'Was shocked how much less...': Viral post on H-1B salary says it's not just a scam
A post on X went viral as it revealed how H-1B visa program is not just a scam happening with US workers but also an exploration of foreign workers who would do anything to stay in the US.
H1-B visa programs allow US companies to hire skilled employees from foreign countries and it has remained a contentious issue as the US job market is shrinking though companies are not reducing H-1B hiring.
The person in the viral post claimed that he had an H-1B peer from India, who was a nice and competent person who was getting burnt out under the work pressure at the US company where they were working. But the person did not have any other option unless he finds another visa sponsor.

"I used to work for a company where I had an H1B peer. Nice enough guy, pretty competent. He was getting burnt out and lamenting how he couldn't leave unless he found a new visa sponsor. Eventually he confided in me his salary because he was unhappy with a raise he got…" the post read.
"I was making about 40% more than he was. We had the same title/level. I negotiated pretty hard when I had joined but was shocked how much less they got away with paying him.
And he had no options. Unless he found another sponsor, it was back to India," the post added.
"It's not just a scam for cheaper labor, but labor that is desperate to stay in your good graces at a lower wage lest they get sent home. So they'll work longer hours for less money because they don't want to go back. At least illegals are free to job hop under the table," it said.
"Whatever the immigration/guest worker policy is, it has to not let employers get away with paying them less than natives. If it's just a race to the bottom for wages, it's bad for everyone (except the company)," the post concluded.

New solar cell tech developed at IIT-Bombay a gamechanger: Union minister
Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi on Tuesday said that new solar cell technology developed at Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT-B) is a 'gamechanger' and urged industry players to invest in scaling up the project. In a major boost to works happening in solar energy sector at IIT-B, Joshi announced disbursement of fourth instalment of total funding of Rs 200 crore that was assured more than a decade ago to the National Centre for Photovoltaic Research & Education (NCPRE) — the umbrella body for various research projects in renewable energy sector at the institute. In the current phase of funding, which is expected to bring Rs.83 crore, it will be through Public Private Partnership (PPP) model as government is urging industry players to invest in scaling up the project, particularly the high-efficiency 2-terminal tandem solar cell using a perovskite-silicon combination, achieving about 30 per cent power conversion efficiency, which is significantly higher than the current 20 per cent. Talking about this innovation at the IIT Bombay, the Union minister who visited the NCPRE at IIT-B, said, 'It is a game-changer for India's solar energy future. This makes India a global leader in next-gen photovoltaics and by investing in such innovations, we are driving down the cost of solar energy, making it more accessible for all Indians.' Assuring continuous support from MNRE, Joshi emphasised the need of scaling up of this technology for commercial success. 'Private investment is crucial for large-scale technology development and some of the industry representatives present for the meeting today have shown great interest,' said Joshi. Prof Dinesh Kabra head of the team which has successfully engineered a semi-transparent perovskite solar cell (PSC) said that funding in this phase will be for scaling up of this technology at commercial wafer-size. Further it will be catalysing the support for the future pilot line through which commercialisation will be made possible. 'After having formed the 4-terminal (4T) tandem structure, with this renewed funding the team will now work on developing a 2-terminal tandem structure with support from the manufacturing partner,' he said. The Indian Express had reported about the major breakthrough in the Solar Energy Sector at the IIT Bombay. The semi-transparent perovskite solar cell (PSC) which is layered over a traditional silicon-based solar cell, forming a 4-terminal (4T) tandem structure enables a better energy conversion and durability, especially in India's heat-intensive conditions. Apart from boost in efficiency over conventional solar technology, it has potential to reduce the cost of solar power at around Re 1 per kwh compared with Rs 2.5-4 per unit now.

Karnataka floats Rs 17,698-crore global tender for twin-tube tunnel road project in Bengaluru
Despite extensive criticism from several corners, Bengaluru Smart Infrastructure Limited (B-SMILE) has invited international competitive bids for the construction of a three-lane underground twin tunnel road from Hebbal Esteem Mall Junction to Silk Board KSRP Junction, aiming to transform urban mobility along the city's busy north-south corridor. The massive infrastructure initiative, with an estimated cost of Rs 17,698 crore (excluding GST), will be implemented under the modified build-own-operate-transfer (BOOT) model and includes operation and maintenance responsibilities. The project is split into two packages—Hebbal to Seshadri Road and Seshadri Road to Silk Board—with estimated costs of Rs 8,770 crore and Rs 8,928 crore, respectively. The proposed tunnel, spanning nearly 17 km, includes multiple entry and exit ramps and is expected to significantly ease congestion across central Bengaluru and reduce the time travel from 90 minutes to 45 minutes. The total concession period has been set at 34 years, including a 50-month construction timeline for each package. Tender documents will be made available on the Karnataka Public Procurement Portal starting July 15. The pre-bid meeting will be held on August 4, and the deadline for submission of tenders is September 2. B-SMILE has invited participation from contractors registered with agencies such as BBMP, CPWD, KPWD, Railways, MES, and other state or national bodies. The proposed tunnel road, if executed as planned, will be one of the most expensive and ambitious infrastructure undertakings in Bengaluru's history. Touted as a 'pet project' of Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar, the initiative has come under severe criticism from Opposition BJP leaders, civic groups, mobility experts, and environmentalists. The government has floated global tenders even after the BBMP was called out for shoddy work of the detailed project report (DPR) prepared by Rodic Consultants at a cost of Rs 9 crore. The report was criticised for glaring errors including its references of traffic analysis to cities like Nashik and Malegaon in Maharashtra and downplaying environmental impact. The DPR also proposes a toll of Rs 330 (one-way) for a distance of 16.6 km. The report also highlights tolls for subsequent years are calculated on the basis of a 5 per cent annual increase in wholesale price index with a 40 per cent restriction. The base year for the toll revenue is FY 2030-31. Importantly, the toll estimates have been proposed only for cars, with no mention of other vehicles. Shivakumar had earlier said that without a toll, the tunnel road project cannot go ahead. Bangalore South MP Tejasvi Surya came down heavily on Shivakumar on Monday, criticising the proposed tunnel road project as an unscientific and elitist initiative that sidelines the needs of the common man. He also warned of legal action if the government goes ahead with the project, which he said would violate Bengaluru's Comprehensive Mobility Plan and sustainable transportation goals. The BJP MP also flagged the background of the consultants involved. He pointed out that one of the firms behind the feasibility study—part of a joint venture between Lion Consultants and Altinok—has been blacklisted in Madhya Pradesh over a National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) project, he said. Meanwhile, Rodic Consultants, which prepared the DPR, were reportedly linked to a Rs 500-crore scam in Jammu & Kashmir. Surya further alleged that the project was moving ahead without mandatory clearance from the Bengaluru Metropolitan Land Transport Authority, violating section 19 of the BMLTA Act.

Credit scores at risk: US Judge reverses Biden era medical debt rule; millions could be impacted
Representative image A Texas federal judge has reversed a BIden era rule that excluded medical debt from the credit reports, with a potential impact on 15 million Americans. The rule that came into effect this January, did not do away with the debt altogether, rather changed the method how credit scores of individuals would be calculated. It would have removed around $50 billion of medical debt from the credit reports of 15 million people. US district judge Sean Jordan, appointed by President Donald Trump in 2019 during his first term, observed in his ruling that the Fair Credit Reporting Act does not allow the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) to remove medical debt from reports and that it exceeded its authority. The CFPB had introduced new credit reporting rules in January, just before President Joe Biden left office. The independent agency estimated that the changes could generate an additional 22,000 mortgages annually and increase Americans' credit scores by an average of 20 points. Although the judge has blocked the implementation of these changes, he clarified that the CFPB is still allowed to "encourage" lenders to consider other categories of information when assessing creditworthiness. Since taking office for the second time, Trump has moved to eliminate what his department of government efficiency terms "waste, fraud, and abuse" across federal agencies. One of the first to come under scrutiny was the consumer protection agency, which quickly became a target and faced significant layoffs The CFPB had made the changes in January before President Joe Biden left office. The independent agency had calculated that the new credit reporting rules would result in an additional 22,000 mortgages every year and boost Americans' credit scores by an average of 20 points. Although the judge has prevented the advancement of these changes, he noted that the bureau can "encourage" creditors to use other categories of information. Dan Smith, head of the Consumer Data Industry Association, welcomed the decision, calling canceling the reversal of rule a move in the right direction. 'This is the right outcome for protecting the integrity of the system,' Smith wrote in a statement, according to Reuters. The decision comes just a week after Trump signed a massive spending and tax bill that includes sweeping cuts to Medicaid. New work requirements included in the law could strip millions of their coverage.
