Wembanyama was the league's rookie of the year two years ago, and Spurs guard Stephon Castle won that same trophy this past season. Wembanyama was the front-runner to be defensive player of the year last season when he was diagnosed with the blood clot in his right shoulder in February.

He was averaging 24.3 points, 11 rebounds, 3.8 blocks and 3.7 assists when he was shut down; the only other player in NBA history to finish a season averaging all that was Kareem Abdul-Jabbar in 1975-76.

Wembanyama has traveled extensively in recent months and spent time last month at a Shaolin temple in Zhengzhou, China. The temple is a place that welcomes visitors who wish to study Chan meditation, Shaolin Kung Fu, traditional Chinese medicine and more.

All Blacks make 10 changes to the starting lineup for the third rugby test against France

WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) — All Blacks head coach Scott Robertson has made 10 changes to his starting lineup for Saturday's third rugby test against France, naming hooker Brodie McAlister to make his debut from the bench. Robertson pledged to use every member of his squad in the three-test series and he kept that promise Thursday after making only minor changes between the first and second tests. New Zealand holds an unassailable 2-0 lead in the series and has regained the Dave Gallagher Trophy. Damian McKenzie will start at flyhalf for the first time in the series, taking over from Beauden Barrett who started in the first two tests. He will combine in the halves for the first time this season with Cortez Ratima. Robertson has selected a new midfield partnership with Quinn Tupaea returning to the starting lineup after a long injury break, combining with veteran Anton Lienert-Brown. Ruben Love will start for the first time at fullback, while Sevu Reece returns on the right wing after missing the second test with a head injury. Captain Ardie Savea is the only player to remain in an overhauled backrow. Samipeni Finau comes in on the blindside flank and Luke Jacobson will start at No. 8. Openside flanker Savea retains the captaincy in the absence of Scott Barrett who is one of several players unavailable through injury. Tupou Vaa'i, who made a successful transition from lock to flanker in the first two tests is, sidelined with a head knock. Fabian Holland and Patrick Tuipulotu have been named in an unchanged second row while hooker Samisoni Taukei'aho and prop Tyrel Lomax will start for the first time in the series. Prop George Bower, backrower Dalton Papali'i and scrumhalf Noah Hotham come in on the bench. Seven players in the squad have been selected in the match 23 for the first time this season, and McAlister will become the sixth player to debut for the All Blacks this year. 'There is high motivation and focus to perform in Hamilton this week,' Robertson said. 'We are prepared for a determined and spirited French side and excited to play in front of a passionate sold-out crowd. 'We are thrilled to welcome Tyrel, Luke, Anton and Sevu back from injury and, with 185 caps between them, we know that they will be ready to perform at the highest level. It is also exciting to have Brodie debuting, as well as Ruben, Noah and Timoci adding to their single All Blacks cap.' ___ New Zealand: Ruben Love, Sevu Reece, Anton Lienert-Brown, Quinn Tupaea, Rieko Ioane, Damian McKenzie, Cortez Ratima; Luke Jacobson, Ardie Savea (captain), Samipeni Finau, Fabian Holland, Patrick Tuipulotu, Tyrel Lomax, Samisoni Taukei'aho, Ethan de Groot. Two sizzling squads meet when LAFC visit Minnesota United

(Photo credit: Gary A. Vasquez-Imagn Images) Off back-to-back home shutout wins over the Colorado Rapids and FC Dallas, Los Angeles FC will try for their first-ever road victory over Minnesota United on Wednesday night in Saint Paul, Minn. LAFC (9-5-5, 32 points), who blanked the Loons 1-0 in the season opener for both teams on Feb. 22 in Los Angeles, are 0-2-4 all-time in road matches with Minnesota, including a 2-0 loss last season. LAFC are sixth in the Western Conference but still have three games in hand after going 0-2-1, including a 2-0 loss to eventual champion Chelsea, in the FIFA Club World Cup. After a 1-0 home loss to Vancouver, Los Angeles bounced back with a 3-0 win over the Rapids and a 2-0 victory last Saturday over Dallas. Former Tottenham star and French international Hugo Lloris needed to make just one save against Dallas for his eighth clean sheet of the season and 20th in two seasons with LAFC. Denis Bouanga had a goal and an assist to increase his MLS totals to 10 goals and seven assists in 18 matches. 'There is rhythm, that is great to see,' LAFC coach Steve Cherundolo said. 'There is confidence. That is good to see. ... We have done this for two (matches) in a row, and we hope to continue that against Minnesota.' Los Angeles will have to do it without one of its best defenders, however. The team announced Tuesday that Aaron Long, carted off in the 76th minute against Dallas, underwent surgery for a ruptured left Achilles tendon and will miss the rest of the season. Minnesota (11-4-7, 40 points) is second in the Western Conference, two points behind San Diego FC, and is a perfect 3-0-0 in July, including a U.S. Open Cup win over the Chicago Fire, outscoring its opponents 9-3 in the process. The Loons come in off an impressive 4-1 home win over San Jose on Saturday. Tani Oluwaseyi had a goal and two assists and Robin Lod picked up his 34th career assist, eclipsing Emanuel Reynoso's regular-season club record of 33. Oluwaseyi, a member of the Canadian national team, has nine goals and eight assists this season. 'I think in general it was a high-level performance, and I think the score line reflected that and the chances we had reflected that,' Minnesota coach Eric Ramsay said. 'I think this team has a lot of energy and a lot of momentum at the moment.'

Atletico Madrid reaches deal to sign Argentina international Thiago Almada

MADRID (AP) — Atletico Madrid has reached an agreement to sign Argentina international Thiago Almada from Brazilian club Botafogo. Atletico said Tuesday the 24-year-old attacking midfielder, who was playing on loan with French club Lyon, will sign his contract with the Spanish club after passing a medical. Atletico did not disclose the transfer fee or give details on the length of the contract. Spanish media said the transfer was worth about 25 million euros ($29 million), with Botafogo receiving a percentage of a possible future transfer to another club. Almada arrives after forward Ángel Correa left Atletico to sign with Mexican club Tigres. He'll join an attack that includes countryman Julián Álvarez, Antoine Griezmann and Alexander Sorloth. Atletico had already boosted its squad by signing midfielder Álex Baena from Villarreal and 22-year-old Italian left back Matteo Ruggeri from Atalanta. Diego Simeone's team finished third in the Spanish league last season, behind Real Madrid and champion Barcelona. It was eliminated in the group stage of the Club World Cup.
