France Renews Unchangeable Position on Western Sahara

Morocco World15-04-2025

Rabat — France reaffirmed today its unwavering support for Morocco's territorial integrity and sovereignty over its southern provinces in Western Sahara.
The Qaui d'Orsay issued a statement today following a meeting between Foreign Affairs Minister Nasser Bourita and his counterpart Jean-Noel Barrot, reaffirming the European country's 'unchangeable' position regarding the Sahara dispute.
In the statement, France reiterated its position, recalling the letter Emmanuel Macron sent to King Mohammed VI in July last year. He said that for France, 'the present and future of Western Sahara fall within the framework of Moroccan sovereignty.'
The statement from the French government also stressed its commitment to act in accordance with this position both nationally and internationally, reaffirming the clear and consistent support for Morocco's Autonomy Plan as the only framework within which this issue must be resolved.
Barrot said that the autonomy initiative constitutes the 'sole basis' for reaching a political solution, noting the growing international consensus in support of the Moroccan initiative.
The foreign minister also said that France intends to fully play its part in this regard, with France supporting Morocco's significant efforts for the economic and social development in the country's southern provinces.
France's newfound position on Western Sahara has unlocked a fresh chapter of strong bilateral ties between the two countries.
Macron and French officials have been constantly recalling France's unwavering support in favor of Morocco's position at the local and international level.
During his historic visit to Morocco in October last year, Macron promised that his country would convey its support and defend Morocco's position at all international forums.
'Our operators and businesses will support the development of these territories through investments, sustainable initiatives, and solidarity for the benefit of local populations,' he said in a speech at the Moroccan parliament in October 2024.
Macron also responded to the criticism and Morocco-bashing campaigns from Polisario supporters, including Algeria's regime, which recalled its ambassador to Paris as soon as France announced its decision to recognize Morocco's sovereignty over its southern provinces in Western Sahara.
France's newfound position on the Sahara is 'not hostile to anyone,' he argued, adding that it is rooted in history and respectful of realities. Tags: Algeria and the Western SaharaAlgeria France tension

Syrian Party Calls for Including Polisario Front in Country's Terror List

Tangier — The Free Syrian Party has urged Syria's new leadership to include the separatist Polisario Front in an official list of banned terrorist organizations on Syrian territory. The party specifically wants the Polisario Front included on this list, along with other extremist militias that killed Syrian civilians. The Free Syrian Party, formerly known as the National Salvation Front in Syria, made this call in a statement, commending ongoing legislative efforts in the US Congress to add Polisario to American terrorism lists. Syria closes Polisario offices The Syrian political organization renewed its support for the new Syrian leadership's decision to shut down Polisario offices inside Syria, describing the move a 'brave step that exposes the separatist organization's true nature.' The Free Syrian Party described Polisario as a group backed by Iran's Revolutionary Guard. According to the statement, the party said that Iran employed Polisario as one of its tools to kill the Syrian people during the country's civil war. Call for Western Sahara recognition The party also urged the current Syrian government to officially recognize Morocco's sovereignty over Western Sahara. This recognition would help repair the damage that the previous ousted Bashar Al Assad's regime caused to historic Syrian-Moroccan relations. The Free Syrian Party said quick recognition of Morocco's sovereignty over its southern provinces has become an urgent political necessity, arguing that it would prevent any malicious efforts to block progress in fixing Syrian-Moroccan relations. Building better relations with Morocco The party expressed its commitment to building the best possible relations with Morocco, calling on the Middle Eastern country to draw lessons from Morocco's accumulated experience and expertise across various fields. The Free Syrian Party believes the North African country's experience could help transform Damascus' security and military institutions. Morocco could also assist Syria in its transitional phase, particularly with reconstruction projects, development initiatives, and local administration reform. The party expressed its desire for the country to maintain strong relations with Morocco, noting that it comes from understanding Rabat's importance and influence in regional and international politics. The organization recognizes Morocco's significant weight in diplomatic affairs. Background context The Free Syrian Party's statement comes as Syria's new government works to rebuild the country after years of civil war. The new leadership has begun reviewing Syria's international relationships and closing offices of organizations it considers problematic. The call to designate Polisario as a terrorist group aligns with similar efforts by other Arab nations and the US. US Republican Joe Wilson has recently submitted a legislation bill titled 'Polisario Front Terrorist Designation Act,' aimed at designating the Polisario Front as a terrorist group. Submitted alongside Democratic Representative Jimmy Panetta, the bill directly links the group to extensive arms and drug trafficking networks operating in the Sahel region. It also features some of the separatist group's violations of international law, including established ceasefire agreements with Morocco and calculated attacks targeting Moroccan civilians in the region. Morocco has been attracting support from international countries on its Autonomy Plan as the only serious and credible path toward a lasting political resolution. Attackers Target Another Mosque in France as Anti-Muslim Violence Rises

Berlin – On Saturday, the El Hidaya Mosque in Roussillon, southeastern France, was the target of a violent act of vandalism. Around 5 a.m., masked individuals smashed the entrance windows, overturned furniture, and plastered the mosque's walls with hate-filled leaflets. Several similar flyers were found scattered on the ground. The religious association overseeing the mosque has filed a formal complaint. Authorities have launched an investigation to identify those responsible. This attack follows a troubling pattern of recent anti-Muslim incidents across the country. A few weeks earlier, a man was arrested after desecrating the Errahma Mosque in Villeurbanne, where a burned Quran was found at the building's entrance. According to figures released by French authorities, 79 anti-Muslim acts were recorded between January and March 2025, a 72% increase compared to the same period in 2024. This rise reflects a climate of growing hostility, driven in part by increasingly aggressive rhetoric toward Muslims, including within French political circles. The Grand Mosque of Paris issued a strong condemnation of the attack, calling it an 'Islamophobic act.' In a statement, the institution said that 'the Grand Mosque of Paris firmly condemns the Islamophobic act committed this Saturday, June 28, 2025, against the El Hidaya Mosque in Roussillon, which is affiliated with the federation of the Grand Mosque of Paris.' It expressed its full support for Nouredine Louchene, president of the ACMR (Association Cultuelle des Musulmans de Roussillon), as well as for the local Muslim faithful and all the residents of Roussillon. The Grand Mosque of Paris also urged authorities to move swiftly. As the investigation continues, the Roussillon attack adds to mounting concerns over the safety of Muslim communities in France, and raises pressing questions about the response of society and the state in the face of a rising tide of hate. Polisario attends EU-AU agriculture meeting in Rome despite non-recognition by EU

The European Union allowed the participation of Polisario members at a ministerial meeting held Friday in Rome with the African Union, focused on agricultural development in Africa. The delegation from the Front was led by its so-called «Minister of Agriculture», who, in his speech, emphasized «the vital importance of this event and its key role in achieving sustainable development and economic integration», according to the SPS news agency, reported on Saturday. As with the Polisario's presence at the AU–EU ministerial meeting on May 21 in Brussels, the EU spokesperson reiterated that «neither the EU nor any of its member states recognize the so-called 'SADR'», according to MAP. «The agreed arrangements specify that each side is responsible for inviting its own participants (...) Invitations to African representatives are issued by the African Union», the spokesperson clarified. The Polisario's presence in Rome comes in contrast to its exclusion from the most recent U.S.-Africa Business Summit, held from June 22 to 25 in Luanda, Angola — a country that still recognizes the «SADR».
