here's how:
Economic & Financial Assistance
Treasury bills and liquidity support: India renewed a USD 50 million treasury bill for another year via State Bank of India in May 2025, helping Maldives avoid default amidst heavy debt exposure. In 2024, India extended a USD 400-million currency swap line (via SAARC framework). It also granted an additional Rs 30 billion support to stabilise the Maldivian rufiyaa.
Budget support grants: For FY 2025–26, India allocated Rs 600 crore — up from Rs 470 crore—contributing approximately 72% of projected grant aid to Maldives.
COVID-era aid: I ndia gifted a USD 250 m cash package in treasury bonds to assist during the pandemic in September 2020.
Infrastructure & Connectivity
News18 had earlier reported how as part of the India-Maldives development partnership, India has extended eight 'Line of Credit' Projects worth USD 1.3 billion to the Maldives. EXIM Bank of India signed a Line of Credit Agreement for USD 400 million, for funding the Greater Male Connectivity Project (GMCP), while India committed a USD 100 million grant for the project.
The projects India has helped with include:
Greater Malé Connectivity Project: The flagship project includes a 6.74 km bridge-causeway network linking Malé with Villingili, Gulhifalhu, and Thilafushi—funded via USD 100 m grant + USD 400 m LoC to enhance mobility for nearly half the population.
Hankede Bridge (Addu City): A 1.4 km bridge connecting Maradhoo to Gaukendi, built under the LoC, inaugurated in February 2025 to boost regional connectivity in southern Maldives.
Gan International Airport (Addu): Largest-ever Indian-funded airport project, inaugurated in 2023-24 to enhance southern Maldives connectivity and tourism.
Addu City roads & reclamation: A USD 200 m project boosting infrastructure and tourism potential in Maldives' second city.
Gulhifalhu Port project: India-backed harbour on Gulhifalhu to decongest Malé Port and support logistics—being rolled out under infrastructure credit lines.
Water & sanitation: Major climate-resilient infrastructure in 34 islands, benefiting ~28,000 residents, funded via USD 100 m grant for water supply and sewerage systems.
Social housing: Development of 4,000 affordable housing units in Hulhumalé Phase II under buyers' credit, easing pressure on capital housing.
Fisheries & industrial support: Expansion of Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO) facilities at Felivaru and Gemanafushi islands, aiding the export-based economy; ice plants and logistics capacity set up under Indian support, with one plant inaugurated in February 2025.

Defence & Security Cooperation
Defence infrastructure: India funded and supports the construction of Uthuru Thila Falhu Naval Base & harbour, as well as coastal radar infrastructure in the Maldives.
Capacity building & training: India provides 70% of MNDF training, with over 1,500 Maldivian service personnel trained in India; joint exercises such as Ekuverin, Ekatha, and trilateral Dosti improve interoperability.
Operation Cactus & rapid response history demonstrates India's role as the Maldives' 'first responder" in crises since the late 1980s.

Digital, Health & People-centric Cooperation
Health infrastructure: India built the Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital in Malé (1995), a 300-bed tertiary facility, and supports TB medication and plans for a cancer specialty hospital in Laamu Atoll.
Community projects: India has supported 45 high impact community development projects covering amenities like playgrounds, gyms, coastal protection, police infrastructure, schools, and more—27 already completed with grants totaling dozens of millions USD.

As more slum dwellers told to move, Delhi CM assures justice
Reiterating that unauthorised slums will be removed from Delhi, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Sunday said that the government has allocated a budget Rs 700 crore to provide accommodation to eligible slum dwellers. 'Whenever slums need to be removed for any reason, arrangements are being made to provide houses to the eligible residents…,' she said at the 'Faatak wali jhuggi' near the railway crossing in Shalimar Bagh on Sunday morning. The Railways has issued a notice for the removal of the sum cluster, citing that it is located on railway land needed for the expansion of the Azadpur railway station. 'You will get complete justice. The Delhi government is fully committed to this,' Gupta told the slum dwellers. 'When a crisis came upon you, I came to meet you because the Delhi government is not in favour of removing slums without reason… If slums have to be removed for development projects or other legitimate reasons, the government will ensure proper rehabilitation for the eligible residents so they too can become part of Delhi's growth story,' she added. This comes amid the recent demolition of unauthorised slums at Madrasi Camp, Bhoomiheen Camp, Jailerwala Bagh Camp and Taimoor Nagar in the Capital. Taking on AAP and Congress, Gupta said that in the last 40 years, no development has taken place in Delhi's slums. 'These parties have only seen slum dwellers as voters and constantly tried to exploit them, while also damaging the city's geographical character,' she said. The AAP, meanwhile, said in a statement, 'The CM has been constantly lying on this issue. First, on completion of 100 days of her government, she claimed no jhuggi will be demolished. And on the very next day, hundreds of jhuggis were demolished at Madrasi Camp. Later, thousands of people have to rendered homeless at Jailerwala Bagh, Bawana, Moti Nagar, Kalkaji etc.' 'We challenge Rekha Gupta to publish the list of jhuggis that have been demolished and names of people who have been given flats by them. They are trying to fool the people by giving flats to just a few of them and making others homeless,' the party added. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, too, said on Sunday that hundreds of slum dwellers in Delhi are going through the pain of being rendered homeless with their houses being destroyed by the BJP government, as he claimed that this 'atrocity' exposes the ruling party's 'insensitivity' towards the poor and its 'arrogance of power'. The leader of opposition in the Lok Sabha shared a video of his recent visit to Delhi's Ashok Vihar area where houses of several people were brought down by the administration. The small houses in which they had settled their entire life were 'ruthlessly destroyed' by the BJP government, he alleged in his post in Hindi on X along with the video.

Khuba accuses state govt of creating artificial fertiliser shortage

However, he accused the Congress govt in the state of artificially creating a shortage and selling fertilisers at inflated prices in the black market, thus embezzling funds. During a press conference on Sunday evening, he expressed his concerns about the lack of urea and DAP fertilisers in the state, which led to significant disruptions. He vehemently condemned the actions of the Congress govt. Khuba highlighted that fertilisers are being sold at Rs 100 above the standard rates in black markets. Despite sufficient supplies, a fabricated shortage appears to exist. He criticised the Congress for persistently blaming the Modi govt while they continue to receive regular fertiliser supplies and financial support from the central govt. Drawing from his experience as the former Union minister for fertilisers, Khuba challenged Congress's claims regarding fertiliser distribution. He noted that the black market for fertilisers is prevalent in all states governed by Congress, not just in Karnataka. He provided detailed statistics: The state requires 11.1 lakh metric tonnes of urea for monsoon farming. The central govt supplied 8.7 lakh metric tonnes, with 7 lakh metric tonnes already allocated and 1.6 lakh metric tonnes still available. Regarding DAP, out of a need for 4 lakh metric tonnes, 2.95 lakh metric tonnes have been supplied, with 2.2 lakh metric tonnes distributed and 71,000 metric tonnes remaining. District BJP unit president Somnath Patil criticised the state govt's apparent indifference to central initiatives. He pointed out the delays in providing relief to farmers affected by adverse weather conditions. He connected 3,400 farmer suicides over the past two years to flawed state policies. District BJP youth unit president Santhosh Reddy, District BJP Raita Morcha president Shivaraj Almaje, District BJP media coordinator Srinivas Chaudhary, Babuwali, Fernandes Hippalgaon, and many other functionaries were present.
