Abandoned UK island untouched for nearly a century just yards from seaside town

An impressive fortress built upon a tiny island just 800 yards from a popular UK seaside town has transformed itself into a haven for wildlife, after it disarmed and abandoned back in 1929
A crumbling but 'magical' fortress built on a tiny island has taken on a new life after being deserted by humans for decades.
Disrupting the otherwise, calm and crystal-clear waters of the Milford Haven Waterway in Pembrokeshire, Wales, stands the impressive Stack Rock Fort. Constructed to protect the UK against sea invasion, this grade-listed 2 building is a two-tiered mega structure featuring casemates (aka gun emplacements) on each level, as well as a roof-top gun platform.

The original idea to build Stack Rock reportedly stems back to Thomas Cromwell in 1539, but it wasn't actually constructed until 1850-1852. Upgrades to the fort later took place from 1859 to 1871, welcoming a new building that completely encased the original gun tower.

Now looking a little worse for wear, Stack Rock is still visible from the mainland, located just 800 yards off the coast of Milford Haven. This tiny seaside town has slowly transformed its industrial reputation into a booming tourist destination thanks to its stylishly redeveloped marina and bustling food scene.
The fort, which has been described as a 'time capsule', was deemed essential to defend the country against French aggression under Napoleon III, but its importance started to dwindle and by 1895 - most of the artillery inside had been removed. It was later manned by a small number of soldiers during World War One., but never really saw combat.
In 1929, Stack Rock was officially disarmed and fully abandoned, before being sold several times on the private market. Like many of the UK's abandoned islands - including the remote St Kilda and the doughnut-shaped Outer Trial Bank island off the Lincolnshire coast - Stack Rock Fort has been reclaimed by nature. Now sporting lush greenery, weeds, and moss in every crevice, the isle has become a sanctuary for several types of seabirds in the area. Today, the only threat the fort needs to brace itself for is seagull droppings and invasive ivy.

According to the BBC, the island was bought by Anoniiem back in 2020 for an undisclosed sum. However, the community interest company intends to preserve the fort as a 'living ruin' and has ruled out transforming the structure into a luxury accommodation site.
Anoniiem's company director Nick said: "We want to preserve it in its current state, not in its formal use, so if it can be stabilised as it is, in this amazing combination of nature and architecture, that's the goal. It's definitely a passion project, it's definitely not a money earner, there are no plans for a five-star hotel or any of these kind of things. It's a stabilisation accessibility project and preserving it for the future."

BBC confirms the future of two beloved daytime TV shows after a whopping 15 years on screens - as host pens emotional message to fans

The future of two beloved daytime hits has been confirmed by the BBC on Tuesday after a whopping 15 years on screens. Antiques Road Trip has amassed a whopping 31 series since its debut in 2010, quickly becoming a fan-favourite and staple of the TV schedule. Now bosses have confirmed the hit format's fate as its host released an emotional statement to fans. They've officially green-lit a 32nd series, with 20 brand new episodes of the afternoon show ordered. Meanwhile, in a further update, the broadcaster has also revealed the Travelling Auctioneers will return for a fifth series. Since its launch in 2022, it's gained a cult following and established itself as a major part of the BBC's daytime output. Izzie Balmer, JB Broad and Bee Harford are back for series five, along with restoration maestros JJ Chalmers, Robin Johnson, Lauren Wood and Saf Fakir. Speaking about its return, host Izzie Balmer said: 'The Antiques Road Trip and Travelling Auctioneers teams have become like family to me. In fact, I sometimes see them more than my actual family… 'I wouldn't have it any other way though, because these shows are great fun, full of heart, and have just the right amount of jeopardy to keep you on the edge of your seat… without spilling your cuppa! I know how much they mean to our viewers and I'm thrilled to be back filming on them both.' Muslim Alim, Commissioning Editor for BBC Daytime and Early Peak, said: 'These shows are TV gold packed with great stories, brilliant finds and led by experts in their field. 'Antiques Road Trip and The Travelling Auctioneers have become firm favourites with our audiences and it's easy to see why: they're warm, feel-good and endlessly entertaining. I'm absolutely thrilled we're bringing them back and hugely grateful to the top-tier talent at STV Studios who make them so special.' Izzie Balmer previously revealed how her TV career wasn't initially the path she thought she'd end up on. She had originally wanted to be a musician and attended music college before realising it wasn't right. Speaking to Great British Life, Izzie confessed: 'I planned to be a professional musician but didn't enjoy music college. It wasn't for me.' Her move to Bargain Hunt was then fairly spontaneous as she stepped in for her boss to auctioneer on the show when no other auctioneers were available. She said: 'There were no other auctioneers available it had to be me. I had to auction the Bargain Hunt lots in front of the cameras.' It was her mother Sheila who encouraged her to go into the antiques business full time after graduating and moving back home to look for a job. After some work experience she secured a full-time job at a local auction house. Then after becoming a regular on the hit show Antiques Road Trip, she landed a full-time role. This ignited a passion that led her to study at Birmingham's School of Jewellery. In a 2019 interview with Bristol Post, she revealed: 'I kind of fell into this job but I absolutely love it.

I found European summer vibes at a beach resort in the Dominican Republic

Junior year of college, I was invited by my then-best friend to spend a few weeks on the beach in Italy with her family. It was a brief but transformative experience, introducing me to the carefree feeling everyone on Instagram is trying to capture and sell. Long days spent mostly on the water, simple meals shared in big groups, casual conversations with strangers that somehow spark lifelong friendships—and so much wine. The way Europeans squeeze every last drop out of summer, doing everything from water aerobics to throwing impromptu beach parties and sitting down for those gloriously long, boozy lunches. The kind of stuff you just can't slap a filter over. Europe wasn't in the cards this summer, but I found that fleeting, anything-is-possible summer feeling at Club Med Michès Playa Esmeralda in the Dominican Republic. Yes, that Club Med —the one that peaked in the '80s and '90s and seemed to disappear like tanning beds and dial-up internet. Turns out, the 75-year-old, French-born brand is alive, well and still opening resorts. This one opened in 2019 on a secluded stretch of Playa Esmeralda in the Dominican Republic. Billing itself as a luxury eco-resort, Michès is part of Club Med's five-star Exclusive Collection. Remote, yes—but with every modern amenity and convenience, the 93-acre beachfront oasis packs it in. For those unfamiliar, Club Med is an all-inclusive resort: one price covers your stay, meals and activities. But that barely scratches the surface of what turned out to be an expansive, rejuvenating and seriously fun vacation for me and my family. Like those weeks in Italy and the summers that followed, I made friends, sat down for proper lunches of freshly prepared meals, tried new things—and had champagne at every meal. Every morning began with a group jog around the property, followed by breakfast at Cayuco, the resort's main restaurant. Less buffet, more gourmet food court, the spread ranged from made-to-order eggs to a cornucopia of tropical fruit to a rotating daily station (my favorite) serving Mexican chilaquiles, French crepes, and other hangover-curing essentials. Pressed juices and enough caffeine options to rival a Starbucks rounded it out. Then it was off to the beach. I've been on trips where getting a lounger meant waking up at dawn or bribing someone to hold one. Not here. At Michès, loungers are plentiful because that's literally the point of a beach vacation. I didn't line up for anything, didn't have to make a single reservation. I just walked up to the sports shack, grabbed a paddle and life vest, and hit the water. Fresh coconut water? Available straight from the source, just add your paper straw. It wasn't about entitlement—I'm not above waiting for a piña colada—but about a certain level of ease. And I found that here. Club Med calls its staff G.O.s—Gracious Organizers—many of whom are young, seasonal workers from French-speaking countries. They wear a lot of hats, and they elevate the whole experience. One moment I'm dropping my toddler off at kids' club with an adorable young French girl; the next, her counselor is dressed as the Statue of Liberty at Cayuco for the Fourth of July. My jogging buddy? He also teaches water aerobics and performs in acrobatic shows. The G.O. who checked me in? She's front and center during Crazy Signs, the daily choreographed dance party that's a Club Med signature. Club Med felt more like summer camp led by adults who are professionally fun. The pop-up dance parties reminded me of melon time at One Fire Beach Club on the Amalfi Coast. One moment you're sipping an Aperol Spritz, the next a staffer is smashing open a watermelon and turning the beach into a rave. Two parties, same vibe. I spent hours lounging with a book, but when that got old, there was plenty to do. I tried archery for the first time, paddleboarded after lunch and convinced my husband to do yoga in the jungle. His first-ever class was led by an instructor trained under Jonah Kest, a globally known yoga ambassador. I learned that after the fact, but it tracked. Plus, the palapa had a Zen, treehouse feel that instantly set the tone. I never thought 'activities' would be my thing on a beach vacation since I usually pack as many books as I do clothes. But here we are. There's something to be said about relinquishing control and knowing you'll be taken care of. Club Med's slogan is 'L'Esprit Libre,' or 'the free spirit,' which, to me, meant trying something new and embracing simple moments. It may not have been my dream European beach club, but geography aside, it satisfied that same craving for connection, relaxation and joie de vivre—and I didn't even need to cross the Atlantic.

Escape to the Country host stunned by couple's unexpected move in 'show first'

Escape to the Country host Ginny Buckley was on hand to help a couple look for their dream home in Wales during Tuesday's episode of the BBC show Escape to the Country host Ginny Buckley recently highlighted a first-time moment in her decade-long run on the BBC series. ‌ In Tuesday's episode (July 22), Ginny was tasked with assisting a couple in their significant relocation from Somerset to South West Wales. ‌ Outdoor enthusiasts Paul and Michelle had a maximum budget of £400,000 for a traditional detached property with high ceilings, requiring at least three bedrooms and two bathrooms. ‌ A substantial space for Paul to convert into a workshop for restoring his vintage bike was also on their wish list. The property also needed to have a generous outdoor area as they intended to start a glamping business or a forest school, reports Wales Online. ‌ Ginny arranged several property viewings that ticked all the boxes for the couple; however, it was evident that the mystery property left them astounded. The property in question, located in Llandeilo, Carmarthenshire, was slightly under their budget, listed at £395,000. The 1930s bungalow boasted three bedrooms, a kitchen diner, and 2 acres of land with a stunning view. Just before viewing the mystery property, Paul and Michelle did something Ginny had never witnessed in her ten years on Escape to the Country. ‌ Clearly enamoured by the view and the garden space, they chose to explore the outdoors first before venturing inside. Ginny was caught off guard by a unique request during her decade-long tenure on Escape to the Country, confessing: "This is the very first time, in 10 years of working on Escape to the Country, that I've had someone wanting to explore the garden first." ‌ She noted the couple's affinity for the Welsh outdoors, saying: "It shows how much the outdoors here in Wales really appeals to these two. I hope the inside of the house matches up too." Michelle was visibly impressed with the property, stating: "Completely astonished by it and it's everything we are looking for. The house does need some work done to it but it's doable and lots of it we can do ourselves." However, despite their initial enthusiasm, the couple ultimately decided against making an offer, indicating they are still on the hunt for their perfect home. Escape to the Country airs weekdays from 3pm on BBC One and iPlayer
