
Ex-Scots RAF serviceman suddenly lost hearing and balance overnight
A former Scots RAF serviceman who lost his hearing overnight has praised a Scottish charity for helping him regain his independence.
Philip McDonald, 62, from Elgin, told how his life changed dramatically in 2015 when he woke up one morning to find he was unable to hear anything. When he managed to make it to his doctor for an emergency appointment, he was diagnosed with sudden onset hearing loss, which also caused tinnitus.
Philip recalled: 'I woke up at 5am to a loud crashing noise, and got up to check what had caused it. I was staggering all over the house, and put it down to being half asleep.
'I went back to bed, but when I woke at 8am, I was still staggering and bouncing around. I thought I would turn the volume on the TV up, but still couldn't hear anything.
'I realised I couldn't hear my feet on the floor, I couldn't hear the kettle, I couldn't hear anything, and I started to panic.
'I managed to get a taxi to the GP, where the doctor and other staff had to communicate with me by writing things down. All I could hear was a loud whistling in my ears from the tinnitus.
'Over time, some of my hearing did come back, but all I can hear now is really low bass notes in one of my ears. Sometimes the tinnitus is so bad I can't hear anything else.'
The same condition also brought up severe vertigo, which resulted in Philip losing his job in a nursing home as he was deemed unable to provide safe care.
Sharing his story at the start of Deaf Awareness Week, which begins today, he continued: 'It causes nausea and sometimes vomiting. I tell people that it makes me unpredictable as I may have to cancel appointments at the last minute.
'I lost my previous job as a carer in a nursing home because the vertigo was beginning to make me unsafe. I can't predict when it flares up, but I have learned that there are some common triggers, like sudden head movements, or walking down steps.
'There have been times when I've reacted to a loud noise, which made me turn my head suddenly, triggering my vertigo and causing me to fall and land in the middle of the street, on two occasions with cars coming towards me. If I get an inkling of vertigo, I don't go out until it's passed.'
Philip previously served in the RAF for 22 years, working as a technician at both RAF Lossiemouth and RAF Kinloss. After his diagnosis he decided to move back to Scotland.
Struggling to cope with the sudden changes in his life, he contacted North East Sensory Services (NESS), which provided him with a range of valuable support. The charity supports thousands of blind and deaf people, and those with visual and hearing impairments throughout the North and North-East of Scotland.

Its main objective is to help people with sensory loss to live as independently as possible. Among the practical things that the charity helped with were a flashing doorbell he could see anywhere in his house, as well as a flashing and vibrating smoke alarm.
A social worker at the charity also helped him apply for the Adult Disability Payment, which has given him crucial financial support as he is now unable to work. He also joined one of NESS's lipreading classes, which he described as 'amazing' and 'a real turnaround' as it helped him meet others going through the same thing.
Philip said: 'I know I can phone NESS any time during the day if I'm feeling lonely. The social isolation is the worst, and they helped me so much with that. I've found that telling people about my hearing loss really helps, and explaining that hearing aids don't magically fix your hearing, they are only there to support you.
'It's really important for people to look at you when they are talking, so you can lip read. I find it difficult when people join in a conversation I am having. I can follow one person, but I can't follow two or three people at the same time. If you are having difficulties with your hearing, and are diagnosed with hearing loss, I would always recommend going to NESS.'
Carla Marchbank, statutory services manager at NESS, said: 'Philip's story shows just how devastating sensory loss can be. At NESS, our staff understand people need different things along their journey, and we try to support them in whatever way they need at the best time for them.
'This can be on a practical level, through providing equipment or applying for benefits, or responding with the emotional support that people need as they adapt to their new normal.
'Gaining new skills, such as lipreading, can help people regain control of their situation. Members of groups like the lipreading class also provide each other with peer support, sharing their experiences and expertise with others who are at the start of their journey.'

Sandie Peggie's NHS case is more important than Supreme Court ruling
Her colleague, Dr Beth Upton is a doctor and so must know that they will never experience what Ms Peggie was experiencing at that time. We know too that NHS Fife has spent more than £220,000 defending itself at the tribunal in a case brought by Ms Peggie. This will resume on Wednesday and is expected to last for another 11 days. Read more After Ms Peggie formally complained about being forced to share her changing-room with Dr Upton she was suspended following an incident at the Victoria Hospital in Kirkcaldy where both medics worked. She claims that her treatment at the hands of her employer was unlawful under the Equality Act, citing sexual harassment, belief discrimination and victimisation. There were many absurd moments during the first part of this tribunal earlier this year. Some of them edged towards sinister. Ms Peggie was forced to re-live some details of her intimate history, including being the victim of a sexual assault. There were attempts to portray her as a vindictive bully when there has been an element of class and social status startlingly evident throughout. We know also that, on two occasions, NHS Fife attempted to withhold information on the tribunal. When Scotland's Information Tsar, the hugely respected David Hamilton, called them out on this, NHS Fife described him as 'emotional', 'selective' and 'unprofessional'. We know this because this health board, whose chief executive earns nearly £150k a year, committed a massive data breach by including their diatribe against Mr Hamilton in their response to a mother who had requested a copy of her child's medical records. These revelations, serious though they are in respect of NHS Fife's basic competency, pale when measured against the callousness of Scotland's elite liberal class. Until Michelle Thompson spoke out last week, no Scottish politician has dared to express disquiet about the board's conduct throughout this tribunal. Neil Gray, Scotland's comically inept Health Minister, even expressed his confidence in NHS Fife. This is elite-level trolling of the Scottish public. In an era in which Scotland's Holyrood elites have been exposed as political fraudsters, the RCN's treatment of this nurse has been the most craven and cowardly I can recall of a British trade union. The Scottish Trades Union Congress is currently led by a property magnate who also apparently believes that biological men can live as women, so perhaps this isn't so remarkable. You can take your pick of the most startling exchanges during the first hearing of this tribunal. I found this statement by Dr Upton to be the most worrying. 'Biological sex is a nebulous term and doesn't really mean anything,' Dr Upton said. 'Nobody can actually define biological sex.' I believe that what this really means is: 'Female is a nebulous term and doesn't mean anything'. Coming from a fully-qualified doctor of medicine, this is deeply troubling. Yet, the most iniquitous aspect of these proceedings lies in something else: that they and their employers were most probably emboldened to act like this because the First Minister of this country and his two predecessors believe exactly as they do. They sit at the apex of a vast inter-dependent system of patronage that seeps into every crevice of civic Scotland. This is reinforced by every promotion, every emolument, every cash dividend handed to those groups which twigged early on that advocating for it was the quickest way to taxpayers' money for their organisations. Is this rooted merely in a deep loathing for the little people to which many powerful people succumb? Or do some of them sense that the grift is running out of steam; that the well in which they've drunk for years is about to dry up? And that all that's left is to squeeze as much as possible in the time remaining so that they can land a tidy non-exec somewhere: an academic post at the John Smith Centre perhaps, or a position with Engender or the TIE campaign? The outcome of Sandie Peggie's employment tribunal is, I think, more important than the Supreme Court's clarification of existing law that, for the purposes of the Equality Act, 'sex' means biological sex assigned at birth. In due course, UK civic society will be forced to adopt this, after the performative squealing abates. Read more In Scotland, though, if Sandie Peggie were to lose her job over this then it means that every stratum of civic Scotland: from the government, down through local authorities; the health and education boards; the trade unions; the professional associations will all be complicit. Certainly, you can say that the Supreme Court verdict ultimately gives Sandie Peggie a lifeline should she lose her case. This, though, must be measured against an awful truth that now confronts Scotland: that most of its political class, and its thousands of public servants, believe that 'woman' is a 'nebulous term' that 'doesn't really mean anything'. Scotland's governing class are like cockroaches. No matter how unintelligent, craven, unprincipled and dishonest they are, they will always thrive. They've managed to create refuges whose true nature is hidden from the public and which will always welcome them and sustain them. The grants they award to their pet organisations while in office serve another purpose beyond disseminating the state's propaganda. They're meant to ensure these syndicates will all still be in rude financial health when they come knocking on their door for a tidy, per diem contract after politics. The statistics come amid separate analysis of cancer waiting times showing patients waited a year for treatment to begin and a warning from a senior doctor that 'the Scottish NHS is struggling to provide the care patients need, when they need it'. The figure peaked in 2022, when 581,155 overtime hours were worked. While 2023 was the highest year for overtime spend, costing just shy of £15.7 million. Figures for 2023 and 2024 also assess how many required hours in the ambulance service are filled by staff working overtime. For those years, the proportion was 24 per cent and 23 per cent respectively. 'Relying on overstretched staff to plug gaps in shift will be putting staff as well as patients at serious risk. 'Ambulance crews have been left dangerously understaffed because of years of dire workforce planning by successive SNP health secretaries who are clueless to the scale of the emergency facing them.' A spokesman for the Scottish Ambulance Service said: 'Our staff do a fantastic job helping patients and saving lives across Scotland each and every day. 'As with all ambulance services across the UK, we offer overtime to boost shift cover during periods of increased pressure and high demand, and we continue to monitor spend.' Long cancer waits revealed Separate analysis from the Scottish Lib Dems has revealed the longest waits for first treatment of cancer, with patients waiting up to a year. In the same period, patients in Grampian, the Borders, and Dumfries and Galloway waited 11 months for treatment to begin. Between the quarter ending March 2015 and March 2025, the longest wait in NHS Borders has more than quadrupled, increasing from 76 days to 343 days. Last month, SNP Public Health Minister Jenni Minto admitted that people could be dying as a result of later cancer diagnoses. Scottish Lib Dems leader, Alex Cole-Hamilton, said: 'All across Scotland, the SNP government isn't giving cancer patients the best chance of survival. These statistics show huge increases in waiting times to begin treatment after an urgent referral with suspicion of cancer, stretching up to a year. NHS 'underinvestment' fears Dr Alan Robertson, chair of BMA Scotland's consultant committee, said the 'worrying statistics' reflect 'our continued warnings about how badly the Scottish NHS is struggling to provide the care patients need, when they need it'. He added: 'At the heart of this are years of underinvestment and a consistent failure to plan for the future, which means the NHS in Scotland is struggling to deliver what is required with current resources. We know there are still more than 1,000 WTE consultant vacancies across Scotland, and so this raises questions about how these types of waits will be tackled when there are not enough consultants to keep up with current demand. The median wait for treatment is three days, and the median wait from urgent suspicion of cancer referral to treatment is 52 days, demonstrating the extensive work by staff across Scotland to treat people as quickly and effectively as possible. 'We are treating more patients with cancer on time, within both standards, compared to the same quarter six years ago – 7.7 per cent more within the 31-day standard & 0.1 per cent more within the 62-day standard.' Invest in fighting cancer for us all as Scots wait up to a year for treatment
Scotland's NHS is under immense pressure and is still suffering the after effects of the Covid lockdown. But hardworking hospital staff are being let down by managers and politicians – leaving waiting times at record levels. Today we learn that some Scots are waiting up to a year for their first cancer treatment after being diagnosed – despite a target of 62 days. This is another stark reminder of the crisis in our health service and the need for more investment and better leadership. Scotland has an ageing population, meaning demand for treatment is only going to increase. But the situation is being made even worse by the spirit-crushing backlogs for non-emergency treatments, with one in six Scots waiting for a procedure of some sort. The BMA, which represents doctors, warns a two-tier health system is developing where some can afford to skip queues by paying to go private. Some people will accept, sadly, paying for a hip replacement might be a necessary compromise given the huge backlogs for the operation. But no one – regardless of who they are and where they live – should be forced to consider paying for cancer treatment. Some cancers, of course, require more urgent attention than others. That doesn't excuse patients across several health boards being left waiting 11 months before receiving their first treatment. Staff in overstretched hospitals are already working miracles on a daily basis as they try to bring down waiting times. But our cancer services need urgent investment to ensure all patients can be seen in a timely manner. Hols hangover Thousands of Scots are jetting out for hard-earned summer holidays. And for many of us, it will be tempting to enjoy a beer or two on the flight home. But if you're driving from the airport, stick to non-alcoholic drinks. Police Scotland are mounting patrols at airports to breathalyse people they suspect of drink-driving. The force is rightly concerned over returning holidaymakers taking to the roads while still under the influence. And they believe these patrols, starting at Aberdeen Airport before being rolled out to other areas, will send a strong signal to drink-drivers. The message is simple – if you're driving on your return from holiday, lay off the drink. There is no excuse for drink-driving – and losing your licence is a holiday hangover nobody wants.
