‘Don't feel like you have to stop at one': the shiny, thrifty brooch revival

The white gold and diamond brooch set like a moving snake was not the first time Zendaya wore the jewellery category most associated with grandmothers. But due to its placement, it might have been the most talked about. In attendance at the Met gala, the Dune actor pinned the Bulgari brooch to the back of her white Louis Vuitton suit. 'The Met Gala really was prime time for brooches,' Melbourne stylist Stuart Walford says. While fashion critics have heralded the brooch's return to menswear for several seasons, lately it has found its way to women's lapels too. Also at the Met Gala, Sarah Snook pinned a cluster of silver brooches from Rahaminov Diamonds and Saidian Vintage Jewels to her blazer, Aimee Lou Wood and Doja Cat both wore brooches in the shape of flowers covered in tiny diamonds (by Cartier and David Webb respectively), while the event's host, Anna Wintour, complimented her pale blue suit with an antique brooch by Lydia Courteille. At the SNL 50th reunion Tina Fey wore an art deco T-shaped brooch, Cynthia Erivo wore several to the 56th NAACP Image Awards and, more than once, the fashion writer Leandra Medine Cohen has featured a 1930s Jean Cocteau fish pin on her Substack, The Cereal Aisle. The brooch also remained the accessory of choice for men at the Oscars with Kieran Culkin, Adrien Brody and Colman Domingo prettifying their suits with ones shaped like tear drops, feathers and ribbons – in that order. Perhaps unsurprisingly given their prominence on the red carpet, it's hard to find a major fashion house that doesn't have a brooch in its recent collections, from Gucci to Loewe and Schiaparelli. In Australia, designers Carla Zampatti, Edward Cuming and Mimco are also selling brooches. Sign up for the fun stuff with our rundown of must-reads, pop culture and tips for the weekend, every Saturday morning For Sydney jeweller Lucas Blacker, a brooch is 'almost like a tattoo'. 'It is a sign from the wearer to show their personality,' Blacker says. At his studio, Black Cicada, he is seeing more clients wanting to repurpose inherited jewellery or pieces they aren't wearing by turning them into brooches. Olivia Cummings, the jewellery designer behind Cleopatra's Bling, says: 'Brooches require care in their placement and a sense of ceremony in their wearing. I think people are craving that now.' The personal statement brooch has deep roots, evolving from simple pins used to hold garments closed in the bronze age to intricate adornments that communicated class, religion and marital status in ancient Rome. In the 18th and 19th centuries, brooches became the original Instagram-holiday-post, featuring micro mosaics of the European tourist towns they were bought in. More recently, the brooches of Madeleine Albright and Queen Elizabeth II were rumoured to carry coded messages. 'Brooches are conversation starters, that's what makes them so special,' Walford says. Sign up to Saved for Later Catch up on the fun stuff with Guardian Australia's culture and lifestyle rundown of pop culture, trends and tips after newsletter promotion In some ways the brooch's rising popularity is consistent with the lipstick indicator, which suggests when economic times are tough people cut back on big purchases and turn to small, affordable luxuries – such as lipstick or, according to Walford, brooches. The financial appeal is twofold: they are a great item to thrift and they help the wearer freshen up their existing wardrobe without buying an entirely new outfit, he says. When styling brooches, Walford recommends balancing the proportions with the size of your lapel. 'If it's narrow, keep things small and delicate. For a large and oversized 80s-style lapel, you could go big.' 'Don't feel like you have to stop at one – if we learned anything from this year's Met Gala, it's that a brooch can be layered and stacked.' Alternatively, take a leaf out of Zendaya's book and fasten one to the back of a coat or dress – just watch out for your handbag strap if you do it. 'There are no rules,' Cummings says. 'I also love to wear them over the top button of a shirt or pinned to a straw hat in summer.' A brooch is a great way to break up an all-black outfit, to fasten a scarf thrown over the shoulders or to add some sparkle to a basket or handbag. If you're looking to start, or add to, a brooch collection, try searching for vintage brooches on secondhand sites such as Vestiaire Collective or online marketplaces such as Etsy, eBay and 1stDibs – the results page feels like rifling through a wealthy, bohemian grandmother's jewellery box. Antique stores and vintage markets also often have extensive brooch collections, if you prefer to peruse in real life. From gold nose-and-mouth sculptures by Salvador Dalí to 1980s Lanvin flowers and enamel and rhinestone sea shells – each pin contains the possibility of another, fancier world. At their best, brooches should feel like small sculptures – striking from afar but still full of detail when you come closer, Cummings says. 'Weight and balance are important but above all it should carry a sense of story.'

In clips shared on the social media site today, Katie could be seen sitting in a make-up chair having some glam touch-ups ahead of a photoshoot. However, her neck looked incredibly strained as she spoke to the make-up artist. Obvious lines could be seen forming on Katie's neck following her weight loss. The clips are likely to add to the concern for the star's frame which has been continuing to grow in recent months. Earlier this week, fans' eyebrows were raised over her thin legs in an Instagram post which had them racing to the comment section. One said: "You look beautiful but your legs are so tiny." While another added: "Omg your legs babe you need to put on weight." Katie recently hit back at fans who have said she is "too skinny" by filming herself being filmed. The mum-of-five, believed to be 5ft 4in tall, showed her weight as 7st 12lb. Katie Price continues to spark concern as she shows off her very slim legs in new video Attempting to put fears to rest, Katie said in the recent video : "Everyone is so obsessed with my weight. This is what I weigh. That. That is what I weigh." However, with the combined weight of her 2120cc breast implants removed - which are thought to weigh around 4.87lb each - her implant-free body is closer to 7st 2lb. That puts her BMI at 17.2 which is below the healthy range and in the underweight category (18.5 and under). It also sees Katie dangerously close to being classed as moderately underweight, a sub-category defined by the World Health Organization as a BMI below 17. The podcaster previously tried to shut down fears over her weight loss, saying she decided to slim down after a long-standing foot injury and attempts at IVF made her put on weight. Speaking on her Snapchat in May, Katie said: "Yes I've lost weight. Katie Price's Surgery: A Timeline 1998 - Katie underwent her first breast augmentation taking her from a natural B cup to a C cup. She also had her first liposuction 1999 - Katie had two more boob jobs in the same year, one taking her from a C cup to a D cup, and then up to an F cup 2006 - Katie went under the knife to take her breasts up to a G cup 2007 - Katie had a rhinoplasty and veneers on her teeth 2008 - Katie stunned fans by reducing her breasts from an F cup to a C cup 2011 - Going back to an F cup, Katie also underwent body-contouring treatment and cheek and lip fillers 2014/5 - Following a nasty infection, Katie had her breast implants removed 2016 - Opting for bigger breasts yet again, Katie had another set of implants, along with implants, Botox and lip fillers 2017 - After a disastrous 'threading' facelift, Katie also had her veneers replaced. She performed at Dublin Pride just days later and surgeons warned the lack of recovery posed a risk of infection "Yes that what I've wanted to do, I've wanted to lose weight. "Because the past three, four years ago when I broke my feet and I was in a wheelchair for 10 months because they said I'd never walk again, and obviously you put weight on being in a wheelchair. "And then I did all the IVF stuff, that also puts on weight. "So yeah I did put on weight and I hated it, I felt uncomfortable and it wasn't me." 4 The star has lost plenty of weight in recent months Credit: Getty

Rollers Forever focuses the story of two lifelong Bay City Rollers fans who reconnect on a Saturday night and relive their teenage obsession with the Rollers. It opens at Glasgow's Pavilion Theatre from on August 19 and runs until August 30. It stars Chiara Sparkes and Dani Heron as friends Susan and Jenny, and Chiara said that there is excitement in the air ahead of the show commencing its run. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad She said: 'It's exciting to have a show that people are so excited about coming to see. And it's sold so well already, that's quite rare. Going into a show already knowing there are so many fans and people that want it to be good, I think that's exciting.' Dani added: 'My mum absolutely loves them, and my aunties too. You don't realise how many songs they have. You know Shang-a-lang but then you look into it and you go 'I know that song, and that song.' 'I said to my mum and before I had accepted it she had bought tickets!' Alongside Chiara and Dani, Liam Harkins plays Susan's brother Alec, bringing his compelling stage presence following his performance as Celtic legend Tommy Burns. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Rollermania will take over the Pavilion this August | Wattie Cheung Chiara and Dani play best friends connected by their love of the Rollers as it took over the world, something that writer Danny McCahon was keen to bring into focus on the stage. He explained: Well, there's only been two manias really in Britain, Beatlemania and Rollermania. I remember the 70s, not as if it was 50 years ago, but as if it was maybe a decade ago. And I remembered so many people in my life being massive Bay City Roller fans. In fact, my wife is a massive Bay City Rollers fan. 'One of the things she brought into our marriage was three Bay City Rollers albums. So I knew about them, but when I started examining what made a Rollers fan so close to the band, I started realising we were all the same. No matter what band you were into in the 70s, the band that you followed is how you found your people.' Danny said the play will shine a spotlight on those relationships formed through bands. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad He continued: 'Whatever band you're associating yourself with is how you find your people. And this play has turned out to be a sort of spotlight on how that friendship is enduring. Friendship and love can endure when it's kicked off with a shared interest like that.' John McLaughlin had been a lifelong Rollers fan, before becoming a member of the band when they reunited in 2015. Now he is a producer of Rollers Forever. He explained: 'It's incredible. I've seen it first hand. I've been a Bay City Rollers fan since I was a wee boy aged seven or eight. They were the first real band I had seen on the telly, and I saw the colour, the screaming girls on Top of the Pops, and then I saw an interview with them. They talked like me. 'So it really made a huge impression on me. I thought, 'Oh, this looks amazing. And they talk like me. This is amazing'. And then years later, full circle, I was lucky enough to put the reunion together with Les, Alan and Woody, and we took it all the way to the Hydro.' Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad And still flying the flag for the Rollers is Stuart 'Woody' Wood. The sole remaining member of the band from their 1970s heyday said that the musical is a chance for the Rollers fans to shine. He said: 'Back in 2015 and there were all these plans to do all this stuff, a movie and musical and reunion and it was great. The shows were sell outs. It was brilliant fun. John always wanted to do this musical, and we all stayed pals through the whole thing. We've written songs together, the title for the musical Rollers Forever is a song that we've written for it.' Bay City Rollers fans were known for their passion 'It's about the fans. It's not the story of the Bay City Rollers. It's just Bay City Rollers Music and the fans are telling their story.' The legacy of the Rollers has endured for more than five decades, Woody said that he feels lucky that their songs have stood the test of time. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad He said: 'Those songs are still getting played someplace, whether it's their parents or their grandparents, the older radio stations, we had that top 20 last year, and just certain songs that just seem to stand the test of time. And we are lucky enough that a bunch of our songs are still doing that.' Tickets range from £25 - £39.50 and are available now here.
