Sarawak Deputy Minister to discuss Borneo's green energy shift at Energy Exports Conference

Zawya08-05-2025
ABERDEEN, Scotland — Sarawak's Deputy Minister of Energy and Environmental Sustainability, the Honourable Dr. Haji Hazland bin Abg. Haji Hipni will deliver a keynote address at the Energy Exports Conference (EEC) 2025, held on June 3–4 at P&J Live in Aberdeen.
EEC 2025, organised by global supply chain trade association -- the Energy Industries Council, brings together energy industry leaders to explore real-world project opportunities and means of accelerating the global energy transition. The event provides a key platform for the energy supply chain to navigate new export markets and form cross-border partnerships.
Dr. Haji Hazland bin Abg. Haji Hipni will lead a Sarawak delegation to Aberdeen to present the 'Opportunities in Borneo' session. Taking place on 3 June, the session will explore Borneo's roadmap for sustainable energy development and the associated investment and export opportunities whilst also highlighting Borneo's plans to leverage its hydropower muscle to attract foreign investment.
'Sarawak isn't just talking about energy transition, it's building the infrastructure to lead it,' said EIC CEO Stuart Broadley. 'Their strategy dovetails with EEC's goal of turning dialogue into real projects that cut emissions without killing economies.'
EEC 2025 aims to bridge gaps between policymakers, operators, financiers and the supply chain. Its panels are set to discuss regional opportunities from Saudi Arabia's mega-projects to Africa's untapped renewables. Breakout sessions will take a deeper look into issues like de-risking emerging markets and scaling supply chains for offshore wind and nuclear. The event will also feature open discussions on cross-border hydrogen ventures and carbon capture tech as applied in different regions around the world.
'As nations scramble to hit net-zero targets, Borneo's mix of hydropower dominance and hydrogen potential could make it a critical testing ground for Asia's energy transition,' Broadley said. 'We expect Dr. Haji Hazland bin Abg. Haji Hipni's address in Aberdeen to echo Sarawak's broader regional approach: marry public-private partnerships with tech innovation to monetise sustainability.'
In February, the EIC, in collaboration with the Ministry of Energy and Environmental Sustainability in Sarawak, organised its flagship regional event, EIC Connect Borneo, which convened more than a thousand delegates to discuss the latest energy transition trends and business opportunities in the region.
The Energy Industries Council brings together over 950 companies from the energy supply chain sector across all industries.

South Africa Ramps Up Energy Investment Drive with Dedicated Roundtable at African Energy Week (AEW) 2025

South Africa is positioning itself as a premier investment destination in Africa's energy transition, with a strategic push across the entire energy value chain – from oil and gas exploration to renewables and green hydrogen. At African Energy Week (AEW) 2025: Invest in African Energies, an 'Invest in South Africa' Roundtable will bring together top-tier investors, policymakers and energy executives to spotlight the country's evolving regulatory landscape, its new national oil company and a host of bankable infrastructure projects. This year's roundtable brings together a powerful lineup of speakers driving South Africa's energy future, including Shahrukh Mirza, VP LNG Development at ExxonMobil, Stefano Marani, CEO of Renergen Limited, and senior representatives from both the newly formed South African National Petroleum Company (SANPC) and the South African National Energy Development Institute. South Africa's energy sector is undergoing a critical transformation: years of load-shedding and grid instability has prompted bold reforms aimed at liberalizing the energy market, fast-tracking private-sector participation and diversifying supply sources. As the government unbundles Eskom and opens transmission infrastructure to independent power producers, investor interest in South Africa's power and gas markets is growing sharply. Meanwhile, the Integrated Resource Plan and Renewable Energy Masterplan are paving the way for expanded solar, wind and battery storage deployment, backed by robust public-private collaboration. The upstream oil and gas sector is also entering a pivotal new phase. The recently established SANPC is spearheading fresh exploration efforts and opening up acreage across frontier basins, including the Orange Basin – an area that has drawn renewed interest following a string of offshore discoveries in neighboring Namibia. Energy major Shell has secured approval for a five-well drilling campaign in the Northern Cape Ultra Deep block, while TotalEnergies is targeting a two-well wildcat campaign in South Africa's portion of the Orange Basin, slated for 2026. With upcoming licensing opportunities, transparent fiscal terms and enhanced data packages, South Africa is well-positioned to attract both new market entrants and experienced independents to its upstream sector. In its gas monetization strategy, South Africa is advancing efforts to leverage domestic resources – including those under development by Renergen at the Virginia Gas Project – to support helium exports and the production of LNG for transport and industrial fuel use. The country's Gas Master Plan, currently under review, sets out a roadmap for critical infrastructure, including LNG terminals, pipeline expansions and strategic gas storage, aimed at enhancing long-term energy security. At the same time, public-private initiatives such as the green hydrogen corridor – linking the Northern Cape to key export hubs – are laying the groundwork for large-scale hydrogen production, backed by the region's exceptional solar and wind potential. 'As South Africa retools its regulatory environment and builds momentum behind energy diversification, AEW 2025 stands as the ideal venue to connect capital with opportunity. From the Orange Basin's high-impact prospects to scalable renewables and gas monetization, the country is open for business,' says Oré Onegbesan, Program Director, AEW. Lithium output in Zimbabwe could rise with Sandawana mine by 2027

Zimbabwe's lithium sector delivered 2.4 million tons of concentrate in 2024, more than tripling the previous year's output of 745,455 tons. Authorities project 3.26 million tons in 2025, driven by the launch of new mines and strong investment from Chinese companies. Sandawana follows this trend. Kuvimba has partnered with two Chinese firms for the project, which is expected to cost $270 million. Barnard did not name the partners in the latest announcement, but previously mentioned Zhejiang Huayou Cobalt and Tsingshan Holding Group as collaborators in a 2024 interview with Bloomberg. This wave of new lithium projects comes amid rising global demand for the metal, which is essential for energy transition technologies. The International Energy Agency estimates that around 55 new lithium mines will be needed by 2035 to meet demand. Zimbabwe could play a role in closing that supply gap, provided new projects stay on track and output remains strong. For Sandawana, securing funding is the next key step. Kuvimba is continuing talks with its Chinese partners to finalize financing. Despite a prolonged slump in global lithium prices, down about 80% since 2023 due to oversupply, Barnard remains confident that prices will recover by the time Sandawana begins operations. © Copyright The Zimbabwean. British Open could return to Donald Trump's Turnberry course

British Open organisers the Royal and Ancient (R&A) refused to rule out a return to US President Donald Trump's Turnberry course if infrastructure challenges were overcome. The Scottish course, which was bought by Trump in 2014, has not hosted the only major outside the US since 2012. In the wake of the storming of the US Capitol by Trump supporters in January 2021, the R&A said the British Open would not return to Turnberry until "the focus will be on the championship" rather than the course's proprietor. Mark Darbon, new chief executive of the R&A, straight-batted the prospect of awarding Turnberry the championship until significant upgrades are made around the course on Scotland's west coast. "We love the golf course but we've got some big logistical challenges there," Darbon told a press conference ahead of the 153rd British Open, which begins at Royal Portrush on Thursday. "You see the scale of their setup here and we've got some work to do on the road, rail and accommodation infrastructure around Turnberry. "We've explicitly not taken it out of our pool of venues but we'd need to address those logistical challenges should we return." Darbon revealed he had a meeting earlier in the year with Trump's son, Eric, but said no pressure had been put on by the British government to fast track Turnberry's return to the Open Championship rotation. "We've spoken to them specifically about Turnberry and I think they've made it clear that the decision around where we take our championship rests with us," he added on government involvement. "I met a couple of months ago with Eric Trump and some of the leadership from the Trump golf organisation and from Turnberry. We had a really good discussion. "I think they understand clearly where we're coming from. We talked through some of the challenges that we have so we've got a good dialogue with them." A return to Turnberry is highly unlikely before Trump's second term as president comes to an end in early 2029. The next two British Opens will be held at Birkdale and St. Andrews respectively, with a venue for 2028 to be confirmed early next year. There could also be an addition to the current rota of 10 venues with the possibility the British Open could be played in the Republic of Ireland for the first time at Portmarnock, near Dublin. "Yes, we are thinking about Portmarnock," added Darbon. "We think it's a wonderful links golf course and we've been really encouraged by the support that we've had in principle from the Irish government to work with us to understand whether we could stage an Open Championship there in the future. "We're knee deep in feasibility work to help us answer that question fully. We expect to have a clearer picture by the back end of this year."
